Kolizní normy v izraelském právním systému / Rules of Conflict of Laws in the Israeli LawPezl, Tomáš January 2019 (has links)
The submitted dissertation is exploring the rules of conflict-of-laws in the Israeli legal system. It does not only cover the rules of private international law but also inter-religious rules of conflict-of-laws. There is a special focus on religious legal systems, especially on Jewish law and its rules. The religious law in Israel does regulate rights of the personal status and therefore it imminent that conflicts between various religious legal systems as well as between religious and state law may occur. The thesis, in the beginning, tries to cover the development of Israeli law since the Ottoman times directly preceding the establishment of the British mandate over Palestine. Keywords: Israel, conflict-of-laws, Jewish law

The Karaite Jews in IsraelNewman, Albert Richard 11 1900 (has links)
Founded in the eighth Century CE by Anan ben David, the basic tenet of this breakaway Jewish sect was that the Bible was the only divine script. Over the ensuing years, a long line of sages consolidated this dictum, establishing a set of rules which at times was even more rigid than the Rabbanite teachings they had rejected.
From the tenth to the twentieth centuries the Karaites were dispersed and persecuted as were their Rabbanite brethren. By the middle of the 20th century, their largest settlement, a flourishing community in
Egypt, came to an end with the eruption of hostilities between Israel and her Arab neighbours. Most of this community settled in Israel where they met with opposition or indifference from the Rabbanite establishment.
This work describes the history of the Karaites, their present situation and the barriers they have overcome in the fulfillment of their special brand of Judaism. / Religious Studies & Arabic / M.A. (Semitics)

Scientific Authority and Jewish Law in Early Modern ItalyGlasberg Gail, Debra January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines the interactions between early modern science and traditional Jewish legal scholarship through the life and work of Italian rabbi and physician Isaac Lampronti (1679-1756). Lampronti produced both the first alphabetically organized encyclopedia (the Paḥad Yiẓḥak) and the first periodical (the Bikurei kaẓir) of rabbinic law, which refashioned the traditional rabbinic system according to scientific methodologies and emerging Enlightenment ideas. Unwilling to relinquish the authorities of either science or traditional Jewish law, Lampronti creatively mediated the tensions between the two. The dissertation shows that the intellectual movements of the period not only catalyzed innovation within the realm of religious belief, they transformed religious practice and study as well.
