Peter Schat's Tone Clock: The Steering Function and Pitch-Class Set Transformation in Genen

Fernandez Ibarz, Erik January 2015 (has links)
Dutch composer Peter Schat’s (1935-2003) pursuit of a compositional system that could generate and preserve intervallic relationships, while allowing the composer as much flexibility as possible to manipulate musical material, led him to develop the tone-clock system. Fundamentally comprised of the twelve possible trichords, the tone clock permits each to generate a complete twelve-tone series through the “steering” principle, a concept traced to Boulez’s technique of pitch-class set multiplication. This study serves as an overview of Schat’s tone-clock system and focuses primarily on the effects of the steering function in “Genen” (2000). Furthermore, I expand on the tone-clock system by combining transformational theory with Julian Hook’s uniform triadic transformations and my proposed STEER and STEERS functions, which express the procedures of the steering principle as a mathematical formula. Using a series of transformational networks, I illustrate the unifying effect steering has on different structural levels in “Genen,” a post-tonal composition.

A Hauntology of Sheila Watson's The Double Hook

Brubacher, William 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis consists of a study of haunting, both at the textual and fictional level, in Sheila Watson’s The Double Hook. In this hauntology of the novel, I explore the texts and cultural archetypes that haunt Watson’s novel as well as the ghosts, spectral figures, and haunting spaces and places represented in the novel. The theoretical movement of hauntology introduced by Jacques Derrida in Specters of Marx is a fundamental work in contemporary studies of the tropes of the Gothic and of a more generalized haunting that threatens notions of stability in our understanding of existence. Moreover, the haunting figures and texts in Watson’s novel subvert the heterogenous conception of a national discourse in Canada. The insights provided by scholars such as Marlene Goldman, Margaret Turner, and Cynthia Sugars, who are concerned with what Watson’s use of spectral figures in her narrative accomplishes in relation to writing the settler-colonizer nation of Canada, contribute to informing my argument about the place Watson’s novel occupies in the Canadian collective imaginary. In the first chapter of this thesis, I focus on the textual hauntings in the pages of Watson’s novel. Indigenous myths, Christian rituals, conventions of the western and regional novel, and modernist texts haunt the novel’s structure, content, and the language that constitutes it. In the second chapter of this thesis, I direct my attention towards the haunting and haunted figures that exist in the world created by Watson. In both chapters, my goal is to converse with the specters I see in the novel, to give a voice to what is not explicitly said and to find what lies between the fragments of Watson’s experimental prose.

Development of Safety Measures of Bicycle Trafflc by Observation wffh Deep-Leamlng, Drive Recorder Data, Probe Blcycle wlth LIDAR, and Connected Simulators

Yoshida, Nagahiro, Yamanaka, Hideo, Matsumoto, Shuichi, Hiraoka, Toshihiro, Kawai, Yasuhiro, Kojima, Aya, Inagaki, Tomoyuki 03 January 2023 (has links)
This research outlines the development of evaluating safety measures for bicycle traffic using state-of-the-art technology, which was started since 2020 as a four-year project. The project is funded by the Commission on Advanced Road Technology in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism(MLIT). While Japan has a high bicycle modal share of 12% (2010), bicycle-related fatalities are relatively high among other countries in the IRTAD database (2019). Under these circumstances, since 2007, various measures for bicycle traffic measures have been implemented to improve the safe bicycle traffic environment, including the revision of the Road Traffic Act and the formulation of a national plan to promote bicycle use. However, serious accidents involving bicycles are remained in some specific cases. According to the government's traffic accident analysis results (2019), right-hook crash at signalized intersections are one of the most serious types of collision involving bicycles, along with accidents at unsignalized intersections involving vehicles turning left, rear-end collisions, and single vehicle accidents due to off-road deviation. In particular, proactive safety measures are required at signalized intersections along arterial roads, where electric personal mobility vehicles traveling at speeds of up to 20 km/h are expected to share with bicycles in the future. In order to evaluate safety measures for bicycle-vehicle crashes, this project set the following goals. 1) Identify factors influencing near-miss incidents and collisions through analysis of drive recorder data and accident statistical data. 2) Detailed analysis of traffic conditions from the cyclist's perspective using a probe bicycle equipped with a LiDAR sensor. 3) Development of an experimental environment using a connected simulator for evaluation of cooperative driving behavior. 4) Clarification of experimental conditions to evaluate different scenarios and conditions with and without intervention. 5) Proposal of effective interventions to improve crash cases based on experiments.

Eulerian calculus arising from permutation statistics / Calcul Eulériens sur permutations

Lin, Zhicong 29 April 2014 (has links)
In 2010 Chung-Graham-Knuth proved an interesting symmetric identity for the Eulerian numbers and asked for a q-analog version. Using the q-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Shareshian-Wachs we find such a q-identity. Moreover, we provide a bijective proof that we further generalize to prove other symmetric qidentities using a combinatorial model due to Foata-Han. Meanwhile, Hyatt has introduced the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions to study the joint distribution of the excedance number and major index on colored permutations. Using the Decrease Value Theorem of Foata-Han we give a new proof of his main generating function formula for the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. Furthermore, certain symmetric q-Eulerian identities are generalized and expressed as identities involving the colored Eulerian quasisymmetric functions. Next, generalizing the recent works of Savage-Visontai and Beck-Braun we investigate some q-descent polynomials of general signed multipermutations. The factorial and multivariate generating functions for these q-descent polynomials are obtained and the real rootedness results of some of these polynomials are given. Finally, we study the diagonal generating function of the Jacobi-Stirling numbers of the second kind by generalizing the analogous results for the Stirling and Legendre-Stirling numbers of the second kind. It turns out that the generating function is a rational function, whose numerator is a polynomial with nonnegative integral coefficients. By applying Stanley’s theory of P-partitions we find combinatorial interpretations of those coefficients

Kontrola bezpečnostního mechanismu přípojných vozidel / Analysis the safety mechanism of the trailers

Pantůček, Michal January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis is engaged in the analysis of a safety mechanism, which is a part of a truck trailer. This mechanism provides a safe and firm connection of a container to the trailer. Primarily abroll containers according to German standard DIN 30 722 are being transported. The introductory part of the thesis deals with the current traffic condition and the accident rate in the Czech Republic. Legislative requirements for safety elements of trailer technology for road transportation are further defined. They are followed by a recherche of industrial solutions for securing mechanisms. Consequently calculations to obtain necessary securing force were performed. An analysis of the mechanism kinematics was carried out then. A structural check of selected mechanism elements was carried out following the kinematics check. Further, an optimalization of a transom design was carried out followed by another structural check. The structural checks were carried out using both the analytical method and the finite element method. In conclusion design documentation was elaborated. This diploma thesis was elaborated in cooperation with the SVAN Chrudim s.r.o.
