Career transitions for Swedish golf juniors

Jorlén, Daniel January 2008 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this study was to retrospective investigate perceived demands and barriers for</p><p>golf juniors in their transition from regional to national junior elite competitions, and to find</p><p>out what resources and coping strategies the juniors used to succeed with this transition. The</p><p>developmental model (Wylleman & Lavallee, 2004), The analytical career model</p><p>(Stambulova, 2003) and The athletic career transitions model (Stambulova, 1997; 2003) were</p><p>used as theoretical framework for this study. The interviews were conducted with nine junior</p><p>golf players. A semi-structured interview guide was used consisting of five main themes:</p><p>background information, changes/demands experienced in the transition, resources that helped</p><p>the golf juniors to adjust to the new level, strategies the golf juniors used to adjust to the new</p><p>level and an evaluation of the transition. The result showed that the players perceived the</p><p>practice as more serious with an overall higher quality when they started to compete in</p><p>national competitions. The players increased their training time and started to use a variation</p><p>of exercises that were similar to the different parts of a competition. The competitions were</p><p>also perceived as more challenging with stronger opponents and an increased rivalry between</p><p>the players. Confidence and self-esteem, the will to practice and win are characteristics that</p><p>many players consider to be important internal resources in order to adapt to the national</p><p>junior level. The players observed other players to learn from them and to see what they</p><p>needed to improve. Many players changed their golf coaches around the same time as they</p><p>started to compete at national junior level. The coaches and parents were seen as the most</p><p>important external resources in order to adapt to the national junior level. Many players</p><p>experienced that it would have been hard to play and compete in golf without their parents’</p><p>financial help and support. During the time of the transition, outside golf the players learned</p><p>how to take responsibility and how to take care of themselves through traveling alone,</p><p>meeting new people and living by themselves. The players experienced that the school didn’t</p><p>have any understanding for their need to be free from school. The players also had to give a</p><p>lower priority to some other things in their life in order to have enough time for golf. The</p><p>biggest change was that they had to spend less time with their friends and the different</p><p>activities that they used to do before.</p>

Honoring Transitions: An Examination of Junior and Senior Honors Student Engagement

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: This action research study took a mixed methods approach to examine junior and senior student engagement at the honors college in the downtown campus of Arizona State University. The purpose of the study was to better understand the lack of engagement with junior and senior students within the college. The study sought to examine the usage of year specific programs and the possibility of influence on the target populations’ engagement. In addition, the study focused on understanding the usage of such programs and its ability to influence student perception of coping with transitions. The growth of honors education and the value of student engagement lead the study. Life Hacks is a series of programs designed to engage the target population by addressing an anticipated transition. This study focused on exploring junior and senior honors student engagement and the utilization of programs to address the student’s ability to cope with transitions. The program was divided into six workshops that spanned the semester and were taught by college partners who were deemed a resource on the subject matter. Two surveys were deployed: one at the beginning of the semester and the other at the end of the semester. Participants were selected based on their academic status as a junior or senior within the honors college on campus and their age rage. All participants traditionally matriculated from high school and were between the ages of 18-25. Two focus groups, with a total of eight participants (4 juniors and 4 seniors), were conducted at the end of the semester to gather qualitative data. Findings indicated that participants allowed their emotions to influence their ability to cope with transitions. Relationships with peers and staff were important to decision making processes and network building for junior and senior participants. Students within the study set expectations for the college and themselves that influence how they relate to college and their relation to adulthood. The implications of practice that resulted from the study involved improving student access to information and assisting students with understanding the need for the resource and how to apply it to their current and future challenges. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2019

