The Gospel According to Thomas: Authoritative or Heretical?Remson III, Richard Elmer 04 January 2007 (has links)
The Gospel According to Thomas is found in the second manuscript of codex II of a set of texts found in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, collectively referred to today as the Coptic Gnostic Library. This gospel was readily identified as Thomas due to fragments of a Greek version of the text having already been discovered and identified in the 1890s at Oxyrhynchus, Egypt. However, the discovery near Nag Hammadi in 1945 C.E. was not of fragments, but it actually contained the entire text of Thomas. Thus, the finding of the entire text in Nag Hammadi brought about a set of questions that had not yet surfaced from the fragments of Thomas previously found at Oxyrhynchus, Egypt. For example, was Thomas actually written by Didymus Jude Thomas? If Thomas did not write it, then by whom was it written, and why did the actual author claim it to be written by Thomas?

Classes and class conflicts in Victorian England as explored by Thomas HardyVail, Nancy Burns 01 July 1968 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to study in depth the relationships of individuals in the three social classes in England during the Victorian Age. Since original documents and research material were scarce I used two novels by Thomas Hardy to illustrate the conflicts between representatives of the social classes. In 1891 England was prosperous and many people believed there was no conflict between the classes. Thomas Hardy believed this was untrue and, by method of comparison, wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure to prove his point. This thesis includes research on the two novels, Thomas Hardy’s life, and last but not least is a study of the Age of Victoria.

Medical devices used for surgical or therapeutic purposes require a high degree of safety and effectiveness. Software is critical component of many such medical devices. The software architecture of a system defines organizational structure and the runtime characteristic of the application used to control the operation of the system and provides a set of frameworks that are used to develop that. As such, the design of software architecture is a critical element in achieving the intended functionality, performance, and safety requirements of a medical device. This architecture uses object-oriented design techniques, which model the underlying system as a set of objects that interact to achieve their goals. The architecture includes a number of frameworks comprised of a set of classes that can be extended to achieve different functionality required for a medical device. The Input/ Output (IO) framework includes a number of core classes that implement periodic and a periodic input output with varying priority requirements, provides a hardware neutral interface to the application logic, and a set of classes that can be extended to both meet the hardware IO specifics of a target platform and create new sensor and actuator types for client applications. The Devices framework provides a blueprint to develop the controller logic of the medical device in terms of abstractions that parallel the hardware components of the medical device. The Configuration framework allows creation and configuration of a medical device from an XML (Extensible Markup Specification) specification that specifies the configuration of the device based on abstract factories that can be extended to meet requirements of a specific medical device. The Controller is the component of the architecture that defines classes that implement reception of commands from and transmission of status and data to a local or remote client and dictate the structure of threads, thread priorities and policies for this purpose. The Diagnostics package of the architecture defines a framework for developing components that monitor the health of the system and detect emergency conditions. The architecture is implemented in C++ and runs on a real-time LINUX operating system. At this time, the architecture is used in development of two of the St. Jude Medical Atrial Fibrillation Division’s medical devices; one of these has FDA class III and the other class II classification.

Pulmonary edema occurs when fluid leaks from the pulmonary capillary network into the lung interstitium and alveoli. When the heart is not able to pump blood to the body efficiently, fluid can back up into the veins that take blood through the lungs to the left atrium. This then builds up the pressure in the blood vessels and fluid is pushed into the alveoli in the lungs. The fluid reduces normal oxygen movement through the lungs and can cause impaired gas exchange and respiratory failure. There are many causes of congestive heart failure that may lead to pulmonary edema such as heart attack, any diseases of the heart that weaken or stiffen the heart muscle, a leaking or narrowed heart valve, and sudden, severe high blood pressure.
Pulmonary edema is a strong indicator of congestive heart failure in patients and therefore can be used as a gauge for congestive heart failure. One way to diagnose cardiogenic pulmonary edema constantly is through the continuous monitoring of the transthoracic impedance throughout the day. One method to achieve this constant monitoring is through the use of a cardiac pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Many patients who are at risk of heart failure have these medical devices implanted already. In these implantable cardiac devices, the connected cardiac leads can be utilized to continually screen several impedance vectors for decreases in impedance in the thoracic cavity. A pacemaker or ICD that implements Pulmonary Edema Monitoring is designed to continuously monitor these impedance vectors and alert the patient to seek medical attention. This thesis will discuss the implementation of Pulmonary Edema Monitoring via screening of multiple impedance vectors in a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator and the effectiveness of this monitoring method. Furthermore, the design, implementation, and testing of this feature will be explored in greater detail.

Articulations of value in the humanities : the contemporary neoliberal university and our Victorian inheritanceBulaitis, Zoe Hope January 2018 (has links)
This thesis traces the shift from liberal to neoliberal education from the nineteenth century to the present day, in order to provide a rich and previously underdeveloped narrative of value in higher education in England. Rather than attempting to justify the value of the humanities within the presiding economic frameworks, or writing a defence against market rationalism, this thesis offers an original contribution through an immersion in historical, financial, and critical debates concerning educational policy. Drawing upon close reading and discursive analysis, this thesis constructs a nuanced map of the intersections of value in the humanities. The discussion encompasses an exploration of policymaking practices, scientific discourse, mediated representations, and public cultural life. The structure of the thesis is as follows. The introductory chapter outlines the overarching methodology by defining the contemporary period of this project (2008-14), establishing relevant scholarship, and drawing out the correspondences between the nineteenth century and the present day. Chapter one establishes a history of the Payment by Results approach in policymaking, first established in the Revised Code of Education (1862) and recently re-introduced in the reforms of the Browne Report (2010). Understanding the predominance of such short-term and quantitative policy is essential for detailing how value is articulated. Chapter two reconsiders the two cultures debate. In contrast to the misrepresentative, yet pervasive, perception that the sciences and the humanities are fundamentally in opposition, I propose a more nuanced history of these disciplines. Chapter three addresses fictional representations of the humanities within literature in order to establish a vantage point from which to assess alternative routes for valuation beyond economic narratives. The final chapter scrutinises the rise of the impact criterion within research assessment and places it within a wider context of market-led cultural policy (1980-90s). This thesis argues that reflecting on Victorian legacies of economism and public accountability enables us to reconsider contemporary valuation culture in higher education. This analytical framework is of benefit to future academic studies interested in the marketisation and valuation of culture, alongside literary studies that focus on the relationship between higher education, the individual, and the state.
