Orbit är en innovativ och tillgänglig högtalare för hemmet där upplevelse och funktion har varit kärnan i designen. Läran om ljud i rörelse kallat Kymatik har gett inspiration till att arbeta ur ett nytt perspektiv och gett ett nytt synsätt om hur ljudet rör sig. Högtalarkomponenterna har utformats med okonventionella former för att uppnå fler sätt att rikta ljud och ge uppfattningen om stort ljud från en kompakt högtalare. Miljö, erfarenhet och användare har beaktats för att skapa en långvarig användning av högtalaren. Det borde vara inspirerande och enkelt att komma närmare din musik i olika utrymmen. / Orbit is an innovative and accessible speaker for the home where experience and function have been the core of the design. The study of sound in motion called Cymatics has given inspiration to work from a new perspective and approach about how sound travels. The components of the speaker have been designed with unconventional shapes to achieve more ways of directing sound and give the perception of large sound from a compact speaker.  Environment, experience and users have been taken into consideration to create a long-term use of the speaker. It should be inspiring and easy to get closer to your music in different spaces.

A theory of interdependence within the industrial design function

This thesis has presented a theory regarding the interdependence of product design and process design as applied to industrial organization. The frame of reference used was Everett Laitala’s consumer-to-consumer cycle which separates industrial effort on the common basis of function. The explanation of the possible application and the guidelines developed for use have been very general in nature because the diverse industrial situations to which the theory may be applied prevent detailed instructions from being valid in all cases. The omission of Schedule Design from analysis in the thesis was not felt to be a fatal flaw preventing useful application in industry. / M.S.

Simulation modeling of information flows in decision making processes for design-to-manufacturing strategies

Most successful manufacturing companies were initially formed around a unique or superior product design. As a result of this trend, many companies, especially in high-technology industries, considered design and marketing the company's primary functions. When the United States had superior manufacturing technological capabilities in the 1950's and 1960's, corporate management could systematically neglect manufacturing and still be successful. Manufacturing was treated as a service organization and evaluated in the negative terms of poor quality, low productivity, high wage rates, and so on. Manufacturing was not expected to make a positive contribution to a company's success. Recent successes of the Japanese in building higher quality, lower cost products show the critical error in this philosophy. Manufacturing is now a major factor in a company's competitive position (Priest, 1988). Manufacturing strategies are the framework for accomplishing the long-term corporate goals for the manufacturing function. This framework helps to focus manufacturing goals and provides plans for integrating the necessary functions and resources into a coordinated effort to improve production. Communication of this strategy sets the right climate for the teamwork and long-term planning that are necessary in developing improved manufacturing capabilities. The strategy should be well publicized throughout the company, with regularly scheduled reviews to monitor progress toward the goals. Recently, emphasis on manufacturing strategy, as advocated by leading scholars in the 1970's and 1980's, has been recognized as one way to regain the competitive advantage for American manufacturers. Work carried out recently at Harvard and Stanford by Porter (1985), Skinner (1985), Wheelwright and Hayes (1984) has given more attention to the central role and potential importance of manufacturing; this work helps to explain the relative success of Japanese and Gennan companies. Their work also sets a sound background for further research in this area. However, current studies in manufacturing strategy have delved into technology and financial considerations. But technology, capital, and work force are all planned by the people (managers) who are always located in some kind of organizational structure. Based on the experimental results proposed by industrial psychologists, this research is one step toward a quantitative study of organizational efficiency. Two major types of organizations, hierarchical (serial) and egalitarian (parallel), are investigated by applying simulation techniques. The variables controlled comprise organizational type, number of levels in a hierarchical structure, and number of participants. The research results are also applied to investigate the applicability of current design-to-manufacturing strategies, such as simultaneous engineering and concurrent design in firms. Suggestions on how to reduce the design-to-manufacturing time through appropriate organizational structures are presented following analysis of the simulation results. / Master of Science

The application of experimental design in an activity-based environment

The aim of this thesis is to carry out research into the application of experimental design in an activity-based environment; specifically into the methodology and potential application of experimental design and analysis as an activity-based management decision support tool in the general manufacturing, systems engineering and logistics engineering fields. This thesis will detail the author's research into the decision support framework that will be introduced in Chapter 1.0 and developed during the thesis. Chapter 2.0 will introduce activity-based management and develop a systems dynamics model of a US industrial enterprise. Experimental design and analysis will be introduced in Chapter 3.0. The development of a knowledge-based expert system (KBES) trainer called DESIGNS.ART will be covered in Chapter 4.0, and' a copy of the program has been included in Appendix A This KBES trainer has been designed to train engineers in US industry in the application of experimental design and analysis. Chapter 5.0 discusses the potential application of experimental design and analysis in each of the three fields. Chapter 6.0 combines experimental design and analysis with activity-based management by fully developing the activity-based management (ABM) framework introduced in Chapter 1.0. Chapter 6.0 includes a hypothetical case study of the ABM framework in operation. Chapter 7.0 proposes that this ABM framework be integrated into a US firm which has implemented activity-based costing. This research into the integration of experimental design and analysis with activity-based management in systems engineering, logistics engineering and general manufacturing is original, and it results in a contribution to both the systems engineering, logistics engineering and the general manufacturing fields. / Master of Science

A microprocessor based development system for the P-50 industrial robot

With the current interest in the control of robots, the need for an industrial robot as a research tool has become preeminent. This thesis presents the concepts and the design for a microprocessor based development system for the P-50 Process Robot, in an effort to convert it into a Robot Control Development System. Various control philosophies were reviewed to arrive at a hierarchical control structure that provides maximum flexibility and control over every degree of freedom of the robot arm. The working of the original controller of the P-50 robot was studied in detail to facilitate design of interface circuits that transfer control of the arm to the augmented controller. All the hardware required for the controller was designed and tested. Guidelines for developing the software as well as schematics for constructing the remaining hardware circuits, are provided. The conclusion discusses modifications that could be made to this design and instructions for using the fully developed controller. / M.S.

A tool that easily adjusts without compromising the interaction, the storytelling, or the visual moment, while also capturing as much information as possible, might be of great benefit to all creators of video content. Allowing tutorial creators the ability to efficiently record multiple views of their content may better aid in presenting concepts while retaining the attention of the viewership. The opportunity to present information effectively may have impacts on fields including education as well as entertainment. With such a rich history in ceramics, it is challenging to design a new dinner service set that is functional, enhances the aesthetics of a meal and sustains the intimate relationship of everyday use by adapting to lives. My particular design ideals are expressed in the line quality, section, volume, breadth and visual language of the Galaxy Collection. The survey also investigated how the industrial designer or the design team is situated in new product development process, and in the corporate hierarchy, what kind of investments have been made in the last decades by manufacturers in Turkey on industrial design.
