Keeper of the protocols : the works of Jens Bjørneboe in the crosscurrents of western literature

Martin, Joseph H. January 1987 (has links)
Keeper of the Protocols argues that Jens Bjørneboe was a consciously European author, of international stature, whose works cannot be properly understood if treated simply as the product of a "Scandinavian" writer. As Bjørneboe remains for the most part untranslated into English, the objectives of the study are two-fold: to introduce the works of Jens Bjørneboe, and to provide a detailed commentary on influence in his works from classic and contemporary sources. The first chapter serves as an introduction to Bjørneboe supplying a concise overview of his literary career as playwright, novelist, poet and essayist. In chapter two, his early achievements as a poet and novelist are discussed. The point of departure for the earliest works lies in the spiritual system of Anthroposophy and the powerful influence of Rilke. The chapter culminates with commentaries on his highly controversial debate-novels. The third chapter is an extended study of his pivotal trilogy known as "The History of Bestiality": Frihetens øyeblikk (1966), Kruttårnet (1970) and Stillheten (1973). While the trilogy represents a confrontation with Western , culture, it also depicts modern man in a world devoid of values and meaning. Here, the influence of Nietzsche and Sartre are traceable. In the trilogy, Bjørneboe's thinking on violence and society intersects with that of Michel Foucault and René Girard. The fourth chapter is a discussion of Bjørneboe and the theater. As a Norwegian dramatist who rejected Ibsen's form of theater, he found recourse alternately in Brecht, Strindberg and Tennessee Williams. Bjørneboe's major plays can best be understood in light of this set of influences. The fifth and final chapter examines the "anarchism" which was Bjørneboe's final philosophical resting place. The parallels with Camus's ideas in L'Homme revolté are readily discernible. Bjørneboe's final novel, Haiene (1974), which was to commence his "History of Freedom," is a sea novel which invites comparison with Conrad, particularly Conrad's conception of history. Bjørneboe's letters and unpublished autobiography show an increasing preoccupation with the split between social and metaphysical concerns. His final months, and his assessment of his own literary accomplishment, are reviewed in light of this conflict. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Kriminalitet sätter mannen på prov : En studie av identitetsskapande i romanen Snabba Cash. / Criminality puts the man to the test : A study of identity construction in the novel Snabba Cash.

Rastbäck, Emma January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this Master’s thesis is to examine how representations of identity construction are performed through the characters in the novel Snabba Cash by author Jens Lapidus. I examine what means the characters are using, and how the identity construction processes are related to the idea of modern society. For a theoretical background I use sociologist Anthony Giddens’ theories regarding modernity and self-identity, to study general identity construction. Due to the fact that the three main characters of the novel are all men, I also examine the construction of masculine identity using sociologist R.W. Connell’s theories about hegemonic masculinity. Lastly, I use theories about representations by mass communication professor Stuart Hall, in order to examine the representation of reality presented in the novel. The study is performed within a Sociology of Literature framework, and the method used is a form of ideology analysis. The result shows that the three characters have a lot in common regarding how they define themselves as men. They tend to use the same features in order to appear masculine, with a few divergences. I found that the criminal life style that they are all embracing is a fruitful means in their work of construction and re-construction of their masculine identity, but that criminality is not essential in this process. Modernity is also a key factor to the reflexive project that is elementary in construction of a self-identity, and its wide range of possibilities is more or less the key to identity construction and re-construction. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Danz a Schröter: Současné koncepty evangelické christologie / Danz and Schröter: Current concepts of protestant Christology

Kučera, Jiří January 2021 (has links)
This dissertation presents current concepts of protestant Christology, primarily based on how contemporary German theologians Christian Danz and Jens Schröter formulate their Christological theses. The first two parts of the thesis present the Christological concepts of both theologians. The presentation of the two conceptions follows their distinctive character and is not primarily structured for direct comparison. The work thus also covers aspects of the two theologians that are difficult to compare. The third part of the thesis is devoted to a critical comparison of the presented Christological conceptions. The comparison highlights specific moments in both theologians, their possible contradictions, and, at times, surprising agreements. The thesis does not conclude only by stating the partial differences of the Christological conceptions but attempts to formulate some current Christological trends in a more general way. Finally, the thesis concludes with the formulation of theses that could guide the author's Christological conception.
