LightPulse, breathing through light

Through a personal decision to create and promote psychological states of calm, relaxation, and transcendence, this project was born to study and research light, art, and health to find points in common to create an experience focused on health care spaces, specifically cancer facilities. This exploration aims to improve or enhance the well-being of users in waiting rooms to some extent through light. Based on the literature review, a dynamic and immersive experience with light was developed within a space simulating waiting rooms in hospitals. It was tested with 14 participants exposed to the experience for ten minutes. This thesis concludes that the dynamism in light is necessary to create engagement on the user. This dynamism simultaneously changing rhythmically in time generates a feeling of calmness and relaxation on the participants, perceived as a positive experience within the function of the space and the overall wellbeing of the users.

Bring Light to Gaza. An exploration of solar and ecologically-sensitive light programs for the Deir al-Balah refugee camp

In Gaza, daily blackouts have lasted for over eleven years. Until recently, Palestinian families have received only four hours of power each day. Since Israel’s withdrawal from the region in 2005, the political discourse around the Right of Return has forced refugees to live in terrible conditions and darkness. The fear was that any transformation of the camps will bring about an integration of the refugee community with the local environment and thus any improvements to Gaza’s infrastructure and housing was seen as a direct erosion of the Right of Return. Can bringing light to Gaza transcend this boundary of temporality and restore hope to this impoverished community? With recent solar lighting ideas emerging to help solve Gaza’s energy shortage by solar energy companies such as SunBox and LittleSun, I plan to develop a solar urban lighting project for Gaza’s smallest refugee camp - Deir al-Balah (DEB) - to help improve security at night for residents and provide the community with opportunities to socialise in public common areas. In response to an ‘Improvement Plan’ conducted by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in 2017, which identifies DEB camp’s limited access to electricity and street lighting, I’d like to explore how a solar and ecologically-sensitive lighting programs can improve Gazan’s daily lives, by bringing clean, reliable and affordable energy access.

Sistemas fotovoltaicos e a experiência do Programa Luz para Todos em São Paulo / Photovoltaic systems and the experience of Light for All Program in the State of São Paulo.

Esta tese tem como objetivo analisar as políticas públicas de universalização do atendimento de eletricidade, por meio de sistemas fotovoltaicos, em algumas comunidades isoladas e propor procedimentos de aprimoramento. A pesquisa de campo foi baseada em dados qualitativos através de estudo de caso. O trabalho deu-se em três comunidades tradicionais de Ilhabela-SP, onde cem domicílios receberam sistemas capazes de fornecer 30 kWh mensais - SIGFI 30 -, em 2012. cujo financiamento foi pelo Programa Luz para Todos. Foram identificados aspectos facilitadores e barreiras para a adoção dos sistemas fotovoltaicos nessas comunidades. São apresentadas proposições para aprimoramento. O trabalho conclui que nas comunidades de Ilhabela não foi ainda garantida a consecução plena dos objetivos da política pública de poder suprir as necessidades básicas de iluminação, comunicação e refrigeração, notadamente, porque não havia geladeiras; os sistemas fotovoltaicos e a luz elétrica foram muito bem recebidos e foi constatada melhoria da qualidade de vida. / This thesis aims at analyzing public policy of electricity service universalization, by means of photovoltaic systems, in some isolated communities, as well as suggesting improvement procedures. The field research was based on qualitative data collected through case study. The work was performed in three traditional communities in Ilhabela-SP, where a hundred of households received systems capable of supplying monthly 30 kWh SIGFI 30 -, in 2012 which was financed by Light for All Program. Facilitator aspects and barriers for the adoption of the photovoltaic systems in these communities were identified. Suggestions for improvement have been presented. As a result, it is possible to conclude that a plain achievement of the public policy aimed at supplying the basic needs for illumination, communication and refrigeration in those Ilhabela communities, hasnt yet been guaranteed due to the absence of refrigerator. Photovoltaic systems and electricity were well accepted ant it was observed an improvement of quality of life.

Achieving Universal Access to Electricity through Decentralized Renewable Energy Technologies in Minas Gerais, Brazil

Brazil started the Luz Para Todos (Light for all - LPT) program in 2003 aiming at universalization of electricity access in the country. The program uses three technological solutions to reach this goal: grid extension, decentralized power generation with isolated grids and stand-alone systems. This master thesis analyzes the role of decentralized renewable energy technologies in the Luz Para Todos program in the state of Minas Gerais. The factors that lead to the use of such technologies in the specific case of CEMIG (Energy Company of Minas Gerais) are considered. The study showed that regulatory framework and energy policy mechanisms are the most important determinants of the method of attendance in rural electrification. It is concluded that decentralized renewable energy technologies emerge as a strong alternative when it is not technologically and/or financially feasible to extend the grid.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo de caso a respeito das alterações que ocorreram em uma comunidade tradicional quilombola, localizada no Estado do Pará, no município de Oeiras do Pará, denominada Igarapé Preto, a partir da implantação do Programa Luz para Todos, o qual se constituiu em um indicador de desenvolvimento e integração nacional, que além da energia elétrica, permitiu também o acesso a cidadania, por meio de serviços, como: saúde, educação e saneamento básico às famílias que neste local residem. Justifica-se por fazer uma análise das mudanças provocadas pelo programa que alteraram o modo de vida local, permitindo aos moradores adotar novos comportamentos, que corresponderam às necessidades do momento histórico que vivenciavam, considerando a organização e participação que influenciaram nas tomadas de decisões, objetivando a implantação de melhorias. Teve como objetivos a tarefa de investigar as mudanças ocorridas, verificando a relação das famílias com o meio ambiente antes e depois da chegada da energia elétrica, identificando e caracterizando as mudanças de ordem econômica, social, cultural e ambiental que ocorreram na comunidade partir da chegada de energia elétrica e que contribuíram para mudanças na qualidade de vida da população. Pretendendo, dessa forma, gerar conhecimentos novos e úteis para o avanço da ciência sem uma aplicação prática prevista. / This paper presents a case study of changes occurring in a traditional maroon, located in Para State, in the municipality of Oeiras do Pará, called Igarapé Preto, from the implementation of the "Light for Everyone", which was constituted as an indicator of development and national integration, which in addition to electric power also allowed access to citizenship, through services such as health, education and sanitation to families who reside in this location. Justified by analyzing the changes caused by the program that changed the local way of life, allowing residents to adopt new behaviors, which corresponded to the needs of the historic moment experienced, considering the organization and participation that influenced the decision-making, aiming the implementation of improvements. Aimed to the task of investigating the changes, verifying the relationship of family environment before and after the arrival of electricity by identifying and characterizing the changes of economic, social, and cultural environment that occurred in the community from the arrival power and contributed to changes in the quality of life. Intending thereby to generate new and useful knowledge for the advancement of science without practical application envisaged.

The right light at the right time for bipolar patients. An exploratory study of light environments for patients with bipolar disease in behavioral health clinics

Research has showed that different light scenarios have a profound effect on hospitalized bipolar patients. Different light situations decrease the hospital stay for patients during both manic and depressive episodes. Nevertheless, a field study carried out during this thesis work of two arbitrary patient rooms in Swedish behavioral health clinics showed no incorporation of this knowledge in the light design of the rooms. Both patient rooms had insufficient light levels both in terms of circadian recommendations and perceived brightness. Hence this thesis suggests an improved light design for patient rooms housing bipolar patients. The basis of the improved design is to incorporate a dynamic, circadian lighting that varies depending on the patient's need and diagnosed episode.
