development and testing environments, we are seeking to merge the cutting edge
technologies of tiny, high-performance disk drives and field programmable gate arrays
(FPGAs) to build a high-speed compact disk recorder (CHSDR). Specifically, we
designed, built, and tested a multi-drive controller that handles the interleaving of data
to eight inexpensive IDE drives. These drives and controller comprise a "cell" capable
of transferring data at 2.45 MB/sec (4 to 5 times the rate of a single drive).
Furthermore, these "cells" can be run in parallel (with a single controller interleaving
data between the cells). This "tree" effect multiplies the data rate by the number of
cells employed. For example, 8 cells (of 8 drives each) can reach nearly 20
MB/second (sustained) and can be built for less than $30,000. The drives we used are
the size of match boxes (the Hewlett Packard KittyHawk). These tiny drives hold 42
megabytes each and can withstand 150 Gs while operating. The cell controller is a
Xilinx 4005 FPGA. Furthermore, we've designed a 120 MB/sec RAM FIFO to buffer
data entering the system (to account for unavoidable drive seek latencies).
In short, the compact high-speed disk array is a small, relatively low cost recording
solution for anyone requiring high data speed but modest data volume. Missile shots,
nuclear tests, and other short-term experiments are good examples of such
requirements.

Synthesis, structure and properties of high pressure and ambient pressure ternary vanadium oxidesMarkkula, Mikael January 2013 (has links)
Transition metal oxides have been extensively studied during past decades. The purpose of this research was to synthesize new or little characterised transition metal oxides using high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) techniques. Various ternary vanadium oxides have been synthesised at ambient and high pressure conditions. All compounds have been studied by neutron and laboratory X-ray powder diffraction and magnetisation measurements. In some cases resistivity and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements were also carried out. The MnVO3 perovskite containing localized 3d5 Mn2+ and itinerant 3d1 V4+ states has been synthesised at 8 GPa and 1100°C. MnVO3 crystallises in Pnma space group (a = 5.2741(6) Å, b = 7.4100(11) Å, and c = 5.1184(8) Å at 300 K) and is metallic at temperatures of 2 – 300 K and at pressures of up to 67 kbar. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction study on the combined sample of several high pressure products showed slight variation in the stoichiometry of MnVO3. Incommensurate Mn spin order was discovered in the neutron powder diffraction measurements, which reveal a (0.29 0 0) magnetic vector below the 46 K spin ordering transition, and both helical and spin density wave orderings are consistent with the diffraction intensities. Electronic structure calculations show large exchange splittings of the Mn and V 3d bands, and (kx 0 0) crossings of the Fermi energy by spin up and down V 3d bands may give rise to Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida coupling of Mn moments, in addition to their superexchange interactions. The new compound CoVO4 has been discovered in a high pressure synthesis experiment. Magnetic susceptibility measurement, synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction studies were carried out. Refinements of the synchrotron X-ray and neutron data show CoVO4 to crystallise in space group Pbcn (a = 4.5012(2) Å, b = 5.5539(3) Å, and c = 4.8330(2) Å at 300 K (synchrotron X-ray data)). The magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals that Co3+ is most likely in a low spin state in CoVO4. Monoclinic brannerite type CoV2O6 was synthesised in ambient pressure. Neutron powder diffraction measurements were carried out and an antiferromagnetic order with an a x b x 2c supercell was observed below TN = 15 K. High spin Co2+ moments of magnitude 4.77(4) μB at 4 K lie in the ac plane and are ferromagnetically coupled within chains of edge-sharing CoO6 octahedra parallel to b axis. No structural transition is observed down to 4 K, but a magnetostriction accompanying antiferromagnetic order at TN = 15 K was discovered. A field-induced 1/3 magnetisation plateau and corresponding changes in the magnetic structure were studied by carrying out neutron powder diffraction measurements at 2 K in applied magnetic fields of 0, 2.5 and 5.0 T. Three collinear magnetic phases were observed as field increases; the above antiferromagnetic state with propagation vector (0 0 ½), a ferrimagnetic (¯⅓ 1 ⅓) phase, and a (0 0 0) ferromagnetic order. Co2+ moments of 4.4 - 5.0 μB have a large orbital component and are aligned close to the c-axis direction in all cases. Spin-lattice coupling leads to a magnetostriction and volume expansion as field increases. The ferrimagnetic phase accounts for the previously reported 1/3 magnetisation plateau, and demonstrates that monoclinic CoV2O6 behaves as an accidental triangular antiferromagnetic lattice in which further frustrated orders may be accessible. Orthorhombic columbite-type NiV2O6 and CoV2O6 compounds were synthesised at 6 GPa and 900°C. Metamagnetism and magnetic transitions were found in magnetic measurements. Powder neutron diffraction studies in zero and applied field were carried out. Both compounds were refined in space group Pbcn and the following lattice parameters were obtained at 300 K, CoV2O6: a = 13.4941(20) Å, b = 5.5736(9) Å, and c = 4.8082(8) Å and NiV2O6: a = 13.3725(17) Å, b = 5.5344(7) Å, and c = 4.8162(7) Å. Neutron powder diffraction studies in zero field did not reveal any magnetic peaks for either of the compounds but magnetic order emerges in applied fields between 1 and 4 T.

