The social needs of farm workers in the Koup : suggesttions for employee assitance programmes (EAPS) from a social work perspectiveBotes, Jacolise 11 1900 (has links)
Farm workers are viewed as a neglected segment in the South African society. This qualitative research study focused on exploring and describing the social needs of farm workers in the Central Koup from the perspectives of samples comprising of farm workers and farm owners and/or managers. The aim was to contribute in finding solutions to address the identified needs through employee assistance programmes (EAPs) as one of the areas that an occupational social worker focuses on. The qualitative data was collected through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews, and the findings were verified with literature. Tesch’s framework for data analysis (in Creswell, 2003) was employed, and data verification was conducted through Guba’s model (in Krefting, 1991:214-222). The findings indicated that the social needs of farm workers could be addressed through typical EAP-related focus areas such as working- and interpersonal relationships, substance abuse, spiritual well-being, recreation, financial management, conflict management, child care and parenting skills, trauma counselling, and practical assistance regarding transport, housing and accessibility of resources. This research endeavour resulted in recommendations regarding the use of EAPs to address the social needs of farm workers. / M. Soc. Sc.

Practice education placements for undergraduate social work students in the corporate sector of the Western Cape metropole : an exploratory investigationBrown, Iris Cathrine 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Finding practice education placements for undergraduate social work students is
becoming increasingly difficult in the Western Cape Metropolis, because many welfare
agencies have either closed down or do not have the capacity to accommodate students
for field placement. As a result of this situation, this research was undertaken with the aim
to investigate the feasibility of the corporate sector as a field placement for undergraduate
social work students.
By using the corporate sector as a field placement an opportunity can be created whereby
the university and the corporate sector could establish a workable partnership, with
mutual benefits for each. The corporate sector can benefit by services offered by the
students in the form of case-group and community work that can be rendered to the
employees. The university will benefit because a new option for student placements will
become available to them.
The domain of social work in the corporate sector was explored by defining occupational
social work; the nature of service rendering on micro, meso and macro levels and
discussing occupational social work in the 21st century.
Field placements of undergraduate students in the corporate sector were examined in
order to establish what the theoretical background for field placements in a corporate
setting ought to be. To this end, the nature and purpose; formats; settings and key role
players in field placements were explored. Social work methods in social work per se and
occupational social work in general were investigated. An investigation was also made into the management of the field placement programme
for undergraduate social work students in the corporate sector. The following were facets
were explored: the requirements of the department of social work at the University of the
Western Cape for fourth year students as well as the requirements for field placements in
the corporate sector, in order to establish the suitability of the corporate sector for field
placements.
Existing literature and empirical findings were used to collect data for this study.
Exploratory and descriptive research designs were applied in this study. Data was
collected through questionnaires and interviews and conclusions and recommendations
were based on the findings of the study.
sleutel rolspelers in praktykonderrigplasings verken. Maatskaplike werkmetodes in
versamel. Verkennende en beskrywende navorsingsontwerpe is in hierdie studie benut. Deur

The utilisation of community work within a military context : the role of the social workerBagnall, Karen 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Community work fulfils definite functions within the social work milieu and develops
according to a process. The SANDF does not possess any definite guidelines regarding
community work. The resultant consequence is that community work is not utilised to its
full potential in that the client system does not always receive a quality service.
The purpose of this study was to compose a framework for the Directorate of Social Work
within the SANDF, which can serve as a guideline for the possible formulation of a policy
document on community work within social work practice. The objectives of the study are
firstly to provide theoretical and practical guidelines which social workers in a military
setting can follow when utilising community work as a social work method of intervention.
Secondly, to explore the knowledge and skills of social workers in the military within the
SANDF regarding community work. Thirdly, the need for guidelines with regard to
community work within the SANDF, was explored. This study was confined geographically
to the social workers in the military of the Western Province. An exploratory study was
executed in order to achieve the stated goal and objectives. The research methodology
was a quantitative design being a data collection instrument in the form of a questionnaire.
The questionnaire was used to probe skills, knowledge perceptions and attitudes relating
to community work and to determine the impact of existing community programmes.
The empirical study enabled the researcher to draw certain conclusions. Although certain
misconceptions were evident, the respondents understood the term developmental social
work, community and community work, as well as the systems involved in the community
work process and the practice models. The most utilised social work method was
casework. The respondents who utilised community work made use of a community work
process. Most of the respondents utilised the social community education model in the
military. Most of the respondents indicated that guidelines for community work within the
SANDF would be helpful. Approximately thirty percent of the respondents experienced
problems while making use of community work as a social work method of intervention. A number of recommendations stem from the findings and conclusions. The social workers
knowledge with regard to community work needs to be updated. Practical opportunities
need to be provided to afford the social worker the opportunity to implement the newly
acquired knowledge. Community work guidelines need to be determined within the
SANDF, and need to be formulated into a policy document. Specific community work
posts, which include all disciplines, need to be created within the SANDF. Post-graduates
studies should be undertaken by social workers before being promoted into managerial
positions.
Tweedens is

