Primo Levi: uma leitura dos silêncios em É isto um homem? / Primo Levi: reading the silences in If this is a man

Serrano, Rebeca Fernanda Gasparini 09 September 2019 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the different kinds of silence in the book If this is a man, by Primo Levi. The writings about the Shoah carry different kinds of silence. However, besides being an impossibility, silence can be a key to understand the text, through the perspective of authors like Sergio Kovadloff, Renato Lessa and Primo Levi.

Structuralism and "The Story of Asdiwal"

McLaren, Darcee L. 09 1900 (has links)

This thesis shows that the criticisms of Levi-Strauss' analysis, entitled "The Story of Asdiwal", arise out of the careless application of structuralist principles on the part of Levi-Strauss. They are not due to problems inherent in structuralism itself. To further this point, the story of Asdiwal is re-analyzed using a rigourous application of structuralism which avoids the mistakes made by Levi-Strauss. That is, it takes all the versions into account, considers the ethnographic material in detail, and uses those ethnographic sources with attention to focus and method of collection. The result is an analysis which shows the theme of the story of Asdiwal to be rivalry while the basic binary opposition is between competition and cooperation and not between the matriline and the patriline as Levi-Strauss supposed.
/ Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

La lingua in Primo Levi /

Thorne, Alison, 1978- January 2003 (has links)
This thesis discusses the role of language in Primo Levi's Se questo e un uomo and La tregua. On the basis of Levi's conviction that language and communication are an essential part of civilized human existence, such critics as Brian Cliff, Patricia Sayre and Linnea Vacca have focused on the role of language in the destruction of the human being in concentration camps, while Valerio Ferme and Fabio Girelli-Carasi have also underlined the power of language to regenerate a sense of humanity in Auschwitz and after. This paper attempts to integrate these two approaches to the early work of Primo Levi, and illustrates the process of linguistic destruction in Auschwitz on the one hand, and the subsequent rebirth of communication both within Auschwitz and on Levi's long journey home, on the other. Levi's attention to language and communication provides a focus which separates his work from that of other witnesses and provides a unique vantage point from which to view his Auschwitz experience.
