The Role of Plant Trait Variation in Community Assembly and Plant Diversity at Local to Continental Scales

The trait based approach has been proposed as a way to reconcile community ecology. Despite recent advances in trait based ecology, such as the development of global trait databases and standardized methodology for trait collections, it remains unclear to what degree traits vary across individuals, species, and communities. In addition, the drivers of trait variation may shed light on the underlying processes that maintain species diversity and community assembly at local to continental scales yet these have been poorly studied. In this study, I examine both the magnitude of trait variation as well as the patterns of trait variation at local to continental scales in order to understand the drivers of diversity patterns across environmental gradients. First, I quantified the magnitude of trait variation at local scales in a dry tropical forest and determined that intraspecific variation is not negligible and can be quite large for compound-leaved species. However, I showed that the sample sizes necessary for quantifying trait variation are tractable and should encourage the adoption of trait variation in trait based ecology. Second, I tested whether climatic variables are predominantly responsible for observed trait variation across dry tropical forests in the Americas. I showed that climatic variability, specifically variability in precipitation, explained a large degree of observed trait variation across dry tropical forests and may provide a unique approach for classifying dry tropical forests based on their inherent degree of climatic seasonality. Third, I quantified patterns of trait variation at continental scales across elevational gradients at high to low latitudes. I showed that climatic variables largely drive patterns of trait variation at high latitudes while biotic factors largely drive patterns of trait variation at low, tropical latitudes. This finding has implications for understanding large-scale patterns of species diversity across elevational and latitudinal gradients. Finally, I apply trait variation to life history theory by quantifying variation in two life history traits (growth and reproduction) in a tropical tree species using a legacy dataset. I showed that variation in these two life history traits is due to both resource availability and allometric related effects on both traits. In sum, this study advances our understanding of the magnitude and underlying drivers of trait variation at local to continental scales.

Understanding variation in key functional traits across gradients in high diversity systems and the ecology of community changes along gradients in these systems is crucial in light of conservation and climate change. We examined inter- and intraspecific variation in leaf mass per area (LMA) of sun and shade leaves along a 3330-m elevation gradient in Peru, and in sun leaves across a forest-savanna vegetation gradient in Brazil. We also compared LMA variance ratios (T-statistics metrics) to null models to explore internal (i.e., abiotic) and environmental filtering on community structure along the gradients. Community- weighted LMA increased with decreasing forest cover in Brazil, likely due to increased light availability and water stress, and increased with elevation in Peru, consistent with the leaf economic spectrum strategy expected in colder, less productive environments. A very high species turnover was observed along both environmental gradients, and consequently, the first source of variation in LMA was species turnover. Variation in LMA at the genus or family levels was greater in Peru than in Brazil. Using dominant trees to examine possible filters on community assembly, we found that in Brazil, internal filtering was strongest in the forest, while environmental filtering was observed in the dry savanna. In Peru, internal filtering was observed along 80% of the gradient, perhaps due to variation in taxa or interspecific competition. Environmental filtering was observed at cloud zone edges and in lowlands, possibly due to water and nutrient availability, respectively. These results related to variation in LMA indicate that biodiversity in species rich tropical assemblages may be structured by differential niche-based processes. In the future, specific mechanisms generating these patterns of variation in leaf functional traits across tropical environmental gradients should be explored.

