Continuity and Change: Curriculum and Instruction in the World History ClassroomShelburne, Suzanne P. 17 May 2022 (has links)
This dissertation explores curriculum and instruction in the world history classroom through two manuscripts. These manuscripts describe the effects of educational policy and environmental contexts on the work of world history teachers. The first study analyzes the world history curriculum, and the second study looks at how curriculum was enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, these studies make visible trends of continuity and change in the world history curriculum and teacher decision-making.
The first manuscript is a qualitative analysis of the representation of women and gender in Virginia's world history curriculum. This study examines the representation of women and gender in the curriculum by analyzing curricular choices and discourse within the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) and the Curriculum Frameworks. Through content analysis and critical discourse analysis, the study identifies a lack of inclusivity in the world history curriculum and addresses how language reproduces gender stereotypes and negates the contributions of women in comparison to their male counterparts. This study is important for two reasons. First, it adds to the literature on teaching world history which is a lesser researched content area in social studies. Second, it examines how curriculum can influence inclusivity and representation in the historical narrative. This study was recently published in the Iowa Journal for the Social Studies.
The second manuscript is a qualitative case study that explores the educational and environmental contexts created by the COVID-19 pandemic and how these contexts affected the curricular-instructional decisions and pedagogical practices of four world history teachers. Initially, I planned to study the effects of teacher knowledge, specifically content knowledge, on the teacher-curriculum relationship. However, the focus shifted to teacher-decision making during the pandemic. This research is vital and useful because it addresses how teachers tried to continue as normal during uncertain times. Data collection included classroom observations, participant interviews, and analysis of instructional materials. Findings reveal that teachers relied on the continuity of the curriculum while changing methods of instructional delivery, adapting classroom assessment practices, and modifying existing assignments. The most promising finding of the study reveals that teachers employed formative assessments to check for understanding and the presence of remote students. Teacher decisions show evidence of pedagogical content knowledge, knowledge of students, and knowledge of contexts. The research shows that teachers made curricular-instructional decisions in reaction to pandemic educational contexts, but these choices often aligned with the research on effective and wise practice in areas like classroom assessment. / Doctor of Philosophy / As a former world history teacher and current teacher educator, I am interested in making the work of classroom teachers visible. In Virginia, world history educators are expected to teach the standardized world history curriculum. I recognized that the world history curriculum was dominated by men but did little to address the issue until I had the opportunity to develop and teach a women's studies course at Christiansburg High School. My knowledge of different types of curricula and curriculum as educational policy grew during my doctoral program. The first study grew out of a class assignment for feminist research methods. I found that men vastly outnumber women, but more importantly, that the wording of the curriculum reproduces gender stereotypes by describing the achievements of women as inferior to those of men. This study shows that the Virginia world history curriculum remained relatively consistent from 2008 to 2015 and the most significant changes reduced inclusivity instead of expanding the curriculum. This study is important because it addresses how women continue to be marginalized and underrepresented in the world history curriculum.
The COVID-19 pandemic introduced students and teachers to a series of new and shifting educational and environmental contexts. I originally planned to study how world history teachers navigated the teacher-curriculum relationship, designed their planned curriculum, and then analyze the enacted curriculum or what occurred in the actual classroom. However, it was impossible to escape the educational contexts resulting from the pandemic when conducting my study. Therefore, the second study evolved to focus on the effects of pandemic educational and environmental contexts on the instructional decisions and classroom practices of world history teachers. I discovered that despite their lack of experience with remote instruction, teachers made curricular-instructional decisions that were illustrative of effective and wise practice.

A qualitative study of secondary mathematics teachers' questioning, responses, and perceived influencesMcAninch, Melissa Joan 01 May 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine secondary mathematics teachers' questioning, responses, and perceived influences upon their instructional decisions regarding questioning and response to students' ideas. This study also compared the questioning practices, responses, and influences of beginning teachers to more experienced teachers. Previous studies on teacher quality in mathematics education have focused on general characteristics of mathematics teachers' instructional practice including a broad range of instructional strategies. Little is known about mathematics teachers' questioning practices and responses to students' ideas that research has repeatedly reported are critical to student mathematics learning in secondary classrooms. Furthermore, it is not clear how different novice teachers are in questioning and responding to students from experienced teachers. This understanding can provide significant insights into teacher education programs for mathematics teachers. With those issues in mind, this study was designed to answer the following questions: (1) What similarities and differences exist in questioning patterns between novice and experienced teachers when guiding a classroom mathematical discussion? (2) What similarities and differences exist in responses to students during pivotal teaching moments between novice and experienced teachers when guiding a classroom mathematical discussion? (3) What perceived factors impact the responses teachers give to students' ideas, and how are these factors of influence different among novice and experienced teachers?