The facilitation of social integration on community level : a social work perspectivePretorius, Mornay Charl 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M Social Work)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / Some digitised pages may appear illegible due to the condition of the original hard copy. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Currently much attention is given in South African welfare legislation and in recent local and
intemationalliterature and research to the process of social integration and the formation of social
capital as one of the ideational outcomes of a social development approach, and therefore also a
key practice element of developmental social work. Very little research have been undertaken to
document the changes in social work practice brought about by the transition to a social
development approach in South Africa. The purpose of this study is to formulate social work
practice guidelines on the facilitation of social integration on community level. It therefore
constitutes an attempt to illuminate how social workers could contribute to the national thrust
toward the social integration of communities and provide valuable guidelines to social workers
on the practical realization of this key element of developmental social work.
In order to gain new insight and to clarify central concepts relating to this relatively unfamiliar
research area, an exploratory research design was utilised. The population for the study consisted
of practising social workers in welfare agencies subsidised by the Department of Social Services
in the Cape Metropolitan area. From the population a sample was drawn utilising sampling
strategies from both the probability and non-probability sampling procedures. The study was both
qualitative and quantitative in nature and in-dept interviews were chosen as the method of datacollection.
The interview schedule was compiled from the literature survey. In this survey the relation
between the social development approach to welfare and social integration was explained, and
some of the core focus areas for the social integration of South African communities were
identified. Furthermore a discussion was given on community intervention strategies as a core
method of social work as well as its practice implications for developmental social work. From
this literature survey structured and unstructured questions were formulated and compiled in an
interview schedule. This measurement instrument was utilised to explore how social workers can
facilitate the social integration of communities through community intervention strategies. From
the analysis ofthe results of the empirical study, social work practice guidelines on the facilitation
of social integration on community level were formulated.
onderhoude is gebruik as metode van data-versameling.
ondersoek opgestel is.
Verder is
gemeenskapsvlak is geformuleer.

'The Factory in a Garden' : corporate recreational landscapes in England and the United States, 1880-1939Chance, Helena M. F. January 2010 (has links)
From the 1880s, a new type of designed green space appeared in the industrial landscape in England and the USA - the factory pleasure garden or park. At the same time, industrialists began to enhance their office and factory buildings with landscaping and planting, and some opened allotment gardens for the children of factory workers. The making of gardens and parks around or near office and factory buildings, designed by professionals, was driven by belief in the value of gardens and parks to recruitment and retention of staff, to industrial welfare, and to advertising, corporate identity and public relations. The thesis will show how industrialists appropriated the historical, cultural and metaphorical meanings of gardens in a bid to redefine industry as progressive and responsible and to shift the image of factory labour from unhealthy and exploitative to healthy, caring, respectable and sociable. The thesis will argue that companies employed landscape professionals to contribute to a positive image of industry and industrial development in the suburban or rural landscape, and to harmonise industry and nature. It will show how the factory gardens and parks supported numerous and varied opportunities for outdoor recreation that in some districts would not have been so readily accessible to working people, particularly to women and young people. The thesis will show how companies exploited the social and cultural capital of gardens and recreation space through photography, illustration and film for promotional purposes. It will suggest that although the sporting and other outdoor recreational opportunities at factories were likely to be beneficial to many, the greater value to companies of factory pleasure gardens was in advertising and public relations. The thesis will build on existing research that highlights the valuable contribution of industry to sports and recreation provision in this period. It will also suggest that industry had more influence on gardens and gardening than is currently understood.

