This thesis is about the application of modern literary criticism to the epistle of Jude. One of the major questions it asks is "What happens to a text (Jude) when a reader reads it using one of these literary theories?" Or to put it a different way, "What does this way of reading emphasise which may have been neglected, ignored, or treated as irrelevant by other forms of reading?" The answers to these questions have been constructed around three loci: the reader, the text, and the author. Within the chapters constructed around those foci, the issues of power and desire, knowledge and language are brought to the forefront by the methods used for reading Jude. These methods include ideas drawn from reader response criticism, feminism, psychoanalysis, intertextuality, the study of tropes, structuralism, and post-structuralism. These methods and the ideas which they highlight are drawn together to comment on the relationship between the reader, the text, and the author and to accent their access (or lack of it) to desire, power, knowledge, and language. The epistle of Jude becomes an epistle that is about power and desire just as much as it is an epistle about "false teachers" and about a community of people known by the name Beloved.

Jude the Obscure is not only Thomas Hardy´s last but probably also his bleakest novel. Even the epigram on the frontispiece - 'The letter killeth [but the spirit giveth life]' - can be read as having negative forebodings; it can, however, also be interpreted as a commentary on the 'nature' of language and on the absolute necessity of understanding its founding mechanisms such as absence, difference and deferral if one is to lead a happy and meaningful life and if one endeavors to claim the freedom and the responsibility to construct one´s gender identity. This essay thus centers on the extent to which Hardy´s protagonist Jude Fawley, a man who desperately clings to the illusion of a transcendental signified, is able to understand and put into practice Hardy´s epigram when constructing his masculinity. Therefore, the focus of inquiry will be the hitherto largely neglected discursive construction of an ill-fated male gender identity in a discursive universe where 'nobody did come, because nobody does' and where taking words literally has lethal consequences.

Inwiefern, so konnte man sich zu Beginn dieses renditeorientierten, hoch kapitalistischen und allzeit praxisbezogenen 21. Jahrhunderts durchaus zu Recht fragen, gehört Kunst überhaupt zum Leben, inwiefern gehört Literatur zur Lebenskunst, und inwiefern trifft dies im Besonderen auch auf den Akt der Lektüre selbst zu? [...] Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht deshalb Jude the Obscure als 'medialer', fast schon medientheoretischer Roman, in dem es primär um den gelungenen oder gescheiterten Lektüreprozess von Zeichen geht, wobei gezeigt werden soll, dass Hardys letzter Roman gleich auf mehreren Textebenen sehr dezidiert verdeutlicht, wie Literatur gelesen werden und welche Kriterien eine adäquate Lektüre erfüllen sollte.

Scholarship addressing rhetoric in the Epistle of Jude has tended toward descriptions of the writer's tactic in terms of Greco-Roman rhetorical categories, or as evidence of a predetermined context. Such historical-critical concerns have unduly influenced rhetorical analyses and have not convincingly explained the writer's rhetorical strategy. One means of alleviating this deficiency is to understand rhetoric as a quality of the semantics created through grammar. This thesis develops a systemic functional linguistic methodology, which details many fundamental ways in which these rhetorical semantics are communicated through Koine Greek grammar in order to begin describing the rhetorical tactic of the writer. By explicating the LOGICAL and INTERPERSONAL semantics in the Epistle of Jude, it is demonstrated that the writer attempted to identify enemies of the addressed Christian community by their conduct, and to motivate the addressees of the epistle to "contend for the faith" by marshaling together in mutual support and by demonstrating mercy to these enemies. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Cardiovascular disease is one of the most prevalent causes of death which has a high mortality rate. If identified early and treated appropriately, the mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease can be hugely reduced. For several decades, 12-Lead ECG has been the standard technique used to identify ischemia, and recent studies have shown that intracardiac electrogram has many benefits over external monitoring such as holter. ST Monitoring feature has been added to St. Jude Medical intracardiac cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) to leverage the ECG technology for identifying cardiovascular disease. This algorithm monitors the intracardiac electrogram to detect and report patterns which could be related to ischemic events. This feature is expected to enhance the process of identifying ischemia and infarction, and provides long-term management of the disease. In order to support the new implantable devices with ST Monitoring capability, the programmer software was updated to support this new feature in the device. This thesis discusses the work on the programmer. Chapter 1 begins with a background of how monitoring technology in an implantable device can benefit the patients facing high risk of myocardial infarction. Chapter 2 states the objective for the work on the programmer. Chapter 3 describes the implementation and the application of this feature. Conclusion and future development are discussed in Chapter 5.
