Fabrications and characterization of the CO sensor by screen printing SnO2 and ZnO nano particles

Fu, chung-ho 28 November 2012 (has links)
Due to the increased awareness of living and industrial safety, carbon monoxide detectors must be geared towards better portability and sensitivity. Metal oxide semiconductor sensors should possess advantages such as heat and corrosion resistance, low cost materials, and ease of miniaturization. This thesis applied ball milled and powdered ZnO and SnO2 to manufacture into paste, then used the screen printing method deposited ZnO and SnO2 paste film and silver electrode on glass substrate. The influence on sensing film materials, temperature, time of heat treatment, and temperature of measurement was investigated. The samples were fabricated and measured by setting up self-measurement apparatus. The data was analyzed the changes of resistance under different air and carbon monoxide environments. This is followed by analysis of both surface topography and microstructure of the sensing film under OM and SEM. Experiment reveals that samples under different annealing process yield different surface morphology and micro structure while at the beginning of the heat treatment, epoxy evaporates from the sample brought about porous structure. Annealing at higher temperature sample will have more rough surface and better sensitivity in detecting carbon monoxide. After epoxy removed, heat treatment mechanism is then switched to sinter ZnO and SnO2 powders. the longer the samples are sintered, the lower the sensitive. Sensing films composited with ZnO and SnO2 will have better carbon monoxide sensitivity at 300oC but its sensitivity decays at a faster rate than samples working at 250 oC despite the slightly weaker sensitivity. Sensing films with pure ZnO will have higher sensitivity compared to pure SnO2 one. With the increase of SnO2 proportion, carbon monoxide sensitivities of detectors decreases, however, its life time can be improve significantly.

Effect of Aging Heat Treatments on Ni52Ti48 Shape Memory Alloy

Akin, Erhan 2010 August 1900 (has links)
Ni-rich NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) are capable of attaining a wide range of transformation temperatures depending on the heat treatment conditions and superior thermo-mechanical cycling stability, which are desired for repeated solid-state actuation. High Ni-content Ni-rich SMAs have very low transformation temperatures in a solutionized condition due to the high Ni-content of the matrix. Slow cooling (furnacecooling) from solutionizing temperature and additional aging heat treatments result in the formation of Ni-rich precipitates such as Ni4Ti3, Ni3Ti2 and Ni3Ti and increase transformation temperatures above ambient by depleting excess Ni from the matrix. However, the precipitates do not undergo a martensitic phase transformation and they decrease the transformation strain by reducing the volume fraction of the material capable of transforming. Meanwhile, recent preliminary work shows that Ni3Ti precipitates dominate fatigue failure. The objectives of the present study are: (1) to eliminate Ni3Ti but still have Ni4Ti3 precipitates, which are responsible for the dimensional stability and increase transformation temperatures, (2) to investigate the effect of heat treatments on the transformation strain, and (3) to select single variant Ni4Ti3 precipitates through constrained aging for the formation of oriented internal stress and eventually obtain twoway shame memory effect (TWSME) and enhanced dimensional stability. Based on these objectives, the effect of aging heat treatment on transformation temperatures, microstructural evolution, and shape memory behavior were investigated for a Ni52Ti48 shape memory alloy (SMA) by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermo-mechanical testing, including isobaric heating-cooling experiments under various stress levels. It was observed that solutionizing at 900 degree C for 24 hours eliminated Ni3Ti type precipitates, but additional aging heat treatments are needed to form Ni4Ti3 precipitates to increase transformation temperatures. Furnace-cooling and additional aging heat treatment results in the multi-stage martensitic transformation due to chemical and stress inhomogeneities in the microstructure. Aging of the controlled furnace-cooled material at 400 degree C for 48 hours resulted in the highest transformation temperatures among all processing conditions investigated due to the combination of Ni3Ti precipitates and 27 percent volume fraction of the Ni4Ti3 precipitates, which led to the depletion of Ni from the transforming matrix. However, since overaging results in losing coherency of the precipitates, dimensional stability during isobaric thermal cycling was negatively impacted.

The Effects of Heat Treatments on Zinc Nitride Thin Films and the PN Junction Characterization

Li, Cheng-Hua 07 September 2009 (has links)
There are many intensive researches for zinc compounds due to their wide band gaps and potential applications in visible and UV optoelectronic technologies. Zinc nitride is a n-type semiconductor material having a direct band gap, and is not widely studied. Previous papers reported that zinc nitride is a n-type semiconductor having low resistivity and high electron mobility. Its band gap varies from 1.23 eV to 3.2 eV depending on the process condition. In this work, we successfully fabricated zinc nitride p-n junction by heat treatment on zinc nitride films. The threshold voltage of p-n junction is about 1 V. The Zinc nitride films were prepared by reactive RF magnetron sputtering. The as-grown zinc nitride thin film is a n-type material. It is found that the film treated at 300¢J for 3 hours can be changed to a p-type material. The zinc nitride has a very low resistance (2.2¡Ñ10-2 £[-cm) and high carrier concentration (3.88¡Ñ1019 cm-3) after the heat treatment. The optical band gap of zinc nitride was determined as a direct band gap varying from 1.1 eV to 1.6 eV according to the temperature of heat treatment. The zinc nitride was successfully prepared with various electrical characteristics and band gaps by controlling the temperature of heat treatment.

A model for predicting the yield stress of AA6111 after multi-step heat treatments

Poole, Warren J., Raeisinia, B., Wang, X., Lloyd, D.J. January 2006 (has links)
A model has been developed to predict the yield stress of the aluminum alloy AA6111 after multi-step heat treatments which involve combinations of ambient temperature ageing and high temperature artificial ageing. The model framework follows the internal state variable framework where the two principal state variables are i) the volume fraction of clusters which form at ambient temperature and ii) the volume fraction of metastable phases which form during high temperature ageing. The evolution of the these state variables has modeled using a set of coupled differential equations. The mechanical response (the yield stress) is then formulated in terms of the state variables through an appropriate flow stress addition law. To test the model predictions a series of experiments were conducted which examined two scenarios for multi-step heat treatments. In general, good agreement was observed between the model predictions and the experimental results. However, for the case where a short thermal excursion at 250oC was applied immediately after the solution treatment, the results were not satisfactory. This can be understood in terms of the importance of the temperature dependence for the nucleation density of metastable precipitates.