Career transitions for Swedish golf juniors – from junior to senior sport

Jorlén, Daniel January 2008 (has links)
AbstractSince the transition from junior to senior level within sport has been shown to be a crucial step, where many athletes fail, it is important to get more knowledge about this process. The objective of this study was to prospectively investigate perceived demands and barriers for golf juniors in their transition from junior to senior level, with college golf in USA. The purpose was also to find out what resources and coping strategies the juniors planned to use in order to succeed with the transition. The developmental model (Wylleman & Lavallee, 2004), The analytical career model (Stambulova, 1994) and The athletic career transitions model (Stambulova, 1997; 2003) were used as a theoretical framework. The study was conducted through interviews with nine junior golf players at the age of 18 to 20 years. A semi-structured interview guide was used consisting of two main themes: Expected general life changes/challenges and expected changes/challenges within golf. Prior research has revealed five dimensions of stress during the transition to senior sport: interpersonal relationships, being away from home, academics, high performance expectations and training intensity. All of these factors were mention by the golf juniors as possible barriers during the transition. The result showed that the participants didn’t predict any drastic changes in their everyday life and didn’t expect any major problems in their relationships to family and friends. Homesickness was mentioned by almost all of the players though as one of the biggest changes/challenges connected to the everyday life. The players also expected it to be difficult and hard to study at college in USA. Many stated that they would spend more time and focus on school, but at the same time, said that they would prioritize golf before school. Their main reason for going to USA was to succeed at golf, not to study. Harder climate and bigger rivalry among team players and on competitions were something that all of the players predicted. They also expected the college coaches to have a different leadership style and expressed concerns about the college coaches’ golf knowledge. Many of the players stated that they would continue to have a lot of contact with their old trainer in Sweden. The golf juniors reported of good external support from different persons with knowledge about golf college as well as from family and friends. The negative aspect of this support is that many of them are located in Sweden, far away from where the players will live. The golf juniors also mentioned internal resources such as different golf skills and personal characteristics, e.g., being social, positive, creative and goal-orientated as things that would be important for them during the transition. Many of the participants reported about goals and strategies concerning their golf play, but only a few of them mentioned preparations regarding their everyday life.

Goal setting strategies, perceived competence, goal orientation and well-being in junior and senior Swedish football players / Målsättning, upplevd kompetens, målorientering och psykologiskt välmående hos svenska junior och senior fotbollsspelare

Haga, Sandra, Idén Nordin, Amanda January 2015 (has links)
The objective of this study was to examine goal-setting, perceived competence, goal orientation and psychological well-being in Swedish male football players. Further it was investigated if junior players differed when compared with senior players regarding the subjects mentioned above. This was a quantitative study using the following four instruments: Goal Setting in Sport Questionnaire, Harter’s Competence Scale, Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire and General Health Questionnaire. The participants consisted of 121 male subjects who played in junior or senior teams. Achievement goal theory and a working model made by the authors based on previous research represented the theoretical framework. One-way ANOVA was used to examine differences between juniors and seniors. Pearson’s correlation test was used to examine relationships between all the variables. The results indicated that the juniors had significantly higher ego orientation when compared to the seniors. Significant differences also emerged in the importance of competence, negative selfconfidence and anxiety, where the juniors showed higher results in all. Finally, significant correlations were demonstrated between goal setting and perceived competence, task orientation and goal setting, task and positive well-being, ego and perceived competence, perceived competence and positive well-being and anxiety and negative self-confidence in both juniors and seniors. The results were discussed in relation to the working model, the theoretical framework and earlier research.

College and career ready? Perceptions of high school students related to WorkKeys assessments

Schultz, Deanna D. 07 December 2011 (has links)
Concern about college and career readiness has been expressed in both the business and education arenas. Employers are calling for entry-level employees with basic academic skills and educators are being held accountable for student achievement in academic areas similar to those required by employers. In this environment, WorkKeys has emerged as a set of assessments that could respond to the needs of both employers and educators and serve as an indicator to test takers of their readiness for further education or a career. In Alaska, state policymakers selected WorkKeys for use with high school juniors in an effort to measure both college and career readiness, and statewide testing was implemented in the fall of 2010. While past studies involving WorkKeys have focused on assessment results related to workforce development, academic indicators, or demographic variables, the purpose of this study was to describe the college and career readiness perceptions of high school juniors related to the WorkKeys Reading for Information, Locating Information, and Applied Mathematics assessments. A survey administered to 178 urban high school juniors at the time they received their WorkKeys results gathered student perceptions of the WorkKeys assessments in general as well as perceptions of college and career readiness. The key findings of this study were that student perceptions of college and career readiness were much higher than the results of the assessments indicated, and students found value in using WorkKeys results for college and career planning. This suggested the assessment results would be useful in career development interventions with students. This was the first year of mandatory WorkKeys assessments in the state and further study is recommended to gather rural student perceptions, further explore factors that students believe make the assessments useful, and determine the influence of the assessments and related interventions on academic self-efficacy. / Graduation date: 2012
