Etude sur corpus écrit de l’imparfait en français standard et en français du Liban, avec applications didactiques / Study of the "imparfait" tense in standard and Lebanese written French corpus, with didactic applications

Abdel Nour, Rita 21 October 2011 (has links)
The expression of temporality in French is ensured by temporal and aspectual markers, particularly by the tense. In the verbal system, several tenses participate in the expression of the past, especially the “imparfait”. Our study of this tense coding the following instructions: past, imperfective, not autonomous is based on the model of the Sémantique de la temporalité SDT (Gosselin, 1996).The application of the model on a written corpus of standard French allowed (1) a quantitative approach of the “effets de sens” (typical, non typical and derivative uses) (2) a detailed analysis of these uses shows that the resolve of the “repetitive”, “narrative”, “de rupture”, etc. values present some hesitations depending on textual elements. Indeed this tense only can be apprehended in interaction with other temporal and aspectual marks: type of process, other tenses usage, adverbial elements, referential relation between dependant propositions, etc.Teaching this tense in an institutional context in Lebanon to advanced level students (lower stage) constitutes one of the stakes of this research which offers an application of the model of SDT for the analysis of written language for the Lebanese learners (unstable French). After an explanation of the successes and the mistakes in the usages of this tense, a didactic application of the model is offered based on Lebanese students’ needs and skills. Keywords: imparfait, temporality, French verbal system, French didactic, errors, skills, interference

New dimensions in regional economic co-operation and integration in Southern Africa

Mondlane, Angelo Eduardo January 1998 (has links)
In the last three decades regional economic co-operation and integration attracted a great deal of interest in Southern Africa, as elsewhere in the Third World. Early attempts at regional integration in Southern Africa were generally characterised by poor and disappointing performance. Recent changes at both regional and international contexts suggest the need to rethink regional integration as part of an overall economic development strategy and as means to attain further political and security stability. This thesis examines the theory and practice of regional integration in developing countries during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Particular focus is directed at the theoretical and practical implications of different integration approaches for Southern Africa, as well as at the rationale for the revival of this development strategy in the 1990s. Integration schemes of various conceptual natures did not fulfil the expectations included either in the theoretical postulates or in the formal treaties. However, macroeconomic reforms centred in SAPs and their international development context as well as the post-apartheid regional context add new dimensions to regional co-operation and integration for development in the SAR. Among other things they imply a change in the emphasis from inward-looking to outward-looking integration strategies. By yielding the need for reconciling trade liberalisation and RECI this new dimension in integration poses a new challenge to both the contemporary integration approaches and the respective policy implications. Further research is required to determine the optimality of an "adjusted" integration approach, combining elements of the above perspectives.

Analyses of SNR estimation for OFDM systems with imperfect synchronization in Rayleigh fading channel

Chang, Chih-chao 27 August 2007 (has links)
In this thesis, two signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) estimators are analyzed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with imperfect synchronization. The two SNR estimators under investigation are the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and the second- and fourth-order moments estimator (MME). Mathematical analysis shows that the performance of MME is not affected by the advanced timing offset while a fixed bias of MLE is induced. Mathematical analysis also shows that the same frequency offset induces different bias for the two estimators under investigation. Finally, a novel carrier frequency offset and timing offset tracking scheme based on SNR estimation is proposed in this thesis.

Some Models and Tests for Carryover Effects and Trends in Recurrent Event Processes

Cigsar, Candemir January 2010 (has links)
Recurrent events experienced by individual units or systems occur in many fields. The main target of this thesis is to develop formal tests for certain features of recurrent event processes, and to discuss their properties. In particular, carryover effects and time trends are considered. The former is related to clustering of events together in time, and the latter refers to a tendency for the rate of event occurrence to change over time in some systematic way. Score tests are developed for models incorporating carryover effects or time trends. The tests considered are easily interpreted and based on simple models but have good robustness properties against a range of carryover and trend alternatives. Asymptotic properties of test statistics are discussed when the number of processes approaches infinity as well as when one process is under observation for a long time. In applications involving multiple systems or individuals, heterogeneity is often apparent, and there is a need for tests developed for such cases. Allowance for heterogeneity is, therefore, considered. Methods are applied to data sets from industry and medicine. The results are supported by simulation studies.
