Para o Brasil, a previsão é de 32 milhões de pessoas com 60 anos ou mais, constituindo a sexta maior população idosa do mundo. A internação de idosos em Instituições de Longa Permanência (ILP) tem aumentado. Nesta pesquisa, os referenciais teóricos pautaram-se nas pesquisas sobre a velhice sob a perspectiva das ciências sociais, nos estudos sobre instituição total e na perspectiva de gênero. Buscamos entender como se dá o processo de institucionalização, quais as repercussões na vida da mulher idosa e de que maneira ela enfrenta o envelhecimento. O estudo foi desenvolvido através da metodologia exploratória e abordagem qualitativa. O campo da pesquisa foi uma ILP para idosos, que atende 110 pessoas procedentes da região do Alto Uruguai, com idades entre 60 a 105 anos, sendo 80% do sexo feminino. Regarding Brazil, the expectation is 32 million people over 60 years old constituting the sixth biggest aged population in the world. In this study, the theoretical background is based on studies about aging under the perspective of social sciences, total institution category and gender studies. We tried to understand how the process of institutionalization takes place, what the repercussions on the life of aged women are and how they face aging in asylums.
