This research investigated the application of visual effects in real time in the narrative construction of spectacles with projection. Starting from studies to construct a device directed to the application of visual effects in real time, we wanted to locate how it is possible to make such application in three different modalities of spectacles, that fall within the scope of works realized by the artistic group RE(C)organize, of which we are part, being: a musical show, a performance spectacle (being that these must integrate in their projects the videoprojection) and a presentation of video mapping, that is totally or partially, realized in a live form. The option for these modalities was made according to the professional affinity of the group. We seek, through a theoretical and practical process, to identify the effects that evidence a narrative discourse, in a symbolic and / or metaphorical way, as well as to detect those who had the potential to meet the demands of the live show, which we believe are: the urgency (in the sense that the work must happen in that unique instant) and the evidence (in the sense of characterizing the specific moment in a clear way) - which is discussed in detail throughout this project / Resumen: Esta investigación estudió la aplicación de los efectos visuales en tiempo real en la construcción narrativa de espectáculos con proyección. 'Limelights and shadows' : popular and visual culture in South West England, 1880-1914Leveridge, Rosalind Claire January 2011 (has links)
The late nineteenth century and early twentieth century were an important period for popular shows involving the moving and projected image, yet there have been few sustained studies that have mapped optical entertainments systematically outside London or that have analysed the influence of such shows on early film exhibition. This thesis has profiled the popular and visual culture of five contrasting South West locations during this period, tracing the development and distribution of magic lantern shows and dioramas as well as identifying the local and touring companies who hosted film on its arrival in the region. Using the local press, the trade press, contemporary publications and ephemera, this thesis has reconstructed an account of local shows and culture which not only deepens our understanding of popular visual entertainments in regional contexts, but which also serves to stand as a comparison to other established urban and metropolitan paradigms and thus to contribute to a wider and more complex national picture. It advances the argument for a broader classification of such shows in response to local findings and for a more nuanced and detailed appraisal and understanding of their provenance and profiles, and the role film played within them. In addition, this thesis interrogates early film exhibition in these resorts following the move to fixed-venue cinemas in the late 1900s and investigates the arrival of cinema and its emergence as a fledgling industry in the region. It offers an overview of investment into the business locally and evidences the varied set of partnerships and individuals responsible for financing the first cinemas here. Responses to the new technologies and local modifications to business models for cinemas and film exhibition are analysed and their diversity examined. Managerial relationships with communities are evidenced as an important contributory factor to the success of many local cinemas, permitting adaptations to the needs of patrons which boosted audiences and increased revenue. The variety of local interpretations of cinema discovered here reflects the social and cultural diversity of these selected sites, and is a key finding of this thesis.

AvaliaÃÃo tÃcnico-financeira de um cultivo da ostra-do-mangue, Crassostrea brasiliana (Lamarck, 1818), na comunidade de Graciosa, MunicÃpio de TaperoÃ, Bahia / The oyster stands out as an aquatic resource of great economic and social interest for the Southern Bahia subregion because of its present relevant natural and geographical conditions for establishment of enterprises of this nature. This research work aims to analyze the technical and financial aspects of cultivating the mangrove oyster, Crassostrea brasiliana (Lamarck, 1818), in the community of Graciosa, TaperoÃ, Bahia State, and to create financial controls for fully efficient management of household productive enterprises. This is justified by the fact that they are incipient and scarce economic and financial information that provide the correct development of such activities. The methodology used in this study drew on a descriptive exploratory study with a technical analysis of qualitative and quantitative approach, based on weekly visits in situ techniques, application of a semi-structured questionnaires carried out from January to December, 2013, through interviews with leaders of the oyster farming system. The production system adopted is floating through the use of long-line and lanterns, employing low-tech and seed oysters are collected at the site of cultivation itself, with an average size of 2 Â 0.5 cm. The cultivation under the current conditions shows no economic viability as highlighted by the poor estimated financial indices. It has low profitability and profitability, respectively 6.93% and 3.17 %, with the selling price of oysters at R$ 193.85 per thousand. The profit only happens when at least 92.55 % of oysters are marketed. The months of the year 2013 which had higher billings were January, November and December, with a fall in trade of oysters in the months of greater rainfall in the studied subregion being noticed. Financial viability will be seen when the selling price should reach R$ 250,00 per thousand and total investment return goes up on 6.1 years.Marcel Philippe Gerard Monte Gradvohl 10 June 2014 (has links)

‘Little houses lovable’: The portrayal of houses and homes in selected novels by L.M. MontgomeryVan Heerden, Jeanne-Marie January 2017 (has links)
Houses in literature are an important signifier, and for Canadian author L.M. Montgomery, places and especially houses were deeply meaningful. This study explores the portrayal of houses and homes in a selection of L.M. Montgomery’s novels: Anne of Green Gables (1908), Anne of Avonlea (1909), Anne of the Island (1915), Anne’s House of Dreams (1917), Emily of New Moon (1923), The Blue Castle (1926), Emily Climbs (1927), Emily’s Quest (1928), A Tangled Web (1931), Pat of Silver Bush (1933), Mistress Pat (1935), Anne of Windy Willows (1936), and Jane of Lantern Hill (1937). Montgomery’s own attachment to houses and places is evident from The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery, Volumes 1-5 (1985-2004), Mary Rubio’s biography, Lucy Maud Montgomery: The Gift of Wings (2008) and Montgomery’s letters, My Dear Mr. M: Letters to G.B. MacMillan from L.M. Montgomery (1980). This study argues that, given Montgomery’s emphasis on the physical environment of her own life, the environment which surrounds the characters of her novels is equally important for deciphering meanings conveyed in her books. Therefore, the study attempts to ascertain what houses in Montgomery’s fiction communicate, drawing on theories of place attachment and emotional relationships with places to explain the significance of the houses in these novels and Montgomery’s depiction of them and their relation to the characters. Research on place attachment and the meaning of home helps to clarify the significance of houses in these novels. Prior analysis of Montgomery’s novels is also taken into account, as well as studies on the house in other fiction. The study shows that the houses in Montgomery’s fiction often function as a symbol for the self. They also facilitate or prevent actions or events which involve the characters, and fulfil the needs of the characters, whether these needs be physical or emotional. I use these functions as an interpretive lens through which I attempt to illuminate aspects of Montgomery’s depiction of houses in these novels as dream houses, haunted houses, houses of nostalgia or escape. Montgomery uses houses to situate the characters in her novels, both physically and emotionally. Close analysis of the passages relating to houses in these novels reveals the depth of detail, the imagery and symbolism, and Montgomery’s careful selection of words and phrases. / Dissertation (MA (English))--University of Pretoria, 2017. / English / MA (English) / Unrestricted

