The editorial policy of the Indiana press towards Indiana Indians, 1804-1838Rouner, Donna Lea January 1975 (has links)
This thesis involves the study of editorials published in Indiana newspapers from 1804 – 1838 concerning the subject of Indiana Indians. Approximately 120 newspapers were examined in order to determine the general editorial policy of the Indiana frontier press toward Indians who occupied the state at that time. The research covered the time period beginning in 1804, when the first newspaper originated in Indiana Territory, until 1838, when the last significant Indian emigration out of the state occurred. It was discovered these editorials about Indiana Indians were published infrequently, usually regarded the Indians in their relationship to white settlers and followed the general government policies toward the Indians.

This thesis has examined the effectiveness of the administration of the Indiana Uniform Consumer Credit Code by the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions. The overall effectiveness was analyzed in terms of three broad criteria: (1) the ability of the regulatory provisions of the law to be correctly interpreted and applied; (2) the prospective ability of the enforcement mechanisms of the law to halt, restrain, redress the effect of, and deter violations; and (3) the willingness of the administrative agency to efficiently and effectively utilize the administrative powers and perform the administrative duties delegated to it. Each was scrutinized independently in preparing the findings for and deriving the conclusions from this study.The writer found that the Code was extremely complex and difficult to interpret; that the enforcement mechanisms were far from ideal; and that the Department generally failed to compensate for these weaknesses as shown by the unaggressive utilization of its administrative powers and the complete failure to carry out certain of its administrative duties.

Cemeteries have both problems and opportunities which have not been considered by land use planners. These problems include the consumption of land that might have a better use, the concealing of below-grade resources, pollution, vandalism and others. The opportunities are that cemeteries have multiple land use potential.A survey of cemeteries in Delaware County, Indiana, brings clearness to policies for American planners. Some of that clearness is that the older abandoned cemeteries have potential for recreation, for open space preservation and for historic preservation. The modern cemeteries which are still receiving burials are living symbols of how society is currently dealing with death. These must be left primarily for this purpose. The future holds the best opportunities. The question for the future is not: "Where shall we put the next cemetery?" But, more clearly, there are two questions--each of which has a separate set of answers. One is: "How do we dispose of the body?" The use of soil characterization information in the correlation of Wisconsinan-age glacial drift in Randolph County, IndianaAnderson, Noel P. January 1988 (has links)
The upland soils of Randolph County, Indiana were studied for the following purposes: to provide an additional characterization of these soils, to identify a set of soil parameters that could delineate the extent of Late Wisconsinan glaciation in that county and to determine if there were any geographic trends in silt cap thickness. The study was prompted from observations by the recent Randolph County Soil Survey team that high clay content soils commonly associated with the county's Late Wisconsinan till (Lagro Formation) were found south of its previously mapped boundary.The only soil parameters that were effective in mapping the extent of Late Wisconsinan glaciation were: particle size analyses and some combinations of particle size analysis data with other soil parameters. The data support the previously mapped boundary of the Late Wisconsinan sediments in Randolph County, Indiana.Silt cap thickness was identified to be greatest in three areas of the county. Archaeologists have often speculated about the role of soil in the selection of prehistoricarchaeological site locations. These locations may be temporary or permanent settlements as well as isolated finds resulting from transient activities such as hunting. As an ecological factor, it would seem evident that soil played some part in the decision-making process. A review of recent literature reveals limited studies in this area. Several different approaches to the problem have been attempted. Recent research in the Central Indiana Wabash and Maumee drainages has been used develop a predictive model for this selection process based on the location of 890 sites on specific soils. The model has been tested with additional sites from various counties throughout Southern Indiana.The predictive model is based on the percentage of the original 890 sites which were located on each soil and on the resulting probability of finding additional sites on similar soils. The percentage of sites on each soil drainage class from the very poor to the excessively drained classes creates a curve similar to a normal curve. The test sites from the southern part of Indiana create a similar curve. / Department of Anthropology

The purpose of this study was to investigate the time management skills of Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers. The problem accessed in the study are: (1) Do Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers have higher means for time management skills than the established norm (mid level management students) and (2) Is there a difference in the means for time management skills of the Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers by teaching assignment?Three hundred and fifty Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers selected by systematic random sampling design were mailed the instrument with 232 usable responses. The Time Problems Inventory by A. Canfield measured the teachers' time management skills in priority setting, planning, delegation and discipline. Reliability and construct validity were measured with factor analysis. The subjects' teaching assignment was determined with a demographic question.The findings of the study indicated the following:1) Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers' time management skills in the areas of priorities and planning were lower than those of the norm.2) In the area of delegation, the norm group and the home economics teachers showed no significant difference.3) Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers tested significantly above the norm group in the time management skills of discipline.4) The home economics teachers did not differ in management skills by teaching assignment.In total time management skills, Indiana vocational high school home economics teachers are weaker in the areas of planning and priorities. These skills might be strengthened through inservice education. / Department of Home Economics