Ground borne vibrations from high speed trainsConnolly, David January 2013 (has links)
A consequence of high speed rail transportation is the generation of elevated ground borne vibrations. This thesis presents several original contributions towards the prediction of these vibrations. Firstly, a new three dimensional finite element model capable of vibration prediction was developed. Its main feature was its ability to model complex track geometries while doing so through a fully coupled vehicle-tracksoil system. Model output was compared to experimental results obtained during this thesis and also to independent data sets. It was shown to predict velocity time histories, vibration frequency spectrums and international vibration descriptors with high accuracy. An appraisal of the suitability of a finite difference time domain modelling approach for railway vibration prediction was also undertaken. This resulted in the development of a new ‘higher order’ perfectly matched layers absorbing boundary condition. This condition was found to offer higher performance in comparison to current alternative absorbing boundary conditions. Field work was then undertaken on high speed lines with varying embankment conditions in Belgium and England. Vibration data was recorded up to 100m from each track and geophysical investigations were performed to determine the underlying soil properties. The results were used for numerical model validation and also to provide new insights into the effect of various embankment conditions on vibration propagation. It was found that embankments generate higher frequency excitation in comparison to nonembankment cases and that cuttings generate higher vibration levels than noncuttings. Once validated the finite element model was used to provide new insights into the effect of train speed, embankment constituent materials and railway track type on vibration levels. It was found that the shape and magnitude of ground vibration increased rapidly as the train’s speed approached the Rayleigh wave speed of the underlying soil. It was also found that ballast, slab and metal tracks produced similar levels of vibration and that stiffer embankments reduced vibration levels at distances near and far from the track. Two vibration mitigation techniques were also explored through numerical simulation. Firstly, an analysis was undertaken to determine the ability of a new modified ballast material to actively isolate vibration within the track structure. Secondly, wave barrier geometries were investigated to optimise their performance whilst minimising cost. It was found that barrier depth was the most influential parameter, whereas width had little effect. Additionally, geometry optimisation was found to result in a 95% cost saving in comparison to a base case. Using a vast array of results generated using the previously developed finite element model, a new empirical prediction model was also developed, capable of quickly assessing vibration levels across large sections of track. Unlike currently available empirical models, it was able to account for soil properties in its calculation and could predict a variety of international vibration metrics. It was shown to offer increased prediction performance in comparison to an alternative empirical model.

The secondary teaching profession in Brazil is compared with the secondary teaching profession in the United States. The role of the secondary teaching profession is influenced by cultural values and beliefs, as well as by social and economic conditions. Similarities and differences in the role and preparation of secondary teachers in Brazil and the United States are identified and related to the historical and cultural contexts in which they have developed. The role of the secondary teaching professions in these two cultures is examined through the analysis of two types of data. Historical trends and cultural processes which have influenced the development of the secondary teaching professions are identified through a comparison of information obtained from the education literature. A second body of data consisted of information about professional status and job satisfaction collected through questionnaires distributed to secondary teachers in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro and Tucson, Arizona. Qualitative as well as quantitative techniques were used to analyze these data, so that cultural values and beliefs could be identified along with statistically significant differences in the teachers' responses. When historical and cultural factors affecting secondary education were examined, five major patterns were identified. These patterns were related to the role of the Catholic church in education, the social function of education, centralization of the educational system, the social and political organizations shaping secondary education, and funding for education. Questionnaire responses indicated that low pay was the most important factor affecting job satisfaction for both Brazilian and American secondary teachers. There were significant differences, however, in the social rankings of education related professions in the two countries. Brazilian teachers ranked the professions of University professor and elementary teachers significantly lower than did the American teachers. American teachers ranked the profession of school principal significantly lower than did the Brazilian teachers. The two groups of teachers shared similar feelings about the effects of factors such as national politics and parental cooperation on their professions.