Transcriptome-Wide Methods for functional and Structural Annotation of Long Non-Coding RNAsDaulatabad, Swapna Vidhur 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Non-coding RNAs across the genome have been associated with various biological processes, ranging from regulation of splicing to remodeling of chromatin. Amongst the repertoire of non-coding sequences lies a critical species of RNAs called long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). LncRNAs significantly contribute to a large spectrum of human phenotypes, including cancers, Heart failure, Diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. This dissertation emphasizes the need to characterize the functional role of lncRNAs to improve our understanding of human diseases. This work consolidates a resource from multiple computational genomics and natural language processing-based approaches to advance our ability to functionally annotate hundreds of lncRNAs and their interactions, providing a one-stop lncRNA functional annotation and dynamic interaction network and multi-facet omics data visualization platform.
RNA interactions are vital in various cellular processes, from transcription to RNA processing. These interactions dictate the functional scope of the RNA. However, the multifaceted functional nature of RNA stems from its ability to form secondary structures. Therefore, this work establishes a computational method to characterize RNA secondary structure by integrating SHAPE-seq and long-read sequencing to enhance further our understanding of RNA structure in modulating the post-transcriptional regulatory processes and deciphering the influence at several layers of biological features, ranging from structure composition to consequent protein occupancy.
This study will potentially impact the research community by providing methods, web interfaces, and computational pipelines, improving our functional understanding of long non-coding RNAs. This work also provides novel integration methods of technologies like Oxford Nanopore-based long-read sequencing, RNA structure-probing methods, and machine learning. The approaches developed in this dissertation are scalable and adaptable to investigate further the functional and regulatory role of RNA and its structure. Overall, this study accelerates the development of RNA-based diagnostics and the identification of therapeutic targets in human disease.

Lantern's DiaryTan, Wei Zhong 10 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
My MFA project titled, “Lantern's Diary” is a synergy of colors, tactile experiences, and reflections on change. The artwork is based on cultural influences. The physical form of the lantern is a metaphor of culture identity—in Eastern culture, paper has been used in architecture, furniture, clothing, funerals, writing materials, and lanterns. Its function as a material is to fulfill the necessity of daily life and ceremonial rituals. Hence, paper plays an important role in the Eastern society. The color spectrum representing “Change” corresponds with the western system of color organization. The gallery space plays a spatial aesthetic role in guiding one's interpretative journey through the artwork. The cooler colors were placed closer to the entrance of the gallery. Then the warmer colors were arranged and set in the furthest end of the left-hand corner of the gallery. As a result, the warmer colors would draw the viewers to walk around to the other end of the exhibit, signifying the importance of looking on the bright side of things as we go through life changes, with bright hope at the end. I was interested in the thinking and production process. I sketched a lot in my sketchbook and made some prototypes as references. The lanterns were made from reeds and handmade paper. Each of the thirty lanterns is about seven to eight feet tall and hangs from the ceiling of the gallery. The structural form of each lantern may vary a little in detail, but they are all based on the same design concept—a chrysalis. Reeds, commonly used in basket weaving were used to make the skeleton structure of the lanterns. Understanding the profound process of making the lanterns is important, as it mirrors us making sense of changes in our lives as they unfold.

Optical Design Study of a High-Resolution Spectrograph Utilizing Photonic Lanterns for a Large Fiber Array TelescopeD'Alo, Richard 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Large area fiber array telescopes are a relatively modern development in the long history of telescope design and effectively create a single large equivalent aperture by combining many smaller unit telescopes at a fraction of the cost. In this study a spectrograph optical design is demonstrated that utilizes photonic lanterns in the input fiber feed for the Large Fiber Array Spectroscopic Telescope (LFAST) design concept, where photonic lanterns provide a simplified approach to the fiber feed originally proposed for LFAST. Conservation of etendue is applied to derive the relationship between slit size and photonic lantern ratio, and classical echelle spectrograph designs are explored. A high-resolution spectrograph for LFAST is shown to not be feasible due to the large number of input fibers that result in a large required cross-dispersion within the constraint of practical and cost-effective optical component sizes. An alternative approach of splitting the slit length and replicating spectrographs is explored, and an optimal choice of four spectrographs with a photonic lantern ration of four is determined. Even with this approach, detailed spectrograph component designs show that the spectrograph does not meet the resolution requirements and is fundamentally limited by design constraints imposed by component sizes. Alternative layouts and design decisions to improve optical performance are surveyed for future design research, and include white pupil optics, echelle grating design considerations, spectral arm splitting, and use of reflective and catadioptric systems with aspheric surfaces. While these show promise for improving the spectrograph performance, the design is demonstrated to still be challenging and will likely require innovative approaches to meet the high-resolution design goals.