This study employed a multiple case study research design to compare the questioning practices and responses of three beginning teachers and three experienced teachers. Multiple sources of data were collected, including two interviews (i.e., initial interview and follow-up interview) for each teacher, five days of classroom video footage for each teacher, and field notes by the researcher for each interview and observation. The researcher conducted initial interviews with each teacher to gain a general sense of the teacher's philosophy and use of questions in guiding classroom discussion. Five instructional days of observation followed the initial interview, and then the researcher conducted a follow-up interview by use of video-stimulated response. All interviews were transcribed verbatim for analysis. The data was analyzed mainly using the constant comparative method to identify regularities and patterns emerging from the data. Results showed differences between beginning and experienced teachers in the frequency and variety of questions asked. Although all teachers showed the largest number of questions in the Socratic questioning category, differences were prominent in the semantic tapestry and framing categories. Results regarding teacher responses to pivotal teaching moments showed that four teachers favored a procedural emphasis in their responses to students, and two teachers used responses to direct students to make clear connections within or outside of mathematics. Perceived influences identified include: (1) reflection on experience and mathematical knowledge for teaching, (2) time, and (3) relationship with students, teachers, and parents, and knowledge of student background.
Practicing teachers can expand the types of questions they use in the classroom, making particular efforts to include those areas that this study showed to be most lacking: semantic tapestry questions that help students build a coherent mental framework related to a mathematical concept, and framing questions that help frame a problem and structure the discussion that follows. The comparison between beginning and experienced teachers also shed light on important practices for teacher education. The beginning teacher participants from this study had no trouble noticing pivotal teaching moments in their lessons but were less developed in their responses to them. Recommendations for mathematics teacher education programs are to provide opportunities to develop content, pedagogical knowledge including specific instruction on questioning strategies, and also to provide parallel field experiences where pre-service teachers can apply the knowledge and skill they are learning.

Accomplished Teachers' Instructional Decisions About ShakespeareParris, Sheri Rene’ 05 1900 (has links)
Teachers' decisions are a powerful influence on student learning and it is important to fully document accomplished teachers' instructional decisions, as well as to investigate possible influences on those decisions. Shakespearean dramas are central to high school curricula across the U.S. and pose particular instructional challenges, therefore teachers' decisions about teaching these texts are of particular interest. There is limited empirical research, however, about these instructional decisions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to describe how four accomplished high school English teachers working on a single campus make instructional decisions about teaching a Shakespearean play. Specifically, research questions addressed teachers' decisions regarding the teaching of a Shakespearean play and various influences on those decisions (self-reports and inferences from the data). Case study methodology was used, including an inductive analysis of individual teacher interviews, classroom observations, focus group, instructional artifacts, and researcher's journal. The findings revealed that instructional activities described by these teachers addressed support for meaning-making during four stages of reading instruction: (a) before, during, and after; (b) before; (c) during; and (d) after. Comparison of these cases suggests that, although each teacher brings personal preferences and unique background knowledge to her instructional decisions, all make decisions to promote student engagement and student construction of meaning. Regarding influences on these teachers' decisions about teaching the Shakespearean play, four categories were identified: (a) response to students; (b) aspects of the text; (c) response to contextual constraints and supports; and (d) personal preferences and background experiences. Individual teacher differences are clearly a strong influence, even among this group of colleagues on the same campus. Also, two influences not reported explicitly by the teachers suggest a complex integration of these influences. One is their intuitive thinking, which deserves a closer investigation in future research. The other proposes that each teacher's decisions are influenced by her instructional interaction working model (IIWM), a conceptual framework that shapes each teacher's conversational patterns, non-verbal behaviors, and other interactional patterns. Further research should explore the use of such a model to describe and explain the complexity of teachers' decisions, particularly when teaching complex, challenging tasks and texts.