One such application of interest to the military services is the study of stores separation from aircraft. This type of testing has traditionally used high-speed film to gather data, however, there are many disadvantages to using film, such as the high cost of raw film, as well as the high processing expense after it has been exposed. In addition, there is no way to review data from film until it has been processed, nor is there any way to preview in real-time other conditions such as lighting which may affect the outcome of a test event. This paper discusses the characteristics of television systems with respect to motion picture systems, the challenges of recording and transmitting pictures, as well as the nature of what the first and eventual desired systems might be.

Syfte och frågeställningar Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att undersöka om det finns stöd i nuvarande forskning för att en fettrik kost är mer effektiv som nutritionsstrategi vid uthållighetsprestationer jämfört med en kolhydratrik kost. Studiens frågeställningar är: Förbättras uthållighetsprestationen av en fettrik kost jämfört med en kolhydratrik kost? Hur påverkas kolhydrat- och fettmetabolismen av en högfett- och lågkolhydratkost? Metod Litteratursökningen genomfördes i databaserna Ebsco, Pubmed och Cinahl. Totalt inkluderades 16 artiklar, 11 artiklar från litteratursökningen i databaserna och 5 artiklar från valda referenslistor. Studierna kvalitetsgranskades med hjälp av SBU:s granskningsmall för randomiserade kontrollerade studier. Resultat I 3 av 16 studier förbättrades uthållighetprestationen vid intag av högfett- och lågkolhydratkost, i 4 av 16 studier försämrades prestationen och i resterande 9 studier sågs ingen signifikant skillnad i prestationen mellan kostinterventionerna. Majoriteten av studierna fick en förhöjd fettoxidation som resultat av en högfett- och lågkolhydratkost men ingen signifikant skillnad gällande blodglukos-, blodinsulin- eller blodlaktatvärde mellan kostinterventionerna. Slutsats Trots en förhöjd fettoxidation och välfyllda glykogenlager finns inte tillräcklig evidens för att påvisa en generell prestationshöjning vid uthållighetsprestationer av en högfettkost jämfört med en högkolhydratkost. Detta troligtvis på grund av nedsatt förmåga hos musklerna att använda glykogen. Resultaten från de studier som ingick i denna systematiska litteraturstudie visar konsekvent en försämrad prestation efter intag av högfett- och lågkolhydratkost vid arbetsintensiteter över 80% av VO2max. Vid arbetsintensiteter omkring 60-70% av VO2max kan prestationen eventuellt förbättras efter intag av högfettkost bestående av 60-70% fett och mindre än 15% kolhydrater. / Aim The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is scientific evidence that a high fat diet is more effective as a nutrition strategy for endurance performance than a high carbohydrate diet is. The objectives of the study are: Does endurance performance improve by a high fat diet compared by a high carbohydrate diet? How is the metabolism of fat and carbohydrate affected by a high fat and low carbohydrate diet? Method The literature search was conducted in the databases Ebsco, Pubmed and Cinahl. A total of 16 studies was included, 11 studies from the literature search and 5 studies from selected reference lists. The studies quality was audited by SBU: s questionnaire for randomized controlled studies. Results Endurance performance was enhanced after ingesting a high fat- and low carbohydrate diet in 3 of 16 studies and was decreased in 4 of 16 studies. In the remaining 9 studies there was no significant difference in performance between the two trials. A high fat- and low carbohydrate diet resulted in an increased fat oxidation in the majority of the studies but there was no significant difference in bloodglucose-, blodinsulin- or blodlactatelevels between the two trials. Conclusions Despite increased fat oxidation and well-filled glycogen levels there is not sufficient evidence to prove that endurance performance will be enhanced by a high fat diet compared to a high carbohydrate diet. This is probably because of a lower ability of the muscles to use glycogen. The results from this systematic review consequently shows a decreased performance after a high fat- and low carbohydrate diet at work intensities over 80% of VO2max. At intensities around 60-70% of VO2max, the performance can possibly be enhanced after a high fat diet consisting 60-70% of fat and 15% or lower of carbohydrate.
