Mazza, Caterina 20 January 2015 (has links)
The overall aim of my research is to investigate whether and, if so, how the use of intertextual tropes like parody and pastiche have been a determining factor in the “translation” of the modern canon in contemporary Japanese literature. In order to investigate these aspects, I have explored as a case study three works completely different in terms of style and themes, but that share a common hypotext: in fact, I analyse in this research the parodies of Yukiguni, the worldwide renowned masterpiece of Kawabata Yasunari, realized by Ogino Anna, Shimizu Yoshinori and Inoue Hisashi (respectively in Watashi no aidokusho 『私の愛毒書』, 1991; Ese monogatari 『江勢物語』, 1991; Kirikirijin, 『吉里吉里人』, 1981).Through a comparative examination of the chosen texts, but also considering the critical discourse on the “canonization” of the works of Kawabata and the non-negligible role of their translations for the western audience, I try to demonstrate the strategic importance of intertextual practices in contemporary Japanese literary scene: the exploration of the use of parody and pastiche in postmodern Japanese context highlight the challenging perspective of a literature that reflect on itself by reflecting itself.

This thesis has two main objetives: the first, to discuss the differences of the two lines of work in what concerns their styles and positions in the literary field; the second, to validate the study of a literature denied by the academy. Studies about pulp fiction in Brazilian Universities are rare and full of contradictions: escapism? Sensationalism? Mass Literature? “This is not literature”? Entertainment whithout sofistication? So, this is a peculiar and complex thind, pulp fiction. My argument is built against a division between “high” and “low” culture, angainst exclusivism, the main questions raised are: what is the pathos of the pulp fiction reading? What is the post-modern pulp? Is it possible to a pulp work to be studied in the academy and remain pulp? Last but not least: this thesis is written as pulp story, out of the clichés and the insolent poetry of the pulp. Pulp me, fiction. That’s the spirit.

Stochastic Modelling of Financial Processes with Memory and Semi-Heavy Tails

Pesee, Chatchai January 2005 (has links)
This PhD thesis aims to study financial processes which have semi-heavy-tailed marginal distributions and may exhibit memory. The traditional Black-Scholes model is expanded to incorporate memory via an integral operator, resulting in a class of market models which still preserve the completeness and arbitragefree conditions needed for replication of contingent claims. This approach is used to estimate the implied volatility of the resulting model. The first part of the thesis investigates the semi-heavy-tailed behaviour of financial processes. We treat these processes as continuous-time random walks characterised by a transition probability density governed by a fractional Riesz- Bessel equation. This equation extends the Feller fractional heat equation which generates a-stable processes. These latter processes have heavy tails, while those processes generated by the fractional Riesz-Bessel equation have semi-heavy tails, which are more suitable to model financial data. We propose a quasi-likelihood method to estimate the parameters of the fractional Riesz- Bessel equation based on the empirical characteristic function. The second part considers a dynamic model of complete financial markets in which the prices of European calls and puts are given by the Black-Scholes formula. The model has memory and can distinguish between historical volatility and implied volatility. A new method is then provided to estimate the implied volatility from the model. The third part of the thesis considers the problem of classification of financial markets using high-frequency data. The classification is based on the measure representation of high-frequency data, which is then modelled as a recurrent iterated function system. The new methodology developed is applied to some stock prices, stock indices, foreign exchange rates and other financial time series of some major markets. In particular, the models and techniques are used to analyse the SET index, the SET50 index and the MAI index of the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
