Vliv LiOH na parametry alkalických akumulátorů / The LiOh influence in alkaline accumulators

The deal of this thesis is study of the influence of LiOH added to electrolyte on Ni-Cd batteries. In theoretical part are analyzed properties of Ni-Cd accumulators in strong alkaline surroundings, especially with emphasis on structure changing of NiOH2 and NiOOH. In the second part of theoretical are also described methods for depositing Ni layers. In practical part electro-chemical spectrum and mass changing on Quartz crystal microbalance are measured by cyclic voltammetry method during charge/discharge process. The process of cation integration to the positive electrode structure in KOH, NaOH and CsOH electrolyte including related structural changes are observed.

Characterization Of Defects And Evaluation Of Material Quality Of Low Temperature Epitaxial Growth

A novel process for low-temperature (LT) epitaxial growth of silicon carbide (SiC) by replacing the growth precursor propane with chloro-methane was recently developed at Mississippi State University. However, only limited information was available about the defects and impurity incorporation in the various types of epitaxial layers produced by this new method like blanket epitaxial layers, selectively grown epitaxial mesas, and highly doped epitaxial layers, prior to their comprehensive characterization in this work. Molten potassium hydroxide (KOH) etching, mechanical polishing and a variety of other characterizing techniques were used to delineate and identify the defects both in the epilayer and substrates. Under optimum growth conditions, the concentration of defects in the epitaxial layers was found to be less than that in the substrate, which established the good quality of the LT growth process. Defect concentrations, on selectively grown epitaxial layers, strongly depended on the crystallographic orientation of the mesa sidewall. The addition of HCl to the growth process, aimed at increasing the growth rate, caused a significant concentration of triangular defects (TDs) to be formed in the epitaxial layers. The TDs were traced down to the substrate by a combination of repeated polishing and molten KOH etching steps. The TDs were found not to originate from any substrate defects. Their origin was traced to polycrystalline silicon islands which form on the surface during growth and subsequently get evaporated away, which had made it impossible to detect them and suspect their influence on the TD generation prior to this work. The TDs were found to include single or multiple stacking faults bound by partial dislocations and, in some cases, inclusions of other SiC polytypes. Gradual degradation of the epitaxial morphology was found in heavily aluminum doped p+ layers, with an increase in the level of doping, followed by much steeper degradation when approaching the solubility limit of Al in 4H-SiC. Precipitates were the dominating defect at the highest levels of doping and were observed beyond a doping of 3.5x1020 cm-3. A dislocation generation model for heavily doped epitaxial layers was developed accounting for the stress in the lattice caused by Al doping.

A Study on the Nature of Anomalous Current Conduction in Gallium Nitride

Current leakage in GaN thin films limits reliable device fabrication. A variety of Ga and N rich MBE GaN thin films grown by Rf, NH3, and Rf+ NH3, are examined with electrical measurements on NiIAu Schottky diodes and CAFM. Current-voltage (IV) mechanisms will identify conduction mechanisms on diodes, and CAFM measurements will investigate the microstructure of conduction in GaN thin films. With CAFM, enhanced conduction has been shown to decorate some extended defects and surface features, while CAFM spectroscopy on a MODFET structure indicates a correlation between extended defects and field conduction behavior at room temperature. A remedy for poor conduction characteristics is presented in molten KOH etching, as evidenced by CAFM measurements, Schottky diodes, and MODFET's. The aim of this study is to identify anomalous conduction mechanisms, the likely cause of anomalous conduction, and a method for improving the conduction characteristics. The diploma thesis being submitted deals with the issue of applying managerial strategies and their economic impacts on the České Budějovice pencil factory within the years 1945-1948. The core sources for this analysis were mostly annual reports and operation reports, meeting minutes, statistical reports, correspondence, and sources of private nature. The thesis builds upon the methodological bases of business history. The most prominent pencil industry people of the post-war era became the main subject of the research. Based on the business strategies of these managers, the following parts of the thesis then focused on economic evolution, on which they applied both vertical and horizontal comparisons. The advertising activities of these pencil factories or the negotiations with the former subsidiaries represented by the Hardmuth family did not go unnoticed either. The key contribution of this thesis lies in its analysis of the nationalization process followed by the centralization of the Czechoslovakian pencil industry.

Heavy Metals in Glass Beads Used in Pavement Markings

Pavement markings are vital for safely navigating roadways. The nighttime visibility of pavement markings is enhanced by addition of retroreflective glass beads, most of which are made from recycled glass. Concern has been raised over the presence of heavy metals in glass beads used in pavement markings and their effect on human and environmental health. Based upon the potential risk associated with the presence of arsenic and lead in the glass beads, two Bills are currently being considered before the 112th Congress of the United States of America seeking to set a maximum permissible limit for the amount of arsenic and lead in glass beads used within pavement marking systems on domestic roadways. This study was designed to support legislative decision making by providing data necessary for risk assessment. The experiments carried out provide: an analysis of glass bead metal content and extractability; an evaluation of the relationship between arsenic content of the glass beads and their retroreflective performance; an evaluation of analytical methods used to measure the total bead metal content; and an analysis of samples of glass bead and soil mixture from a glass bead storage site used to determine site-specific metal concentrations in the soil media. Mean arsenic content, measured using the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's KOH fusion digestion, in all the glass beads examined ranged from 11 ppm to 82 ppm, while mean lead content, measured using KOH fusion digestion, ranged from below quantification limit to 199 ppm. Total metal content measurements indicated a high amount of variability in the glass bead samples; most likely associated with the use of recycled glass feed during manufacturing. The relationship between the retroreflective performance and the arsenic content of the glass beads was analyzed and a weak but positive correlation was observed between the two factors. However, a more detailed study is required to evaluate the relationship between arsenic content and retroreflectivity. Different methods to evaluate the total metal content in glass beads were compared; it is recommended that any analytical method may be used, as long as the standard reference material is reproduced within the range of concentration expected in the glass beads. In the analysis of the field site samples of soil containing glass beads obtained from a glass bead storage and transfer facility, the mass content of beads in the soil varied from a mean of 19% to 78% depending on the location within the facility. However, a detailed analysis with larger number of samples must be performed to evaluate the effect of glass beads on the total arsenic content of the soil.

This master's thesis deals with alkaline battery characteristics and it has special consideration of nickel-cadmium cells. There are three main experimental parts in this paper. First one is concerned with positive electrode materials properties and is aimed to investigate impact of magnesium ions formed into nickel hydroxide electrode structure. Second part deals with battery charging/discharging and response measurement tool design. National Instruments hardware PXI modules for data acquisition was used and program in LabView environment was made. Last one is concerned with nickel-cadmium cell properties changes during increased temperature stressing. Investigation of cell self-charge changes during lithium hydroxide addition into electrolyte was made.

The task of master’s thesis was to perform optimalization process for preparing metal etching mask by electron beam litography and subsequent selective wet ething of silicon with crystalographic orientation (100). Further characterization of etched surface and fabricated structures was performed. In particular, attention was given to the morphology demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy and study changes of the optical properties of gold plasmonic antennas due to their undercut.
