An examination of the influence of religiosity on political views of the millennial generationDeGenaro, Kelsey 01 May 2013 (has links)
The millennial generation is said to consist of all those born between the years of 1978 and 1996. The majority has come of age and has the ability to be active participants in the political community. For the past three elections they have been the democratic party biggest supporters. In the 2008 presidential election 68% of all Millennial voters voted for Barack Obama. Millennials are also reporting to be less religious and more spiritual. They are attending religious services less frequently and identify with religious denominations less often. Throughout American history, religion is known to have an effect on political ideologies. So with Millennials religiosity changing, does their religiosity have any effect on their political ideology? The purpose of my research is to examine the religious ideologies of Millennials and see how they are affecting their political ideologies. To collect my data I have surveyed 380 Millennials. I choose to take a quantitative approach to this research project and use statistics as the basis of my analysis. My research is important to my discipline as well as my society because it closes the gaps between existing research of the Millennial generation. This research also contributes to literature because it is important to understand the political and religious views of the upcoming generation. Millennials have the ability to make huge political statements, and their decisions, attitudes, and behavior will significantly impact the future of the United States.

Previous issue date: 2007-08-17 / Since its origins in the second half of the 19th century, Brazilian Protestantism is characterized by its affinity with the written and spoken word. This research is related to
this fact, specifically to the written word as it is found in the journals of the numerous Protestant denominations. The denominational journals are important both as ideology
supporters or crashers. This way, this work starts from what is written on political and social issues in the articles and printed texts found in the Brazilian evangelical journals,
related to the events that characterized the transition from the monarchical government to the republican one. Thus, the primary sources used here are the Protestant newspapers of the end of 19th and beginning of the 20th century, notedly: Imprensa Evangélica, O Estandarte, O Jornal Batista e o Expositor Cristão, respectively: Presbyterian, Baptist and Methodist. The formulated question can be expressed as
follows: To what extent the Protestants, through the discourse printed in their journals, expressed their political position? The theoretical basis adopted here used the concepts of rhetoric acts formulated by Tereza Halliday, applied in the understanding of the missionaries, reverend and church written discourses. According to this theory, the
written or spoken words are always used to blame or defend, criticize or praise, explain, propose or justify known realities, this is why we are rhetoric beings, use a language as
a means of change or reinforcement of perceptions, feelings, values, positioning and actions. By assuming that the transition from Monarchy to Republic in Brazil caused
conflicts, this research intends, though discourse analysis, to realize to what extent the Protestant press addressed what happened then. To that, once the primary sources were
chosen, it was made a reading of the texts according to its relevance to the proposed aim. This material was selected, then organized and its discourse analyzed from the
stand point of the a priori categories. By analyzing it as a phenomenon related to the field of the Social Sciences, we studied the Protestants written discourse, supporting
ideologies, imaginative aspects as well as the way they represented the Brazilian and evangelical societies.(AU) / O protestantismo brasileiro, desde as suas origens na segunda metade do século XIX, é identificado pela leitura e pela palavra.
saber: Imprensa Evangélica, O Estandarte, O Jornal Batista e o Expositor Cristão, respectivamente: presbiteriano, batista e metodista.
a imprensa protestante retratou aqueles acontecimentos.

Official voices of a revolution : a social history of Islamic republican poetryShams-Esmaeili, Fatemeh January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is primarily concerned with the literary aspects of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Its immediate focus rests on the evolution of the Islamic republican poetic trend, encompassing both the disillusioned and conformist voices that rose to prominence in the course of the 1979 Revolution and their on-going engagement with the ruling political power. In this vein, this thesis investigates the various cultural policies of the state, as well as select political transformations of the past three decades, all of which played a pivotal role in this literary evolution. The thesis shows how the official poets that emerged during the 1979 Revolution, and which proved significantly active throughout the immediate history subsequent to that event (war with Iraq, the death of Ayatollah Khomeini and the rise and fall of the reform movement), evolved over time and thereby either received political support for their commitment to the state ideology or became gradually excluded from official cultural institutions. Finally, this thesis reviews the manner in which state strategies have shaped an institutionalised form of poetry that is monitored and reinforced by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic and official cultural authorities. It demonstrates how an innate linking of the project of Islamic republican literature to underlying ideologically defined notions such as 'religious verse', 'legitimate poetry' and 'commitment' was and continues to be an intrinsic part of the literary foundations of the ideological apparatus of the Islamic Republic.
