Title: What motivates managers to work in local business?- A study of what managers in a municipal activities motivated by and what they believe is the reward of his work Authors: Emma Nilsson and Johanna Sjöholm, University of Halmstad, VT 2016. Supervisor: Tomas Berggren. Key words: Global job satisfaction, motivation, work motivation, reward, managers, municipal operations. Purpose and questions: The purpose of the study is to gain a better understanding of what managers in a local business in the public sector is motivated by and what they believe is the reward of their work. To achieve the purpose, we asked the questions:  What are the factors that motivate managers to work in municipal activities?  What do managers in municipal activities is the reward of the work?  What affects managers to remain in municipal activities? Method: The survey is based on a method combination. A quantitative part, where a questionnaire has been sent out to managers in municipal operations. There has also been a qualitative approach, with four managers interviewed in municipal operations. We have chosen to limit the investigation to the department, management, and corporate executives, because we did not want a large sample in the study, we need to take into account the time factor. Results and conclusion: The results showed that managers including justification of development, the variety of work and self-determination. The managers felt that the salary is a reward in the work but not the main reward for their job performance. The great reward of the work considers the heads be given the opportunity to develop other people in the business. The results also showed that including the managers to remain in work is the feeling that they have done something worthwhile for other citizens in the municipality.