Chez les diatomées du genre Pseudo-nitzschia, certaines espèces produisent une neurotoxine, l’acide domoïque responsable chez l’homme d’intoxications amnésiantes suite à la consommation de mollusques contaminés. En Baie de Seine, la variabilité interannuelle de ces efflorescences toxiques, qui provoquent certaines années des fermetures de zones de pêche à la coquille Saint-Jacques, est liée à des changements de diversité spécifique au sein des communautés de Pseudo-nitzschia. Cette thèse avait pour objectif de caractériser la diversité écophysiologique au sein du genre Pseudo-nitzschia afin de mieux comprendre les facteurs qui influencent les différences de toxicité et de phénologies des efflorescences des principales espèces de Pseudo-nitzschia de Baie de Seine. Différents paramètres physiologiques, tels que la croissance, la production d’acide domoïque, les quotas élémentaires, les paramètres photosynthétiques, ainsi que les paramètres de cinétiques d’absorption du nitrate, du silicate et du phosphate, ont été étudiés chez quatre espèces : P. australis, P. pungens, P. fraudulenta et P. delicatissima. De plus, la variabilité intraspécifique a été évalué en étudiant de nombreuses souches par espèce et en estimant l’influence des variations de la taille cellulaire liées au cycle de vie de Pseudo-nitzschia sur les paramètres physiologiques. Les résultats montrent une importante diversité intraspécifique de la physiologie des quatre espèces, en partie liée à la taille cellulaire et parfois au cycle de vie. La connaissance de cette diversité intraspécifique a permis de caractériser différents traits physiologiques pour chaque espèce. Les résultats apportent des éléments de compréhension sur les conditions physiologiques favorables à la production d’acide domoïque et le rôle des éléments nutritifs dans le déterminisme des efflorescences des espèces de Pseudo-nitzschia. / In the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia, some species produce a neurotoxin called domoic acid responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans following the consumption of contaminated molluscs. In the Bay of Seine (English Channel), the variability of bloom toxicity is linked to differences in the Pseudo-nitzschia species diversity. The aim of this thesis was to characterize the ecophysiological diversity within the genus Pseudo-nitzschia in order to better understand the physiological parameters influencing differences in toxicity and bloom phenology among the main Pseudo-nitzschia species of the Bay of Seine. Growth, domoic acid production, elemental intracellular quotas, photosynthetic parameters and kinetic parameters for nitrate, phosphate, and silicic acid uptake were studied in four Pseudo-nitzschia species: P. australis, P. pungens, P. fraudulenta et P. delicatissima. The intraspecific variability was characterized with a multi-strain approach and also considering the effect of cell size on the studied physiological parameters. The results highlight the importance of the intraspecific variability in the physiology of the four species, in part due to cell size reduction linked to Pseudo-nitzschia life cycle. Delineate the intraspecific diversity allowed to characterize different physiological traits for each species. This work brings new information on the physiological conditions favorable to domoic acid production and on the role of nutrients in controlling Pseudo-nitzschia species diversity during blooms.

Les risques de sécheresse sévère augmentent sous l’effet du changement climatique. Mieux comprendre les stratégies adaptatives des plantes au stress hydrique est ainsi l’un des défis majeurs de la recherche écologique et agronomique. Cette thèse explore la survie à la sécheresse d’une graminée herbacée pérenne (Dactylis glomerata L.) en étudiant la variabilité intraspécifique des traits aériens et souterrains d’une quinzaine de populations natives et cultivées issues d’un gradient latitudinal allant de la Scandinavie au Maroc. Une caractérisation des populations en conditions optimales sur une année a montré une coordination phénologique des traits aériens en relation avec les limitations saisonnières de croissances liées à l’origine des populations. Le rythme de croissance au printemps et à l’automne ne discrimine pas les origines, alors que la dormance estivale des populations méditerranéennes s’oppose à la dormance hivernale des populations scandinaves. Ces résultats suggéraient l’existence d’un compromis entre survie à une déshydratation sévère (sécheresse, gel) et potentiel de croissance. Alors que ce compromis a été vérifié en été (sècheresse sévère à Montpellier) et en hiver (gel en Norvège), la survie à une déshydratation de contre-saison au printemps n’est pas corrélée au potentiel de croissance des populations. Les résultats invalident donc l’existence d’un compromis constant entre survie au stress et potentiel de croissance aérienne. Ce découplage chez le dactyle permet d’envisager la sélection artificielle, à partir de la variabilité intraspécifique existante, de variétés à la fois productives et tolérantes au stress hydrique. L’imposition d’une déshydratation édaphique sévère en pots limitant l’expansion du système racinaire a montré que les populations méditerranéennes survivent mieux que les populations tempérées ou nordiques. L’association de ces résultats avec ceux issus d’une expérimentation en longs tubes favorisant le développement potentiel des racines révèle un compromis entre les stratégies d’évitement de la déshydratation (acquisition de l’eau et maintien de la croissance) et de tolérance à la déshydratation (faible croissance et forte survie à la sécheresse) qui pourrait limiter la combinaison de stratégies adaptatives au sein d’un même phénotype. Cette thèse contribue à améliorer notre compréhension des compromis fonctionnels, peu étudiés à l’échelle intraspécifique, mais qui sous-tendent la réponse des plantes à la sécheresse. / Drought risk increases with climate change. Improving our understanding of the adaptive mechanisms of plants response to drought has thus become one of the major challenges of ecological and agronomical research. This work investigates the drought survival of a perennial herbaceous species (Dactylis glomerata L.) through the intraspecific variability of above and below ground traits expressed by fifteen native and cultivated populations originating from a large latitudinal gradient, from Scandinavia to Morocco. Population traits characterization across one year under optimal growth conditions showed phenological coordination of above ground traits associated with seasonal growth limitations according to the origins of the populations. The spring growth rhythm does not discriminate origins while the summer dormancy of Mediterranean population contrasts with the winter dormancy of Scandinavian populations. These results suggested a growth-dehydration stress survival trade-off. Although this trade-off was confirmed in summer (severe drought in Montpellier) and winter (severe frost in Norway), no correlation was found between an off-season (spring) drought stress survival and populations’ growth potential. The result invalidates the existence of a constant trade-off between stress survival and aerial growth potential. This apparent decoupling in cocksfoot could be considered to produce new cultivars with both high productivity and high drought tolerance, from existent intraspecific variability. A severe dehydration stress imposed on plants grown in short pots, limiting roots expansion, showed that Mediterranean populations survived better than temperate or Nordic populations. In association with a long tube experiment allowing full expression of roots development, this result revealed a functional trade-off between dehydration avoidance (water acquisition and growth maintenance) and dehydration tolerance (low growth and high drought survival) which could limit the combination of adaptive strategies in a single phenotype. This work contribute to improve our knowledge about functional trade-offs, few studied within species, that underpin plant response to drought stress.

