Simplified Model and Numerical Analysis of Multi-layered Piezoelectric Diaphragm

The validity of the dynamic analysis based on simplified plate model was investigated using of FE-codes ANSYS in the present paper. The simplified clamped multi-layered plate model was first verified by comparison with the exact model. The simply supported plate model was confirmed to be not a suitable model due to its large error as comparing with exact model. Influence of dimensions of laminar diaphragm on nature frequencies was studied. Deflection and voltage response driven by mechanical and electric loads were described. The optimized thickness ratio of PZT layer to SiO₂ and Si layers was given in the paper to obtain the best deflection export of actuator in design. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Three dimensional analysis of fibre reinforced polymer laminated composites

The thesis presents the structural behaviour of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) laminated composites based on 3D elasticity formulation and finite element modeling using Abaqus. This investigation into the performance of the laminate included subjecting it to various parameters i.e. different boundary conditions, material properties and loading conditions to examine the structural responses of deformation and stress. Both analytical and numerical investigations were performed to determine the stress and displacement distributions at any point of the laminates. Other investigative work undertaken in this study includes the numerical analysis of the effect of flexural deformation of the FRP strengthened RC slab. The formulation of 3D elasticity and enforced boundary conditions were applied to establish the state equation of the laminated composites. Transfer matrix and recursive solutions were then used to produce analytical solutions which satisfied all the boundary conditions throughout all the layers of the composites. These analytical solutions were then compared with numerical analysis through one of the commercial finite element analysis programs, Abaqus. Out of wide variety of element types available in the Abaqus element library, shells and solids elements are chosen to model the composites. From these FEM results, comparison can be made to the solution obtained from the analytical. The novel work and results presented in this thesis are the analysis of fully clamped laminated composite plates. The breakthrough results of fully clamped laminated composite plate can be used as a benchmark for further investigation. These analytical solutions were verified with FEM solutions which showed that only the solid element (C3D20) exhibited close results to the exact solutions. However, FEM gave poor results on the transverse shear stresses particularly at the boundary edges. As an application of the work above, it is noticed that the FEM results for the FRP strengthened RC slab, agreed well with the experimental work conducted in the laboratory. The flexural capacity of the RC slab showed significant increase, both at service and ultimate limit states, after FRP sheets were applied at the bottom surface of the slab. Given the established and developed programming codes, exact solutions of deflection and stresses can be determined for any reduced material properties, boundary and loading conditions, using Mathematica.

The focus of this thesis is to introduce a proof-of-concept illustrating the integration of cost and performance as primary design drivers for structural design. Of particular interest to the aerospace industry is laminated structural design, therefore an example problem of a laminated plate structure is selected. This problem presents two primary challenges: linking cost in as general a way as possible to the design variables, and dealing with the many discrete design options available in a laminated plate. The first issue is examined by using a theoretical cost model for advanced composite fabrication and using a Direct Operating Cost model. The second issue is addressed using a gradient based optimization algorithm and a Discrete Material Optimization (DMO) method, which is typically used in topology optimization of structures.

Analysis on the Deflection of Multilayered Ceramic Capacitors under High Temperature and Uniform Pressure

The complicated process may cause the internal defects of multi-layered ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) and result in the malfunctions. This work aims to investigate the deformations of MLCCs that composed of nearly a hundred of BaTiO3 and Ni electrode films interleaved and stacked due to high pressure at elevated temperature. This study focuses on theoretical and numerical analyses. Classical laminated plate theory, linear elastic assumptions and equilibrium equations were adopted. Associated with the texts by Timoshenko and practical manufacturing process, three types of boundary conditions were considered, such as all edges simple-supported, two opposite edges simple-supported and the other two free, and four edges free. Also, two more conditions need be added, including four fixed points at corners and the elastic foundation at bottom. The numerical simulation by finite element method (FEM) incorporated with software ANSYS was used to obtain the displacement field of MLCCs due to high pressure at elevated temperature. The MLCCs were divided into nine regions with suitably different boundary conditions. Compared with the numerical results the analytical solutions of nine regions were found satisfactorily acceptable, i.e., the errors were about 0.1% - 6.2% for the boundary conditions of four edges free and four corners fixed. The errors about 0.13% - 6.15% were also acceptable for the boundary conditions of two opposite edges simple-supported and the others free. However, the analytical solutions did not agree with the numerical results for the case of all the boundary conditions simple-supported. Finally the proposed theoretical methodology provides an analytical method alternatively, instead of FEM and ANSYS, to analyze a nearly hundred layered MLCCs.
