Machine Learning Approach on Evaluating Predictive Factors of Fall-Related Injuries

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, falls account for 95% of all hip fractures in Canada; 20% of fall-related injury cases end in death. This thesis evaluates the predictive power of many variables to predict fall-related injuries. The dataset chosen was CCHS which is high dimensional and diverse. The use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and random forest was employed to determine the highest priority risk factors to include in the predictive model. The results show that it is possible to predict fall-related injuries with a sensitivity of 80% or higher using four predictors (frequency of consultations with medical doctor, food and vegetable consumption, height and monthly physical activity level of over 15 minutes). Alternatively, the same sensitivity can be reached using age, frequency of walking for exercise per 3 months, alcohol consumption and personal income. None of the predictive models reached an accuracy of 70% or higher. Further work in studying nutritional diets that offer protection from incurring a fall related injury are also recommended. Since the predictors are behavioral determinants of health and have a high sensitivity but a low accuracy, population health interventions are recommended rather than individual-level interventions. Suggestions to improve accuracy of built models are also proposed. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Experimental production of tendon sheaths: An experimental study, using venous grafts in Cercopithecus aethiops (Blue vervet monkey)

An attempt to reproduce tendon sheaths using autologous venous grafts has been undertaken in Cercopithecus aethiops (Blue Vervet Monkey). Ten venous grafts were tested. Five were placed around sutured tendons in paratenon, and the remainder around tendons in sheath formation. In no instance did synovial-like sheaths form. In the latter series, the experiment was controlled, and the results obtained expressed in terms of function. The functional results of the venous ensheathed tendons were worse than those of the controlled tendons.The controlled experiment was confined to the digital sheath, an area notoriously liable to adhesion formation, and the one which offered the most critical test of operative technique.A method for the evaluation of function, following the repair of divided tendons in the experimental animal has been presented. Voluntary movement of joints in the experimental animal was obviously impossible, but the method employed in this experiment, namely, the electrical stimulation of muscles, and the photographic recording of the range of joint movement, presented no disadvantages.The experimental animal used in this study was ideal, in that anatomical studies of the hand of this species, revealed features both structurally and functionally comparable to those in man.The anatomical and physiological aspects of tendon action, the mechanics of tendon gliding, and the healing processes in divided tendons have been studied.The fate of human autologous venous grafts has been investigated.A review of previous methods employed to prevent peritendinous adhesions has been presented.

Design of a Robotic Equine Forelimb for Testing Load-Bearing Rehabilitative Devices

Because horses are animals of flight, bone fractures in the horses' limbs are quite common. When foals fracture a bone in their leg, the healthy leg is often compromised. During convalescence, the animal tends to overstress the healthy leg in an attempt to relieve the stress on the injured leg. This results in angular limb deformities, lax tendons, laminitis, and similar problems. These problems could possibly be avoided through a load-bearing device that would relieve the additional weight from the foal's limbs. In order to allow for in-vitro testing of such a load-bearing device, this thesis describes the design, analysis, and procedure of construction of a robotic replica of a foal's limb. In particular, the robotic replica has been designed to replicate all of the anticipated motion of a foal's limb, including walking, shifting weight from one leg to the other, and kicking, for example, using gait-analysis data from an actual horse's gait. From such data, the robotic replica has been designed in IDEAS and analyzed using multibody dynamics simulations code and the finite-element-analysis software ANSYS. To evaluate the function of the robotic replica, a control system was developed to reproduce observed gait characteristics. Comparison of the computer-simulated gait with the observed gait showed that a linear feedback control algorithm resulted in a response adequate for the proposed function. The proposed robotic replica has the potential for aiding in the development of several other bioassistive devices. With minor modifications, the robotic replica could be used to test a device design to transfer load from the cannon bone to the ground for an animal inflicted with laminitis (founder). An investigation of team lifting using psychophysical methods

Lifting is one of the major causes of back injury in the workplace. Often, workers are told to ask for the help of another worker when the load is too great to be lifted alone, yet the effects of these team lifts have not been researched until recently. This experiment investigated some of the variables which may affect the results of team lifting tasks. The psychophysical methodology has been used for almost 30 years in trying to determine the maximum acceptable weight of lift for industrial workers. Though two previous studies of team lifting used the psychophysical approach, no effort was made to identify and control variables which may affect team tasks. This experiment manipulated two variables, box type (double or single) and isolation condition (curtains open or closed) to see whether these would produce the psychosocial effects of social loafing and social facilitation. Three male and three female two-person teams performed team lifts, using psychophysical methodology, under all four conditions. The only significant effect found was for gender. Female teams lifted 58.8% of the mass the male teams lifted. Male teams lifted 92.5% and female teams 87.8% of the sum of their individual lifts. This is in close agreement with other studies of team lifting. A regression model was developed in order to predict the amount of weight a team can lift, with an R<sub>2</sub> of 0.962. Yes / This article discusses the current evidence for the short- and long-term effects of concussion in sport and how occurrences of concussion should be managed. The article also considers the potential role of medical imaging in terms of assessing both acute and chronic head injuries. Greater awareness of when medical imaging could be used will aid the practitioner's understanding of its potential contribution while still maintaining the fundamental importance of clinical judgement.