Doenças como a dengue, chikungunya, Zika e febre amarela urbana são causadas por patógenos transmitidos pela picada de fêmeas infectadas de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus. Fatores bióticos, como a competição na fase larval, e abióticos, como a variação da temperatura, provocam alterações no ciclo de desenvolvimento dessas espécies. O presente estudo avaliou os efeitos da competição intraespecífica e da temperatura na atividade locomotora de fêmeas virgens de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus. Os objetivos do trabalho foram: comparar o tamanho das fêmeas de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus oriundas de criadouros com baixa e alta competição intraespecífica; avaliar o efeito da competição intraespecífica na atividade locomotora de fêmeas virgens de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus, sob regime de 12 horas de claro e 12 horas de escuro, à 25ºC e analisar o padrão da atividade locomotora de fêmeas virgens de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus, sob regime de 12 horas de claro e 12 horas de escuro, sob diferentes temperaturas (20ºC, 25ºC e 30ºC). As colônias dos mosquitos utilizados nos experimentos são provenientes da FIOCRUZ-RJ. Para o experimento de competição, larvas de ambas as espécies foram criadas sob condições de alta (100 larvas) e baixa (20 larvas) densidades. Para isso, foram utilizadas 14 bacias preenchidas com 500 ml de água e 0,2 g de ração para peixes. Após a competição, as fêmeas oriundas de cada densidade foram transferidas para incubadoras para a realização da análise da atividade locomotora. Após a atividade, verificou-se o tamanho dos adultos oriundos de cada densidade larvária, por meio da medição das asas de cada fêmea. Para a análise da atividade locomotora sob diferentes temperaturas, as fêmeas utilizadas foram desenvolvidas em ambiente com quantidade de ovos similares. Foi utilizado o mesmo procedimento para análise da atividade do experimento anterior, porém, cada experimento ocorreu sob diferentes temperaturas: 20°C, 25°C e 30°C. Para a análise dos dados obtidos foram utilizados os testes T e ANOVA multifatorial. Para o experimento de competição, fêmeas de ambas as espécies oriundas de competição de baixa densidade foram maiores do que as oriundas de desenvolvimento sob alta densidade larvária. A atividade das fêmeas de Ae. aegypti e Ae. albopictus de ambas as densidades foi muito semelhante, sugerindo que fêmeas menores tem atividade equivalente à de fêmeas maiores. Já no experimento que avaliou a atividade das fêmeas sob faixas térmicas distintas, notou-se que, em Ae. aegypti, houve diferença significativa na atividade total sob 20°C quando comparadas a 25°C e 30°C, demonstrando que a temperatura mais baixa foi limitante para a atividade desta espécie. Houve diferenças em algumas médias avaliadas na atividade de Ae. albopictus, porém, esta espécie pareceu ter sido menos influenciada com a variação da temperatura. Análises estatísticas confirmaram que as fêmeas de Ae. aegypti respondem de forma distinta das fêmeas de Ae. albopictus quando as temperaturas foram modificadas. After the activity, the size of adult from each larval density, were verified by wings measurement of each female. For the analysis of the locomotor activity under different temperatures, the females used were developed in an environment with similar amount of eggs. The same procedure was used to the analyze the activity of the previous experiment, however, each experiment happened under different temperatures: 20°C, 25°C e 30°C. For the analysis of the obtained data were applied T tests and ANOVA multivariate. For the competition experiment, females of both species from low density of competition were longer than females from competition under high larval density. The activity of females of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus from both densities was very similar, suggesting that smaller females have equivalent activity to that of larger females. In the experiment that evaluated the activity of females under different thermal bands, it was noticed that in Ae. aegypti there was significant difference in total activity under 20°C when compared with 25°C and 30°C degrees, demonstrating the lower temperature was limiting to activity for this species. There were differences in some averages evaluated in Ae. albopictus activity, however, this species seemed to have been less influenced with the temperature variation. Statistical analysis confirmed that females of Ae. aegypti respond differently than females of Ae. albopictus when the temperatures were modified. The present study helps to clarify some aspects about the behavior of mosquitoes Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus which are considered of great concern for public health.

