The Obama doctrine - a multipolar foreign policy.Khan, Ismail January 2013 (has links)
This paper will clarify the debate surrounding contemporary American foreign policy, and it seeks to bring awareness to the vast field surrounding the topic. This essay is a case study, and it focuses mainly on the Obama doctrine, it does also shed light to the former foreign policy of the Bush administration. The research questions seek to investigate what theory of polarity characterises the Obama doctrine. It does also investigate how the United States foreign policy has changed under the Obama administration, by applying the methodology of a text analysis, the three theories of polarity: “Balance of power, hegemonic theory, and multipolarity” are in turn applied on three challenging areas for contemporary American foreign policy. The results show that the foreign policy led by the Obama administration, is heavily influenced by the theory of multipolarity. /
Jag har inte publicerat min uppsats, blev klar med den juni 2013.

Tack

Universalizing Egypt: Suez Canal, Debt, Corvée, and the Rise of Modern GovernmentElhoudaiby, Ibrahim January 2022 (has links)
This dissertation offers a new interpretation of the middle decades of nineteenth-century Egypt, which were decisive in forming Egyptian modernity. This period is usually understood as merely the precursor to the direct colonial rule that followed. Instead, this dissertation argues that the reigns of Sa‘īd (1854-1863) and Ismā‘īl (1863-1879) were defined by Egypt’s unique legal status.
During this period, Egypt was neither a sovereign state, nor directly ruled by the Ottoman Empire, nor annexable to any other empire. This peculiar legal status led to the emergence of Egypt as an object of “the universal.” This term is taken from the unusual name of the “Universal Company” that was created to build and operate the Suez Canal. The term denoted a new commercial domain, external to Europe and shaped by, yet equidistant from, the continent’s competing empires. The attempts to develop European capital outside the existing empires necessitated the construction of a new legal and political order. Taking the construction of the Canal as a vantage point through which to explore the consolidation of this new order, the dissertation focuses on three aspects.
First, I show how both Ottoman-Islamic and European precedents contributed to the formation of the universal. I outline social and legal changes, spanning the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, that allowed the extension of the European company-form to the Ottoman world in the nineteenth century; trace the rise of Egypt as a pivotal link of imperial communications in the first half of the nineteenth century; and investigate the implications of the political tensions between the Ottoman Sultan and his viceroy in Egypt in the 1830s.
Second, I explore the consolidation of the universal legal domain in Egypt. I argue that the inter-imperial dispute over the construction of the Suez Canal led to the emergence of the company as the object of the universal, and that, in the following decades, the company’s directors catalyzed the entrenchment of a “universal” commercial domain in Egypt in the period between 1868 and 1876. Finally, I explore the implications of the universality of Egypt on the rise of modern government. I focus on the legal transformations, including the formation of the Mixed Courts, that foreshadowed the establishment of modern courts; changes in the command of labor that gave rise to Egyptianness as a collective identity; and the indebtedness of the government that precipitated the emergence of an independent (non-Ottoman) state apparatus with compromised sovereignty.

Projecting peripheries : allegories of marginality in post-communist Romanian cinemaIacob, Raluca January 2015 (has links)
This thesis addresses aspects of Romanian society and cinema, by analyzing post-communist films through the perspective of marginality. The central hypothesis of this study refers to the ways in which films illustrate conditions of post-communist Romanian society, as they consider representations of the periphery through the angle of allegories of marginality. Following a long tradition, especially in literary studies, where it refers to the overt insertion of symbolic meanings, allegory refers in this study to a less noticeable delivery, by using a postmodern interpretation of the concept. This translates to detecting a latent meaning in films, by interpreting them in a broader context pertaining both to the film's circumstances (production, distribution and reception), and to the broader framework of the film's content. What connects post-communist Romanian films is a concern for matters of marginality, as they focus on dissensions in society, intergenerational conflicts, youth and limited opportunities of social movement, and the use of satire as a way of handling the bleak conditions of life. Aiming to provide a realistic representation of post-communist life, new wave Romanian films focus on the mundane reality of everyday life. The films discussed in this thesis expand beyond the scope of the new wave, and present a diversity of aesthetic approaches and relating perspectives on allegory—from distinct to obscure—defined by the contextual conditions of post-communism.

This study is an attempt to bring to light an important Ottoman Turkish work of theosophy entitled Ïtâl]ü'I-l:fikem (Elucidation of Wisdoms), written by Ismall An~aravT (d. 1631) as a commentary on the treatise Hayakil al-Nür (The Temples of Ught) by Shihàb al-Din Suhrawardl (d. 1191). The study consists of three main parts. The first part provides a detailed account of the life and works of the author, An~aravT, with an emphasis on his scholarship in the context of the Ottoman learned class. The second part, which is the main body of this research, presents a chapter by chapter analysis of the significant issues discussed in An~aravl's commentary, in comparison with the commentary of JalaJ al-Dln Oawwani (d. 1502), by whom he seems to be influenced. This section is an investigation of An~aravT's reformulation of Ishrâqi wisdom within the framework of his orthodox mystical views. In the last part, on the basis of ail available manuscripts, which are collated, a reliable text for edition is established.

Previous issue date: 2009 / About the tension between the institutions and their "users", about strategic calls and tactical deviations, about logics and cunnings, it´s that the present work seeks be structured. Having as reference Michel de Certeau´s conceptions, this dissertation takes Abril Despedaçado film as a investigation field, trying to think about revenge practices and their effects on them involved in the family contentions. Therefore, know that does such practice an institution, analyze their constituent elements and, above all, examine the ways like it is consumed by the habitants of Riacho das Almas - place of the interior baiano, stage of the conflict between Breves and Ferreiras -, are the main objectives. The "reflexivity" made possible by the estrangement and, consequently, the interpellation of the protagonists of the death cycle, is here a reflection object too. It is important to say, that this present work leaves of the idea that the cinema, as aesthetic experience, supplies tracks for understanding the social and cultural world.
