Apresentam-se o município e algumas de suas características, bem como alguns indicadores socioeconômicos. Também são apresentadas as famílias de sitiantes entrevistadas, caracterizando-as conforme sua localização socioespacial no município. Procura-se contextualizar algumas mudanças pelas quais o município e essas famílias vêm passando. Nesse sentido, são analisados alguns aspectos do trabalho familiar rural. Procura-se examinar as categorias trabalho/ajuda e o modo como são apropriadas no cotidiano do sítio. Destaca-se a inserção ativa das mulheres no trabalho cotidiano da propriedade e na formação da renda familiar, capitaneando as ativídades de transformação dos produtos dos sítios, o que, em muitos casos, vem viabilizando a manutenção dos mesmos, ao mesmo tempo em que provoca mudanças no papel social da mulher na família. Finalmente, procura-se realçar os projetos desses sitiantes para se manterem e à sua família no e do sítio, e as estratégias desenvolvídas para que isso se torne viável. Observa-se que essas estratégias incluem a opção por estabelecer uma vida no bairro rural, porém, com uma relação mais estreita com a cidade, pelo investimento na escolarização dos filhos e por estratégias econômicas que incluem tanto a diversificação da produção como dos investimentos / Abstract: The present work is the result of an investigation on family farmers from Joanópolis (SP), a municipality distant 110km from the city of São Paulo. The municipality is described, as well as some of its socio-economic indicators. The families whose members were interviewed are also presented and characterized according to their socio-spatiallocation in the municipality. Some of the changes that affected the municipality and the families are described in their contexto in this sense, some features of rural family work are analyzed; and the categories of work /help are examined as well as the way they are apprehended in the daily life of the family farmers. The active participation ofwomen in the property's daily work and in formation of family income are observed; women manage the activíties of farm products transformation. This is what, in many cases, make the maintenance of the properties possible and, at same time, causes changes in the woman's social rule in the family. Finally, the family farmers projects to make a living from the farm and in the farm get special attention, as well as theirs strategies to make it viable. 1t is observed that such strategies include the choice of establish life in the rural district, keeping however a closer relation with the city, investing in children's education and choosing economic strategies that include the diversification of both production and investments / Mestrado / Mestre em Sociologia