The ability to accurately identify species is fundamental to ecological research and environmental monitoring. Current taxonomic identifications often rely on differentiation of morphologically ambiguous characters, and a process of categorization which is tedious and often leads to misidentifications. This is compounded by the presence of cryptic taxa, which may be prevalent among Polychaete worms (Polychaeta: Annelida). With increased access to genetic techniques, Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I has been suggested as a possible aid to assist in the discrimination of species resources. In this study, I tested the hypothesis that the mtDNA COI gene locus is effective in discriminating morphologically recognised species of Polychaete worms. A 543 base-pair fragment of the COI locus was successfully extracted for 111 individuals from 16 out of 20 morphologically recognised species. Average intraspecific divergences were 0.8 %, ranging from 0 % to 5 %. Average interspecific variation was 26.4 %, ranging from 13.8 % to 36.8 %. The lowest divergences were found between two Nereid species (13.8 %), and two Glycera americana species (17.2 %). Relatively high maximum divergences of over 30 % suggest that some species may have reached a divergence saturation level, which may partially explain why familial groupings in constructed trees were not monophyletic. Divergences within the different Nereid species - a group previously known to have morphologically cryptic species - did not reveal the presence of any cryptic taxa. Pairwise comparisons showed a clear divide between percentages of intra- and interspecific divergences, and the suggested threshold of 11 % is effective for the taxa investigated here. On the basis of these results, I conclude that sequence variation in the mtDNA COI gene locus is effective in discriminating morphologically recognised species of Polychaete worms, but may not be appropriate for deeper (e.g. generic or familial) phylogenetic relationships among taxa.

Intraspecific competition among early life stages and the optimal spawning strategy of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus)

This collection of studies was designed to understand the mechanisms and consequences of competition among early life stages of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), with a special attention to asymmetric competition and multiple-breeding strategy of parents. The overall hypotheses were that (1) red drum larvae show behavioral interactions, and the magnitude of these interactions is explained by the sizes of the competing individuals, (2) red drum larvae compete for food and habitat use, and the competition is asymmetric as determined by size and behavioral interactions, and (3) the parents can reduce negative effects of competition among larvae and increase larval survival by altering their multiple-spawning traits. The laboratory experiments showed the existence of sociality in red drum larvae. The magnitudes of aggressive behavior, vigilant behavior and shoaling behavior were explained by a combination of absolute and relative phenotypes of competing individuals, such as body lengths and body condition. A new method of combining the laboratory experiments and the foraging theory disentangled interference competition for food from exploitative competition, revealing that both absolute and relative body lengths of competing individuals influence feeding efficiencies. In addition, vigilant behavior decreased feeding efficiency regardless of body sizes. The competitor size and behavioral interactions between individuals had different effects on competition for habitat use: the existence of larger individuals prevented the newly settled larvae from entering preferred habitats, whereas the aggressive behavior from the occupants of preferred habitats moved newly settled larvae to the unpreferred habitats. Finally, computer simulations using an individual-based model revealed that as interference competition among larvae increased, the number of spawning events and the spawning interval of the parents increased to lessen competition and maximize total survival of offspring. / text