Exploring the employee wellness practices of SMMEs in the Gauteng regionVan Der Linde, Bernadine Anine 11 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Sepedi / Small businesses flourish when employees are happy, healthy and productive. This makes employees an important asset of a small business because its success depends on the performance of its employees. Employee wellness practices in small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) often focus on the physical aspects of wellbeing, despite employees wanting management to focus on their emotional needs. In view of the fact that employers do not realise that employee wellness significantly improves morale and increases retention rates, this research sought to explore the employee wellness experiences of managers and employees in SMMEs to develop an understanding of the need for employee wellness practices in these organisations. Accordingly, a qualitative study was conducted among 17 employees and four managers at three diverse industries operating in the Gauteng region of South Africa. The data were collected by means of focus groups interviews with employees and individual interviews with managers who work in SMMEs that employ less than 50 employees. The results indicated that employees consider employee wellness in terms of how well organisations treat them and take care of them. The findings demonstrated that employees depend on good working relationships to be happy and engaged in the workplace. Although management cited various financial and human resource constraints that limit employee wellness practices, the employees identified various activities and practices that were not dependent on financial resources for implementation. The results also showed there was insufficient evidence to support the notion that there is a link between unhealthy workplace conditions and higher absenteeism and staff turnover rates. The findings highlighted that employees need social interaction in order to feel valued and cared for and that this factor often outweighs the negative feelings employees have of working in unhealthy environments. Thus, employees were willing to work in unhealthy conditions as long as they felt valued by top management. The findings of the study contribute to the knowledge in the literature on employee wellness practices in SMMEs because limited studies have been conducted to demonstrate the impact of workplace conditions on employee wellness. / Dikgwebo tse nyane di tswella ka bokgabane ha basebetsi ba thabile, ba phetse hantle ebile ba sebelletsa ho beha ditholoana. Employee substance abuse in the SAPS : strengthening the collaborative working relationship between first line managers and police social workers by evaluating the Sober Workplace Programme for ManagersVan Rensburg, Maria Magrietha Janse 10 1900 (has links)
An intoxicated police employee can never keep the community safe and secure, as
mandated by law enforcement prescripts. However, limited attention is given to
harmful or hazardous substance abuse or the binge drinking habits of police
employees. Substance abuse being a ‘culture’ in law enforcement agencies and the
maintenance of the blue wall of silence as a protective measure necessitates
scientific research to explore how a collaborative working relationship between the
occupational social worker and especially First Line Managers (FLMs) can
contribute to addressing this phenomenon in a timeous manner.
The researcher applied a quantitative research approach and utilised a switching
replication quasi-experimental design to determine whether the collaborative
working relationship between South African Police Service (SAPS) FLMs and Police
Social Workers (PSWs) can be strengthened to the extent that they effectively and
efficiently deal with the harmful or hazardous substance abuse or binge drinking
habits of SAPS employees by exposing the FLMs to a social work intervention,
namely the Sober Workplace Programme for Managers. The pre-, mid-, and posttest measurements are based on knowledge, attitude, and behaviour constructs to
determine if the two hypotheses formulated were supported. The study, however,
did not indicate that the Sober Workplace Programme for Managers strengthens the
collaborative working relationship between the FLMs and PSWs to address the

Generational relationships and differences in work-life balance and subjective well-being in a South African sampleVan der Linde, El-Karien 11 1900 (has links)
This study examined the work-life balance (WLB) and subjective well-being (SWB) of Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y in the current world of work. The instruments used in this study for data collection was Work-life Balance Scale, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, and the Work Engagement Questionnaire. The research was conducted from the perspective of a positive psychological paradigm and investigated the interrelationship dynamics between the constructs of generations and work-life balance and work-life balance and subjective well-being, as well as the differences between the levels of work-life balance and subjective well-being across generations in a South African sample.
This study calculated Exploratory Factor Analyses (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) to examine the psychometric structure of a proposed SWB construct and to test the hypothesis that SWB is a latent variable comprising of Happiness, Optimism, Self-Esteem, and Engagement. Based on the results of the two EFA and CFA models, there is enough statistical evidence to accept this hypothesis. Correlational analysis and structural equation modelling revealed the relationships between work-life balance and subjective well-being. Regression analysis and tests for significant differences identified the differences in work-life balance and subjective well-being levels across the generations. The results revealed that there were some statistically significant differences between generations. For Baby Boomers and Generation X work-life balance was influenced by SWB factors, whilst Generation Y were mostly influenced by biographical variables. The results showed that hours worked, and hours paid were predictors of work interfering with personal life (WIPL) for both Generation X and Generation Y. Self-esteem was a significant predictor for the Baby Boomers. With regards to personal life interfering with work (PLIW) hours worked and happiness were found to be predictors for Generation X, whereas hours paid was a negative predictor for Generation Y. Furthermore, hours worked, happiness and engagement were found to predict work and personal life enhancement (WPLE) for Generation X. An overall difference was noted for happiness across the generations, with Generation Y employees having significantly lower levels of happiness than Generation X, whilst no significant difference was noted between Generation X and Baby Boomers. The current study linked the emerging constructs of positive psychology in general by investigating the relationships and differences between generations, WLB and SWB. The results could be used as a framework for IOP.The research makes a contribution to the field of Industrial and Organisational Psychology on three levels, namely, on a theoretical, an empirical and a practical level. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D.
