Uppsala Konstmuseum : Le Corbusier vs. Palladio / Uppsala Art Museum : Le Corbusier vs. Palladio

Gustafsson, Nils January 2014 (has links)
Two of the foremost theorists in architectural history; Andrea Palladio (1508-80) and Le Corbusier (1887-1965), are both good representatives of architectures two main branches; classicism and modernism. The architects are direct opposites in many aspects. However, they are both advocates of strict rules of producing good architecture. Their imprints in architectural history are inevitable in the briefest of summarys. The concept of putting these architect giants face to face, comparing their main points of theory and trying to combine them in a neverseen composit style, was developed as a result of an inventory of the site. In the surroundings of the Fyris River in central Uppsala, there is a vast amount of architectural styles, reaching from early 19th century neo-classicism to modern day neo-modernmism. Closest to the site, there is a post-modern residential building complex and some modernistic office buildings in true corbusian spirit. In these invironments, a new museum will be risen, a house of the new and the old, inside and outside.

Visuell stil och intertextualitet i hjärndöda Blockbusters : -”She got to you with her perfumed words and her perky breasts” / Visual style and intertextuality in brainless blockbusters : - ”She got to you with her perfumed words and her perky breasts”

Sandberg, Helena January 2020 (has links)
Martin Scorsese expressed dissatisfaction stating that superhero movies lacks uniqueness and emotional and psychological depth. In his opinion, these movies depict spectacle rather than character. Scorsese is not alone in his view - this has been a general opinion among film critics for decades. Justin Wyatt examines the recipe for commercial success in his book High concept: Movies and marketing in Hollywood from 1994. Film theorist Kristin Thompson however, denounces the idea that High Concept or post-classicism changes structures in narrative. This thesis examines visual style and intertextuality in three films released in 2019: Avengers: Endgame, Hellboy and Joker. Are there similarities and/or differences in relation to Wyatt’s theories? All three movies use style and intertextuality to tell their stories and they all have excess scenes to please the audience visually. However, they still use classic Hollywood narrative with three acts and cause-and-effect storylines.

Future/Modern/New/Contemporary Swedish Dwelling : using history to create contemporary dwellings

Fransson, Johan, Norlin, Olivia January 2015 (has links)
Kr.), indelad i fyra olika epoker. / A study concerning the history of Swedish dwellings and typologies, 13000 B.C. – 1930 A.D., divided into four different eras. The first part of the project included reading literature, foremost by the architect Erik Lundberg and the ethnologist Sigurd Erixon, together with a diagrammatic analysis of examples of buildings representative of each era. The project resulted in the design of four modern single-family houses, each based on one of the four eras in the Swedish history.

The Classist Turn in Swedish Architecture of the early 20th Century : a Study of Liljevalchs, Kungstornen and Kanslihuset in Stockholm

Knauff, Kristina January 2012 (has links)
The starting point of the thesis consists of a number of statements by prominent representatives of the cultural elite characterising architecture with references to classicism as the modern architecture. In the following years Swedish architecture was dominated by references to classical historical architecture focussing on the ideal of simplicity, which in turn formed a wider conceptual framework of ideas and ideals for architectural creation. The simple reason why the classical historical architecture became something of a role model was that it represented all these new ideals. The main purpose of the thesis is to study how architects made use of the more prominent ideals in the new conceptual framework. A secondary purpose is to describe and analyse the three chosen buildings in detail. A third purpose is to situate these buildings into the broader national context. The buildings under study are Liljevalchs konsthall (Liljevalchs Art Gallery), Kanslihuset (The Government Offices) and Kungstornen (The Towers). They were built at different times between 1910 and 1930. Each building has an obvious connection between the building program and the social changes of the time. In the first chapter the contemporary conceptual framework is presented based on examples from the architectural debate. The most important parts were the opposition to the traditional ideals in combination with the formulating of new ones like simplicity, unity and clarity as well as an orientation towards the historical national architecture and an open attitude towards new techniques. Central to the usage of the basic of elements of the historical architecture was transformation rather than imitation. The common view meant that role models and basic creational elements of the past were regarded as opportunities for new developments. The three following chapters examine the buildings under study. The buildings and their planning processes are described and the application of the historical references and their relations to historical buildings in the environment are analysed in detail. The buildings are further discussed in relation to the broader social trends of the time. The Art Gallery is discussed in view of its connections to the contemporary industrial architecture due to the industrialisation. The analysis of the Government Offices situates the practical and symbolic aspects of the building in the contemporary struggle between the monarchy and the old civil service and the newly established parliamentary democracy. The Towers are discussed in relation to the contemporary discussion of skyscrapers in Europe and in relation to the beginning of commercialism and popular culture. /
QC 20120424

Klassiskt och nordiskt : fornnordiska motiv i bildkonsten 1775-1855 / The classical and the Nordic : Old Norse motifs in art 1775-1855

Hansson, Nora January 2020 (has links)
The subject of this master’s thesis is depictions of Old Norse mythology and related motifs in the visual arts during the period 1775–1855. The main question of this research is how the motifs were visualized and how the depictions are related to the classical tradition. Three artworks are objects of detailed study: Johann Heinrich Füssli’s painting Thor Battering the Midgaard serpent (1790), Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg’s The death of Balder (1817) and Nils Jacob Blommér’s painting Näcken and the daughters of Ägir (1850). The paintings are compared with literary sources and analyzed in relation to classicism as well as ideas about history and the Old Norse. It is argued that symbols, themes and compositions from the classical tradition, such as the heroic nude, were used by artists to visualize motifs from Old Norse mythology. It is also argued that the depictions, which by previous scholars have been considered primarily classical, are in fact characterized by a resistance against likeness with the Olympic gods and antique costume.
