Within the area under consideration there are two great series of strata. The lower one is known as the Purcell-Belt Series and is divided into two main groups. A widespread unconformity separates the Purcell Series from the younger and overlying Windermere Series.
The Lower Purcell-Belt group consists of the Aldridge-Prichard, Creston-Ravalli, Kitchener-Wallace, and Siyeh-Striped Peak. They were deposited under marine conditions from the erosion of a western Precambrian Cascadia.
The Upper Purcell-Belt group consists of the Dutch Creek, Mount Nelson and their equivalents in Canada and the Missoula Group of Montana and possibly the Priest River group of Washington. This group is separated from the Lower Purcell by a period of diastrophism marked by the intrusion of Purcell sills and the extrusion of Purcell lavas. The Upper Purcell-Belt sediments were derived from the positive areas as a result of the preceding crusted disturbance.
The Purcell-Belt times were closed by large scale orogeny called the "Purcell Uplift". The north-south trending belt of Purcell mountains formed a landmass which greatly affected lower Palaeozoic stratigraphy. This positive area is commonly referred to as the "Montana Island". The Precambrian portion of the Windermere Series includes the Toby-Shedroof conglomerate, Irene Deola volcanics and the Horsethief Creek-Monk formations. The clastic formations were derived from the Purcell Mountains and deposited on their western flank. Marine conditions arose during Horsethief Creek times.
The Cambrian portion of the Windermere Series was deposited in a north-south trending geosynclinal trough which extended from the Metaline quadrangle to the Field-Golden area of the Rocky Mountains and probably beyond. It includes the lower quartzitic Hamill Group and the overlying limy and argillaceous Lardeau group. They were deposited as the shoreline transgressed south and east over the "Montana Island" and reduced it from one of high relief to one of low relief. The Kimama Core: A 6.4 Ma Record of Volcanism, Sedimentation, and Magma Petrogenesis on the Axial Volcanic High, Snake River Plain, IDPotter, Katherine Elizabeth 01 May 2014 (has links)
The Snake River Plain (SRP) is one of the best-preserved examples of continental hotspot volcanis, with a continuous record of volcanism that extends over 16 Ma to the present. Yellowstone-Snake River Plain records the migration of plume-tail volcanism from inception at the Bruneau-Jarbridge caldera complex at 12.6 Ma to its present locus, under the Yellowstone Plateau.
Records kept by the Snake River Plain volcanic actions include rhyolite lavas and ignimbritesm minor coeval basalts, and an overlying veneer of younger basalts. The central SRP has received comparatively little attention in the past. The Kimama core hole was drilled as part of Project Hotspot, the Snake River Scientific Drilling Project, which seeks to understand the long-term volcanic and sediment logical history of the SRP volcanic province.
The Kimama core hole is the only part of the SRP that has not been scientifically drilled and cored to a significant depth in the past. Investigations of subsurface stratigraphy in continental volcanic provinces such as the SRP-YP are limited by the by the relatively low depth and spatial distribution of cored wells. The study of the Kimama core provides us with a continuous record of basalt and minor sediment deposition.
The long-term volcanic history of the SRP, documented by moving magma and its composition, demonstrates that magmatism is mantle plume-derived. Our investigation of the Kimama core, combined with new mantle tomography, provides evidence that refutes non-plume models for the origin of the Snake River Plain volcanic province.

Evaluation of Paleo-climate for the Boise Area, Idaho, from the last Glacial Maximum to the Present Based on delta 2H and delta 18O Groundwater CompositionSchlegel, Melissa Eileen 18 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
There are four distinguishable groundwater systems in the Boise area, Idaho, U.S.A., identified as modern batholith, thermal batholith, Boise frontal fault, and Nampa-Caldwell systems (Figure 1). Modern batholith and thermal batholith groundwaters are located in Tertiary to Cretaceous aged granites and granodiorites of the Atlanta lobe of the Idaho Batholith. The frontal fault system near Boise, ID defines the southeastern edge of the Idaho Batholith, and divides the batholith from the western Snake River Plain. The Nampa-Caldwell system is in the volcanic, fluvial and pluvial sediments of the western Snake River Plain. Groundwater ages for these systems are modern, 5-15 ka, 10-20 ka, and 20-40 ka respectively. Local meteoric water lines (LMWL) using the delta 2H and delta 18O composition of the groundwater were defined for each system using linear regression techniques. LMWL had variable and defined single slopes of 6.94 and 8. Deuterium excess values (d) were found for each system for each linear regression method. Relative differences of the deuterium excess value assuming the two single slope methods were similar. Changes in moisture source humidity and temperature, and Boise area recharge temperatures calculated from stable isotopic data and the deuterium excess factor agree with other published data. At the moisture source there was a 9% humidity increase and a 7-6 °C decrease of sea surface temperature between the present and the last glacial maximum (LGM). The local temperature decreased 4-5 °C from the present to the LGM for the Boise area.

The purpose of this study is to determine the value of a master's degree in construction management in southern Idaho. A telephone and Internet survey was employed to determine the value that members of the construction industry in southern Idaho place on construction management (CM) degrees, both graduate and undergraduate. The survey included 27 self-described general contractors who are members of The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) in regions 3 and 4 in the state of Idaho. Regions three and four include Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Ketchum, Burley and surrounding communities. Following the compilation of surveys, it was found that the group of participants 1) knew there was a bachelor's degree in CM; however, some didn't realize there was a master's degree in CM; 2) felt that education is sometimes over rated; 3) perceived no difference in hiring an undergraduate v. a graduate in terms of monetary value. There was a perceived value in a master's degree itself.

Self-Organizing Fluid Flow Patterns in Crystalline Rock: Theoretical Approach to the Hydrothermal Systems in the Middle Fork of the Boise RiverHimes, Scott A. 25 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The thermal springs along the Middle Fork of the Boise River (MFBR) within the Atlanta lobe of the Idaho batholith discharge in discrete locations that appear to be part of self-organizing flow systems. Infiltrating water flows through Basin and Range fractures to depth where it is heated and ultimately discharged at the intersection of trans-Challis oriented faults along the MFBR. Isotopic compositions of the thermal waters have a linear trend with elevation suggesting that the recharge locations are near each thermal spring and the hydrothermal system is not one large interconnected system, but rather multiple individual hydrothermal systems. Water chemically evolves along the hydrothermal flow paths dissolving feldspars and precipitating secondary minerals. PHREEQC inverse modeling of the chemical evolution based on identified minerals within the system predicts positive volume changes in the pore space within the hydrothermal flow systems can occur. Precipitation of secondary minerals is likely to occur in the cooler, subsidiary, less-efficient fractures of the hydrothermal system. Flow areas calculated using heat flow, exponential decay, and a combination of the two, show that the topographic watershed is inadequate to accommodate the water supporting the thermal springs indicating that water is being captured from outside the watershed. The positive volume changes coupled with the water capture is evidence of positive feedback loops are active within the hydrothermal system providing a mechanism for self-organization to occur in the hydrothermal systems of granite.

The Upper Snake River area was a center of much fur trade activity during the first half of the 1800's. It has many streams and they had abundant quantities of the furs that were being sought by the large parties of men who came into the country.The early explorers of the Pacific coast hastened the exploration and development of the interior. As they moved along the shores they recorded the possibilities of the riches that were there and helped to form the opinions in each country of how valuable it would be to own the Northwest. This desire to get a good claim on the land brought the explorers by land. First Alexander McKenzie came across Canada to the Pacific. By 1804 the United States was making its bid by sending Lewis and Clark to explore the Missouri River and to make their way to the Pacific, giving the Americans a real claim on the country.
