Investigating and Refining Roles: Health Educators' Preparation and Competency for Delivering Nutrition Education

Ettienne-Gittens, Reynolette 2011 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents four studies designed to investigate and provide evidence based insight into the preparation of health educators in the science and practice of nutrition. A mixed methods approach was utilized for this research. First, a review of the current literature will be presented discussing (a) what other authors have written regarding nutrition education for allied health professionals, and (b) the availability of research advocating for nutrition education for health educators. Also included is the review of twenty-three (23) articles addressing how researchers conceptualize nutrition, and their rationale for nutrition's inclusion into the respective allied health discipline's curriculum. Secondly, an analysis of the health education curriculum of a professional health program is presented. With the use of an availability scale, the university's most recent catalogue as well as the curriculum of the health degree was analyzed. The health program was also assessed for the presence of nutrition credentialed faculty and the presence of nutrition requirements and electives. Thirdly, the development and administration of an instrument to test the nutrition, nutrition education and health education knowledge of a sample of health and nutrition students will be discussed. The self-administered instrument was developed by the author. The final sample (n=123) comprised a purposeful set of students all currently enrolled at Texas A & M University, College Station, TX. The student's final scores on the instrument were assessed based on major, classification and by whether they had pursued a nutrition course during their undergraduate tenure. Lastly, a qualitative examination of health educators with the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) credential will be presented. Employing a naturalistic approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted. The final sample comprised four (4) persons. Health educators provided narratives related to their prior experiences in nutrition and their perceived competency in delivering nutrition education. Prior to this study, scientific literature has been deafeningly silent on nutrition and the health educator, the ability of health educators to deliver nutrition education, as well as the advocacy of nutrition for the profession. Thus, this study represents the first step towards addressing the limitations associated with the role of nutrition educator and filling the theoretical gaps.

Rethinking the Role of Clergy as Consumer Health Educators

Wallace, Rick L., Behringer, Bruce, Ghansah, Grace, Cook, Nakia J. 17 May 2011 (has links)
Objective: Many people in the Appalachian region turn to their churches in times of crisis. A diagnosis of cancer is seen as a personal and family crisis. The purpose of this study is to partner with a regional comprehensive cancer control coalition and an interdenominational group of religious professionals to identify, develop, and test contents for a set of classes to better prepare and educate religious leaders who regularly are required to assist their church members with a diagnosis of cancer. Methods: This project will be done in four steps.1. identify elements of a cancer curriculum for preachers2. develop learning modules and install lessons on computer tablets3. pilot use of tablets with two clusters of two community preachers4. evaluate changes in knowledge and sense of communication with medical professionalsData will be analyzed using focus groups both before and after the use of the tablets with the community preachers. Results: Two cohorts of eight pastors were selected from two remote rural regions. Four modules were located on iPad devices that covered various aspects of consumer health information including MedlinePlus, communication issues, and development of health information outreach as a component of ministry. Data collection and analysis is ongoing. Conclusions: Using clergy and other nontraditional delivery venues for consumer health information is well worth pursuing.

Profile of Health Educators in Virginia Institutions of Higher Education: The Value Attached to Work-related Competencies

Kunkel, Danylle Ranae 15 November 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to create a profile of the value of work-related competencies according to health educators in institutions of higher education in the state of Virginia. The health educators were surveyed regarding competencies perceived to be of high importance in their current position. Additionally, the study examined whether these competencies are addressed on the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam created by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC). Data collected did support current literature in regards to importance of competencies. Regardless of job title or CHES certification status, health educators rank oral communication skills and interpersonal skills as being in the top five 'soft skills' related to career success. Oral communication and interpersonal skills are among the competencies addressed by the CHES exam. Interestingly, however, 76% (n=29) of respondents reported that they were not CHES certified. This study also examined the relationship between a respondent's job title (health-related, medically-related, or other) and his or her willingness to assist with health education curriculum development and student evaluation. Respondents whose job title directly related to health education were much more likely to be willing to help with curriculum development and student evaluation than those that had the responsibility of disseminating health education but held another type of title. There is a need for further investigation into the basis for perceptions of dissatisfaction with college graduates by employers in regards to level of preparedness for the workforce. / Ph. D.

Hydén, Tommy January 2014 (has links)

In this study collectively we reflected about the practice of health professionals in the course of training in health service. This theme comes from the questioning conducted by the author in the course of her educational career, assistential and currently as managing the training of future health professionals. In order to analyzing the institutionalization of mentoring in health in a general hospital unit in the Municipality of Duque de Caxias we conducted a qualitative study with institutional socioclinical approach, under the analysis mode of professional practices. The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee on 6th July 2014, by the opinion 679.754. Data collection was conducted from September 2014 to March 2015, through semi-structured individual interviews and a workshop with tutors. A daily research was built throughout the study and served as the basis for analysis of the implications of the researcher with her subject of study. The subjects of the survey involved are health professionals who acted as tutors of academic fellows in the unit. From the initial reading of the data emerged themes that were analyzed in light of the concepts of French institutional analysis Lourau-lapassedean, especially the instituted, instituting, institutionalization, implication and analyzer. The research identified the analyzers: invitation to preceptors in the share of research and time as a determinant factor in the preceptorship. Since we take the result of the research, we developed a methodology for building guidelines to support the collective discussion of health professionals that acting as preceptors, to designing together a preceptorship study plan to the hospital. We concluded that the collective reflection of the institution preceptorship in a hospital unit can motivate personal and professional transformation of those involved in vocational training in health and, consequently, improving quality of care to our population.

Building Capacity in the Zambian Mental Health Workforce through Engaging College Educators: Evaluation of a Development Partnership in Higher Education (DelPHe) project

Penson, W.J., Karban, Kate, Patrick, S., Walker, B., Ng'andu, R., Bowa, A.C., Mbewe, E. January 2016 (has links)
yes / Between 2008 and 2011 academic teaching staff from Leeds Beckett University (UK) and Chainama Hills College of Health Sciences (Zambia) worked together on a Development Partnership in Higher Education (DelPHe) project funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) via the British Council. The partnership focused on “up-scaling” the provision of mental health education which was intended to build capacity through the delivery of a range of workshops for health educators at Chainama College, Lusaka. The project was evaluated on completion using small focus group discussions (FGDs), so educators could feedback on their experience of the workshops and discuss the impact of learning into their teaching practice. This chapter discusses the challenges of scaling up the mental health workforce in Zambia; the rationale for the content and delivery style of workshops with the health educators and finally presents and critically discusses the evaluation findings. / Department for International Development (DFID) via the British Council
