This essay discusses the aspects of Carnival in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the opposition between ordinary official life and the Carnival. Peter Burke’s and Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories on the Carnival are used throughout the analyse of the poem mainly with focus on four different aspects; food, sex, violence and games. The essay also discusses the questioning of rank, which was central to the spirit of the Carnival where all were considered equal.  Gawain is the protagonist who throughout the poem manages to resist the spirit of the Carnival despite being challenged by three different antagonists who in their on ways symbolise the Carnival; the Green knight with aggressive and mocking speech, the Lady of the Castle who acts as the seducer and Lord Bertilak who in his three hunts shows that he embraces the spirit of the Carnival.

This thesis aims to analyze the notions of sin and repentance of Lancelot and Gawain in Malory¡¦s Morte Darthur so as to unveil what Malory¡¦s ideal knight is to be like. While the traditional view takes Lancelot as a perfect knight and Gawain a reckless one because of their different dispositions, I approach these two characters from their breach of the chivalric code and their sequential penitence. Chapter I and Chapter II will study respectively how Lancelot and Gawain sin in the world of chivalry because of their wrongdoings. Although these two knights have both sinned, yet, in Malory¡¦s hands, these two knights are portrayed in divergent degrees with obviously contrastive narrative context and their repentance takes a different hue as well. Chapter III examines the repentance of Lancelot and Gawain and takes note that although both knights repent for their sins, forgiveness is granted to the former exclusively whereas the latter is denied such a treatment. Chapter IV concludes that such difference or prejudice is indicative of Malory¡¦s evaluation of Lancelot and Gawain in accordance with how the two knights handle their misdeeds and this implies the author¡¦s conception of what a perfect knight should be. Of particular interest is that Chapters I through IV trace the traditional theological view by looking at St. Thomas Aquinas¡¦ concept of sin and repentance. Aquinas¡¦ doctrinal view allows us to analyze Lancelot and Gawain¡¦s sin and repentance within a chivalric as well as theological domain and provides us a better base with which to understand these two concepts. This research strives to bring about a different perspective in evaluating Malory¡¦s knights.

This thesis will explore the images of nüxia or “female knight-errant” in Jin Yong’s novels: The Eagle-Shooting Heroes, the Giant Eagle and Its Companion, and the Heaven Sword and the Dragon Saber. The depiction of nüxia underwent a significant development from the classical to modern literature of knight-errantry-related genre. Jin Yong, the master of wuxia fiction, has created many remarkable nüxia that distinguishes his nüxia images from the literary conventions. To examine Jin Yong’s uniqueness in portraying nüxia, this thesis will look into the history of nüxia-related works of poetry and classical literature, and analyze Jin Yong’s nüxia in the context of the literary history. / Graduate

<p> We investigated the local electronic properties of the triangular-lattice materials NaxCO2 (x = 0.3, 0.72) and the superconductor Na0.3Co02-1.3H20 by 59Co and 170 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR). For Na0.72Co02 , 59Co NMR line shape shows clearly that there are two types of Co sites - Co(A) site and Co(B) site. The electronic character of Co(A) site is close to that of the less magnetic Co+3-like ion with spin rv 0, while the electronic character of Co(B) site is close to that of the strongly magnetic Co+4-like ions with spin ~ 1/2. The temperature dependence of the Knight shifts suggests that the Co(A) and Co(B) sites are electronically coupled, which is not consistent with simple phase separation. The local Co electronic environments propagate to the adjacent 0 layers through p-d hybridization. Therefore, there are two types of oxygen sites, O(A) site and O(B) site. We introduced a different route to do K vs x plot analysis for the Co sites and determined that for the Co sites, Karbitat(A) is 1.816 % and Kspin(A) is about rv 0.2 %; Karbitat(B) is 4.0255 % and Kspin(B) is at least 1.5 %. For Na0 .3Co02 , 59Co NMR line shape shows that the Co valence is averaged out in this material. There are two types of oxygen sites, 0( C) site and O(D) site, presumably because of the nearest neighbor Na+ sites. The constant behavior of Knight shifts below 100 K for both the Co and 0 sites suggests the emergence of a low temperature canonical Fermi-liquid behavior. For the superconductor Na0.3CoO2-1.3H20, both 59Co and 170 NMR line shapes show that there is only one type of Co site and oxygen site. The Knight shifts of 59Co and 170 are temperature independent below 100 K down to Tc. Combined with our spin-lattice relaxation 1/T 1 T measurements, we can rule out the possibility of ferromagnetic scenario of spin excitations above Tc. </p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

This thesis uses the concept of righteous justice found within The Water Margin and the legends of Robin Hood to analyze conflicts of differing ideologies of justice and morality between the ruling class and that of the common people. From these conflicts this thesis further expounds the idea of righteous justice on three points: 1) Examines political themes and portrayals of righteous justice within the content of The Water Margin and the legends of Robin Hood; 2) Performs a character analysis on how characters identify with the authority systems of both natural law and king¡¦s law based upon the western and Chinese ideals of righteous and public justice; 3) Uses the Marxist theory of history to discuss the formation of ideologies of the common people and how they identify with the concept of righteous justice. Further, this thesis examines the way in which the heroes of Mt. Liang and those of Greenwood forest are viewed by the different classes, and from this examination the manner in which the phenomenon of righteous justice becomes viewed as a legitimate form of justice representing the common people. From these points, this thesis discusses the ways in which righteous justice found among both western and Chinese legends creates moral exceptions within a society.
