Development of a hierarchical fuzzy model for the evaluation of inherent safety

Inherent safety has been recognized as a design approach useful to remove or reduce hazards at the source instead of controlling them with add-on protective barriers. However, inherent safety is based on qualitative principles that cannot easily be evaluated and analyzed, and this is one of the major difficulties for the systematic application and quantification of inherent safety in plant design. The present research introduces the use of fuzzy logic for the measurement of inherent safety by proposing a hierarchical fuzzy model. This dissertation establishes a novel conceptual framework for the analysis of inherent safety and proposes a methodology that addresses several of the limitations of the methodologies available for current inherent safety analysis. This research proposes a methodology based on a hierarchical fuzzy model that analyzes the interaction of variables relevant for inherent safety and process safety in general. The use of fuzzy logic is helpful for modeling uncertainty and subjectivities implied in evaluation of certain variables and it is helpful for combining quantitative data with qualitative information. Fuzzy logic offers the advantage of being able to model numerical and heuristic expert knowledge by using fuzzy IF-THEN rules. Safety is traditionally considered a subjective issue because of the high uncertainty associated with its significant descriptors and parameters; however, this research recognizes that rather than subjective, "safety" is a vague problem. Vagueness derives from the fact that it is not possible to define sharp boundaries between safe and unsafe states; therefore the problem is a "matter of degree". The proposed method is computer-based and process simulator-oriented in order to reduce the time and expertise required for the analysis. It is expected that in the future, by linking the present approach to a process simulator, process engineers can develop safety analysis during the early stages of the design in a rapid and systematic way. Another important aspect of inherent safety, rarely addressed, is transportation of chemical substances; this dissertation includes the analysis of transportation hazard by truck using a fuzzy logic-based approach.

In order to speed up the organizational simplification, promote government administrative efficiency, expand the public infrastructure and privatize the publicly-owned enterprises, the Executive Yuan has actively initiated every reward measures to bring in fund, management and service from private sector. To pursue the best benefit for the people, the private business and government itself, the Executive Yuan has announced not to running the business which the private sector can do better than the public. Certainly this reforms influence administrative operations and personnel structure of the government directly, and have great impacts on the personnel working environment, satisfaction and morale inside the government organization, therefore we should put more concerns on this subject. In this thesis, we analyze the interactions among personnel working environment, satisfaction and morale with the cognition and support of privatization by using questionnaire and statistics technique. By so doing, we can reach twice the result with half the effort to help understanding the clear direction of the privatization of publicly-owned enterprises. This research use Kaohsiung municipal swimming pool as a case study to find out connections between the inherent psychology factors of employees and the privatization process. The empirical results will be useful for government as an administrative reference backward to execute the privatization policy.

Investigation of Current Sensing Using Inherent Resistance

A novel method of current sensing using resistance of power delivery path is introduced as a mean to measure static or dynamic load current in high-power system-on-chips, where conventional methods deemed inadequate. It is named ???IRS??? here, and it stands for Inherent Resistance Current Sensing. To explain its application and to provide motivation beyond this work, pros and cons of conventional techniques are reviewed with a look at previous works done in this area. It is followed with review of discreet implementation of the sensor (IRS) in chapter three. The measurements results collected using the discrete circuits are included with an in-depth analysis of the results and compensation techniques. It offers insight to effectiveness of the solution and its potential, while highlighting shortcomings and limitation of discrete implementation. This would set the tone to design integrated version of the sensor. In order to select amplifier architecture, a rundown of common methods to construct the instrumentation amplifier is discussed in chapter 4, primarily based on the latest work already done in this field per cited references. This is to help readers to get an overall view of the challenges and techniques to overcome them. Finally, the architecture for the integrated version of the sensor (IRS) is presented, with a proof of concept design. The design is targeted for low voltage VLSI systems to allow integration within large SoCs such as GPUs and CPUs. The primary block, the instrumentation amplifier, is constructed using rail-to-rail current conveyers and simulated using TSMC 32nm process node. The simulation results are analyzed and observations are provided.

Systematic generation of engineering line diagrams

This thesis describes research into a methodology for the systematic development of engineering line diagrams (ELOs) from process tlowsheets with a particular emphasis on safety, health and environmental (SHE) and operability issues. The current approach to the consideration of safety in design is largely reactive, relying on design reviews such as the HAZOP. If design safety is to be improved, then a comprehensive system, incorporating both proactive and reactive methods, must be adopted. The facility to develop proactive safety systems relies upon the presence of a systematic design procedure. Since design at this stage seems generally to be rather haphazard, there is a need to introduce structure to the design task before any progress can be made in the improvement of safety. Introducing structure to the design task not only provides a framework for the incorporation of SHE and operability issues, but should also improve the effectiveness of the overall design and the efficiency with which it is completed. More specifically, fewer good design opportunities should be lost due to poor information handling and thc amount of rework arising from misunderstandings between different disciplines should be minimised. In addition, learning how to perform the design task should become easier for new recruits. Relevant work in the fields of process design, process safety, engineering drawings and ELO development is discussed. An analysis of perceptions of the design task within industry is presented. The generation of a systematic method by iterative case study work with designers is described. The structural features of this method are explained. Some examples of the application of the method are given and the results of a trial within industry are discussed. This research has shown that there is no existing work which captures the logic for the order in which decisions for developing a first ELO are made. Neither is there a complete analysis of the activities and issues contributing to ELO development. A novel method for the systematic generation of ELOs has been produced and used as a framework for the incorporation of SHE and operability issues into design. Trials of the method within industry have shown it to be successful.

Hinduism : the double edged sword of environmentalism / Kirshni Naidoo

The purpose of the study was to draw parallels between the Hindu religious teachings and environmental sustainability. A literature review on Hindu teachings on the environment as well as the practical application thereof as experienced or practiced by religious leaders and devotees were conducted. This was similar to the study that was conducted at the Bhaktivedanta Manor Temple near Watford in England at a Janmashtami festival in 2007 (Chauhan et al., 2009).The intention of the 2007 campaign was to raise spiritual self-consciousness by linking the concept of karma to environmental degradation, i.e. the concept of every action has a reaction. It also prompted the devotees to realise that there were practical steps that could be taken to alleviate the environmental crises by reducing one‟s ecological footprint. Literature on similar themes and hypotheses were referenced in the mini-dissertation, exposing the double-edged sword practices of Hinduism, where some religious practices have a harmful impact on the environment, which is contradictory to the teachings themselves. A survey was conducted at the Benoni Temple in Eastern Gauteng in South Africa where there is a strong Hindu community. The study was specifically aimed at two target audiences: Hindu religious leaders and Hindu devotees. The purpose was to establish both the religious leaders‟ and devotees‟ viewpoints regarding the correlation between Hindu religious teachings and lifestyles. The outcome was synonymous that there is a need for better communication and more environmental awareness from the Hindu religious teachings. Limitations of the study: Bearing in mind the vastness of the topic the study has been limited to Hinduism for the Masters in Environmental Management qualification and lays the foundation for expansion of further studies.