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Crustaceans of the genus Aegla occur in continental waters, in southern South America. The genus is composed by more than 70 species, most of them characterized by having restricted distributions. Unlike this pattern, the species Aegla longirostri and Aegla platensis have wide geographic distributions. Moreover, both species form non-monophyletic groups, which may indicate that these groups are formed by cryptic species. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze populations of A. longirostri and A. platensis through a geometric morphometric approach, in order to clarify their intraspecific relationships. For A. longirostri, we analyzed 120 individuals from 6 populations, totalizing 20 animals per population. For A. platensis, we analyzed 110 individuals from 11 populations (four Argentinean and seven Brazilian), totalizing 10 animals per population. For both species, the animals were photographed in dorsal view, and 19 landmarks were defined on the carapace. Both sides of the carapace were symmetrized, and the landmarks coordinates were superimposed. Variations in centroid size were tested with an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey s test. For A. longirostri, we also used a Procrustes ANOVA. Variations in carapace shape were explored through a principal component analysis (PCA), and afterwards through a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and a canonical variate analysis (CVA), based on the first 8 principal components. The Mahalanobis distances between the populations were calculated. For statistical test of carapace shape differences, we used multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and for pairwise comparisons among populations we used Bonferroni corrections for adjust of p-value after multiple MANOVAs. For A. longirostri, CV1 and CV2 represented 46.5% and 23.1% of the variation, respectively. The most geographically distant population showed the highest values of Mahalanobis distance. The pairwise comparisons showed that all populations of A. longirostri differ significantly in carapace shape. For A. platensis, CV1 and CV2 represented 28.5% and 22.2% of the variation, respectively. There was a separation between Argentinean and Brazilian populations, with high values of Mahalanobis distances between populations from both countries. The pairwise comparisons showed that all populations of A. platensis differ significantly in carapace shape, with the exception of a pair of Argentinean populations and a pair of Brazilian populations. Some characteristics of the aeglids indicate that these animals may have low dispersal potential, thus the geographic distance may have led to an interruption of the gene flow between populations. Added to the non-monophyletic grouping, the intraspecific difference in carapace shape in A. longirostri and A. platensis could be an evidence that populations of both species are fragmented. / Crustáceos do gênero Aegla ocorrem em águas continentais, no sul da América do Sul. O gênero é composto por mais de 70 espécies, caracterizadas em sua maioria por possuírem distribuições restritas. Ao contrário deste padrão, as espécies Aegla longirostri e Aegla platensis possuem distribuições geográficas amplas. Além disso, ambas as espécies formam agrupamentos não-monofiléticos, o que pode indicar que esses agrupamentos são formados por espécies crípticas. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar populações de A. longirostri e A. platensis através de técnicas de morfometria geométrica, visando esclarecer suas relações intraespecíficas. Para A. longirostri, foram analisados 120 indivíduos provenientes de seis populações, totalizando 20 animais de cada população. Para A. platensis, foram analisados 110 indivíduos provenientes de 11 populações (quatro argentinas e sete brasileiras), totalizando 10 animais de cada população. Para ambas as espécies, os animais foram fotografados em vista dorsal e foram selecionados 19 marcos anatômicos localizados na carapaça. Ambos os lados da carapaça foram simetrizados e as coordenadas dos marcos anatômicos foram sobrepostas. Variações no tamanho do centroide foram testadas através de análise de variância (ANOVA) de um critério e teste de Tukey. Para A. longirostri, também foi utilizada ANOVA de Procrustes. Variações na forma da carapaça foram exploradas através de análise de componentes principais (PCA), e posteriormente através de análise linear discriminante (LDA) e análise de variáveis canônicas (CVA), com base nos 8 primeiros componentes principais. Foi calculada a distância de Mahalanobis entre as populações. Variações na forma da carapaça foram testadas através de análise de variância multivariada (MANOVA) e MANOVAs par a par seguidas por correção de Bonferroni. Para A. longirostri, CV1 e CV2 corresponderam a 46,5% e 23,1% da variação, respectivamente. A população mais distante geograficamente apresentou os maiores valores de distância de Mahalanobis. As MANOVAs par a par demonstraram que todas as populações de A. longirostri diferem significativamente na forma da carapaça. Para A. platensis, CV1 e CV2 corresponderam a 28,5% e 22,2% da variação, respectivamente. Houve uma separação entre as populações argentinas e brasileiras, com valores de distância de Mahalanobis maiores entre as populações dos dois países. As MANOVAs par a par demonstraram que todas as populações de A. platensis diferem significativamente na forma da carapaça, com exceção de um par de populações argentinas e um par de populações brasileiras. Algumas características dos eglídeos indicam que esses animais possuem baixo potencial de dispersão, portanto, a distância geográfica pode ter levado à interrupção do fluxo gênico entre as populações. Somada à ausência de monofilia, a diferença intraespecífica na forma da carapaça em A. longirostri e A. platensis pode ser um indício de que populações de ambas as espécies estão fragmentadas.
