The best practices of diversity management / The best practices of diversity management

Wolters, Janneke Marjolein January 2014 (has links)
This thesis describes and analyses diversity management and its best practices (with the focus on nationalities and cultures). The central question in this research is: 'what are the essential elements of diversity management to effectively manage diversity within organizations?' Via desk- and field research (interviews and questionnaires) information is obtained to answer this question and other sub questions of the thesis. Nowadays, organizations have to adapt themselves to a rapidly changing environment, both internal and external. Companies have to deal with a continuously evolving labor- and sales market, which is the result of various factors, including the changing demographic composition and globalization. Organizations cannot longer ignore diversity and should take it into account, to ensure that the company will not face any future problems related to recruiting, efficiency, innovation, growth, et cetera. Based on the conducted research, it became clear that implementing diversity management consists out of several stages, namely: 1. Establish diversity council and appoint diversity contact officer who together bear the main diversity responsibilities; 2. Previous diversity initiatives should be visualized; 3. Organizational data must be collected; 4. Diversity strategy and priority areas must be set up (inclusive organizational culture, management support and awareness & commitment); 5. Establish diversity policy (allowance of country-by-country deviations) and 6. Define diversity tools (recruitment, training, mentoring & coaching, career development, linkage diversity & performance, benefits/other factors and partnering with external bodies). During these different stages, it is important to communicate with all employees, since this will create support, awareness and commitment to diversity. After the process has been completed, it is important to monitor and evaluate the diversity vision, policy and tools. Main conclusions that can be drawn from the research are the following: 1. Diversity brings more advantages than disadvantages; 2. Management team diversity is of great importance; 3. Inclusive organizational culture is essential; 4. Diversity management must be integrated and 5. Attractiveness of diversity management should be promoted. In addition, the conducted research made clear that companies should spend more time and energy to diversity management and they should really focus on their 'ability to execute', since this will bring many advantages and will avoid future problems.

Možnosti využití sociálních sítí v řízení lidských zdrojů / Possibilities of Using Social Media in Human Resource Management

Libertin, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
The presented study focuses on online social media and possibilities of their use in human resource management. The aim of the study is to define recommendations for a more effective application of social media and their tools in HR management, based on an analysis of social media tools and evaluation of results of a research carried out among Czech organizations. The study also attempts to identify the potential use of individual online social media in the respective HR activities. The study consists of a theoretical and an analytical part. The theoretical part first describes social media as a whole and then presents a description of the most common social networking services. The analytical part comprises three chapters. One chapter includes an analysis of social media tools and their potential use in the respective HR activities, while another chapter contains a description and analysis of the results of a research examining the use of social media in HR practice of Czech organizations. The final chapter presents a comparison of the outputs of both analyses. Recommendations for a more effective use of social media in HR practice are then defined based on this comparison. The outcomes of this comparison include the finding that practical use is in accordance with the defined potential only in the case of LinkedIn, which is by far the most used social networking service in Czech organizations. Facebook is the second; however, the extent to which it is used does not fully match the possibilities it offers. This also holds for other social media, particularly in terms of their use for recruitment and HR marketing, the most suitable HR activity for social media. The recommendations defined for using social media in HR practice of Czech organizations therefore mainly include greater diversification of the range of these tools used in recruitment and HR marketing, leading to addressing different types of job candidates and to better employer branding, and screening job candidates on various social networking services, using as many resources as possible.

The HR challenge of attraction and retention : a survey of information technology graduates in information communication technology companies

Hackney, Chenay 19 April 2013 (has links)
Graduate recruitment is an activity that is practiced by many organisations and HR professionals in South Africa (SAGRA, 2012), yet there is still much to learn about the challenge of what graduates perceive to be the most important factors in attracting and retaining them. In addition, it is generally known that the information and communications technology (ICT) industry is at “war for talent” (McKinsey&Company, 2007) among IT graduates due to the scarcity of the IT skills set (ITWEB, 2008). IT News Africa (2012) reports that South Africa has a growing shortage of skilled workers within the information and communication technology (ICT) field. This can particularly be indicated by the numbers released by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, which for instance, has issued a detailed list of 7,600 open ICT technical job vacancies (IT News Africa, 2012). The objectives of the study were: (1) to determine what firstly attracts IT graduates to ICT companies, and (2) to determine what retains these IT graduates. The purpose of this was to assist HR managers to overcome the challenge of attraction and retention within the ICT industry. Data for this study was collected by means of an online survey, namely the IT Graduate Recruitment Survey, on a purposive sample (N = 172) of IT graduates in the South African IT sector. Descriptive frequency, median, ranking and chi-square statistics revealed significant insight into the IT graduate’s perspective of attraction and retention factors. The main findings indicate that the top attraction factors for IT graduates include interest in the prospective organisation’s specific products, the services it provides and the employer’s brand in the industry; the overall reputation of the employer; career opportunities; security of employment; and to be able to make use of the IT qualification for which they studied. The two most influential advertising techniques to attract IT graduates are people who already work in the industry, and employer websites. The top retention factors include the availability of opportunities for further study, being supported by the employer and future career opportunities. The findings contribute valuable insight and knowledge to the field of Human Resource Management that can be applied in the recruitment, selection and talent management processes in relation to IT graduates in the ICT industry. Future research could compare different ethnic, gender and qualification groups – i.e. an IT degree candidate versus a diploma candidate – and their expectations when entering the workplace. The impact of on-boarding and induction can also be investigated in terms of the impact these have on retention. It is also recommended that researchers conduct in-depth qualitative interviews together with the current questionnaire to evaluate IT students’ and graduates’ perceptions of the viable attraction and retention techniques more critically. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted
