Communicative or language competence refers to the capacity of persons to select, recognise and organise the language variety appropriate to the occasion, situation and subject matter at hand. Language competency assists learners to construct and integrate acquired information to one's own understanding. It is therefore pivotal to encourage education reforms through core knowledge that building a strong oral language and early development could result in future academic success. This study examined the influence of language competence on the academic achievement of Grade 12 learners in selected schools of the Capricorn District (Limpopo Province in South Africa). The purpose of this study was to establish the challenges that learners and educators experience in communicating for teaching and learning purposes. The study also investigated the language factors that influence their academic achievement.

The results of a homestead survey and the trapping of rodents in dwellings, home gardens and fields confirmed the severity of the rodent problem in the village, which was caused by Rattus rattus, Mus musculus, Mus minutoides, Mastomys coucha and Rhabdomys pumilio.

The geology and structure of the Bushveld Complex metamorphic aureole in the Olifants River area.

The contact metamorphic aureole of the Rustenburg Layered Suite of the Bushveld Complex extends to a depth of over 5 km into the underlying mainly argillaceous Pretoria Group. When compared to other parts of the metamorphic aureole, the Olifants River area is unique in that it is characterised by a high degree of syn-Bushveld Complex deformation and very coarse grained pelitic assemblages. This is believed to have resulted from a combination of greater magma thickness, a deeper emplacement depth and a high degree of subsidence related deformation that was focused along the Thabazimbi-Murchison Lineament. This area also contains a laterally extensive and deformed quartz-feldspar porphyry sill, the Roodekrans Complex that is shown to represent a hypabyssal equivalent of the volcanic Rooiberg Group. There are three main metamorphic zones. A wide andalusite zone dominated by staurolite, garnet and cordierite assemblages. This is followed by a narrow fibrolite zone without staurolite, and a wide inner aureole of migmatite. The migmatite zone is characterised by garnet-cordierite-aluminosilicate assemblages with corundum, spinel and orthopyroxene assemblages at the highest grades. Metamorphic pressure and temperature estimates indicate pressures of between 3 kb and 4 kb in the lower part of the andalusite zone at temperatures of approximately 550°C. Porphyroblast-matrix relationships reveal a close link between deformation and metamorphism resulting in a spectrum of textural relationships developed as a result of inhomogeneous strain. Porphyroblasts in low strain domains preserve textures of “static type" growth whereas syntectonic textures are found in foliated rocks. Pre-tectonic porphyroblasts in many foliated domains indicate that deformation outlasted porphyroblast growth and increased in intensity and extent with time. Retrograde porphyroblasts are post-tectonic. Evidence is presented for both rotation and non-rotation of porphyroblasts in relation to geographical coordinates during extensional top-to-south, down-dip shear in the floor. The unique structural setting in this area triggered the growth of large diapiric structures in the floor of the Rustenburg Layered Suite that are preserved as periclinal folds on the margin and within the northeastern Bushveld Complex. Extreme gravitational loading and heating of the floor by a thickness of up to 8 km of mafic magma resulted in the generation of evenly spaced, up to 7 km diameter wall-rock diapirs that penetrated the overlying magma chamber. Diapiric deformation is restricted to rocks above a decollement zone that is developed along competency contrasts and corresponds approximately with the 550 °C peak metamorphic isotherm. Strongly lineated, boudinaged and foliated rocks are developed in the interpericlinal domains between adjacent periclines. Migmatites in these domains are characterised by conjugate extensional ductile shears and associated asymmetrical boudinage suggesting bulk deformation by pure shear processes. The extension lineation was produced by lateral extension along flow lines directed toward dome culminations. Each of the four diapiric periclines is cut by a different erosional section enabling reconstruction of a typical diapir geometry. At the highest structural levels, periclines have bulbous shapes with overturned limb geometries forming overhangs. The surrounding layered igneous rocks are locally deformed into a series of outward verging folds that define a broad rim syncline. Deformation within the pericline cores is represented by constrictional deformation that produced radial curtain-type folds with steeply plunging lineations and concentrically orientated folds in the outer shell. Diapirism is closely linked to magma emplacement mechanisms. Floor folds in the country rocks were initiated in the interfinger areas of a fingered intrusion. With further magma additions and the coalescence of intrusion fingers into a single sheet, interfinger folds matured into large diapiric periclines which rose to the upper levels of the magma chamber. Strain rates estimated from strain analyses, pericline geometry and model cooling calculations are in the order of 10-14 S-1, corresponding to diapiric uplift rates of 0.6 cm/yr. Diapirism is broadly compatible with a N-S extension in the Olifants River area during emplacement of the Rustenburg Layered Suite. On a regional scale, this is indicated by existence of a major EW dyke swarm that coincides with the long axis of the Bushveld Complex. The accommodation of the Bushveld Complex into the Kaapvaal Craton was facilitated by a combination of craton-wide extension that accompanied plume related magmatic underplating, and loading of the Bushveld Complex. Isostatic adjustment in response to Bushveld Complex subsidence resulted in further development of large basement domes around the perimeter of the Bushveld Complex. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1998.

Transport, gender and agricultural development : a case study of the Capricorn District Limpopo Province South Africa.

Agricultural development, in Africa is seen as a vital tool for combating poverty in many households. In this thesis, agricultural development is thus seen as one of the ways in which the Millennium Development Goals 1 & 3 can be achieved. Moreover, the researcher hopes to show the link between transport and the possibilities of socio-economic development in the agricultural sector if and when transportation is facilitated. Furthermore, the need for gender equality and women’s empowerment will be emphasized in agricultural activities, particularly labour. The study draws from two women-led projects namely, the Lahlapapadi Goat Project and Kwadikwaneng Nursery in the Capricorn District of Limpopo, South Africa. To achieve the objects of this enterprise, the following tasks are undertaken. Firstly, the role of transport in women-led projects is investigated and described, particularly as regards to its possible impact on women lives. Secondly, reasons as to why women despite playing a large role in agricultural production receive very limited recognition. And thirdly, an assessment as to whether women receive adequate support from both the agricultural and transport departments for their agricultural activities is conducted. The broader context of historical ideologies around which gender roles in society are shaped will also be examined with a particular emphasis on transportation so as to show the extent to which such ideologies pose a threat to the development of women-led agricultural projects. To realize the broader objective and its underlying tasks, the researcher adopted qualitative feminist methodologies. These employ in-depth interviews, focus group discussions in conjunction with visual techniques involving photography and videography. The study’s findings revealed that women are largely not recognized for their labour due to socio-cultural factors, such as patriarchy and subsequent gender stereotyping, that force women to continue in their traditional household roles. Sedimentology of the Karoo Supergroup in the Tuli Basin (Limpompo River area, South Africa)

The sedimentary rocks of the Karoo Supergroup in the Tuli Basin (South Africa) consist of various terrigenous clastic and chemical deposits (parabreccias, conglo-breccias, conglomerates, sandstones, fine-grained sediments, calcretes and silc~etes). Four stratigraphic units were identified: the Basal, Middle and· Upper Units, and the CI~rens Formation. The palaeo-environmental reconstructions of the four stratigraphic units are based on evidence provided by primary sedimentary structures, palaeo-flow measurements, clast size/shape analysis, petrographic studies, palaeontological findings, borehole data and stratigraphic relations. The facies associations of the Basal Unit are interpreted as colluvial fan and low sinuosity, braid~d river channel with coal-bearing overbank and thaw-lake deposits. The interpreted depositional environment implies a cold climate, non-glacial subarctic fluvio-Iacustrine system. The current indicators of the palaeo-river system suggest flow direction from ENE to WSW. The lithologies of the Basal Unit are very similar to the deposits of the fluvial interval in the Vryheid Formation (Ecca Group) of the main Karoo Basin. There is no indubitable evidence for glacial activity (e.g. striated pavements or clasts, varvites, etc.), therefore the presence of unequivocal Dwyka Group correlatives in the Tuli Basin remains uncertain. The sedimentary structures and palaeo-current analysis indicate that the beds of the Middle Unit were deposited by an ancient river system flowing in a north-northwesterly direction. A lack of good quality exposures did not allow the reconstruction of the fluvial style, but the available data indicate a high-energy, perhaps braided fluvial system. The lack of bio- and chronostr~~igraphic control hampers precise correlation and enables only the lithocorrelation of the Middle Unit with other braided river systems either in the Beaufort Group or in the Molteno Formation of the main Karoo Basin. The depositional environment of the Upper Unit is interpreted as a low-sinuosity, ephemeral stream system with calcretes and silcretes in the dinosaur-inhabited overbank area. During the deposition of the unit, the climate was semi-arid with sparse precipitation resulting -iFlhighmagnitude, low-frequency devastating flash floods. The sediments were built out from a distant northwesterly source to the southeast. The unambiguous correspondence between the Upper Unit and the Elliot Formation (main Karoo Basin) is provided by lithological similarities and prosauropod dinosaurs remains. The palaeo-geographic picture of the Clarens Fonnation indicates a westerly windsdominated erg environment with migrating transverse dune types. The ephemeral stream deposits, fossil wood and trace fossils are only present in the lower part of the Formation, indicating that the wet-desert conditions were progressively replaced by dry-desert conditions. Based on lithological and palaeontological evidence, the Formation correlates with the Clarens Formation in the main Karoo Basin. At this stage, it remains difficult to establish the exact cause of the regional palaeo-slope changes during the deposition of the Karoo Supergroup in the Tuli Basin. It is probable that foreland system tectonics, which affected the lower part of the Supergroup (Basal Unit and Middle Unit?), were replaced by incipient continental extension and rift related tectonic movements in the Middle and Upper Units, and Clarens Formation.

The role of transformational school leadership in meeting the challenges facing primary schools in Limpopo

The motive for conducting this study was to determine the extent in which aspects of transformational leadership identified during literature study are practiced in the sampled primary schools in Limpopo. The study was divided into seven interlinked chapters. Chapter one introduced the investigation. Chapter two presented the definition and description of the notion transformational leadership and its five constituting elements, namely shared vision, commitment, motivation, job satisfaction and participative decision-making. A transformational leadership model was also presented in chapter two. Chapter three focused on the primary education systems of Republic of South Africa and the three selected Southern African Development Community member states, namely Malawi, Lesotho and Namibia. The discussion focused on the structure, organization, objectives and the challenges facing each SADC member state. Chapter three further identified the challenges facing primary schools in Limpopo and compared these to the challenges of the three selected SADC member states. The details of the research design and methodology were presented in chapter four. The empirical study took a two-pronged approach. Phase one of the empirical study was conducted through the administration of questionnaires to sampled principals and educators. In the second phase, sampled principals, educators and circuit managers were interviewed. The empirical study was intended to give answers to the following research questions:  To what extent are primary school principals as leaders involved in: • initiating visions that are shared and owned by other role players? • making sure that educators remain committed to their profession? • ensuring that educators are kept motivated? • ensuring that educators remain satisfied in their profession?  To what extent do principals involve other role players in the decision-making processes? iv In addition to that, the following research hypothesis was tested: • There is a significant relationship (in terms of descriptive statistics) between identified leadership emphasis in Limpopo primary schools and the key features of transformational leadership. And conversely the null hypothesis tested was: • There is no significant relationship (in terms of descriptive statistics) between identified leadership emphasis in Limpopo primary schools and the key features of transformational leadership. In phase one, data was quantitatively collected through questionnaires (principals and educators). Data was further gathered through semi-structured interviews and observation in phase two. To give a clear and a logical presentation of the data analysis and interpretation, both quantitative and qualitative data were presented separately in chapters five and six. This study produced the following findings: The majority of primary school principals do: • involve other role players in the development of their school visions. • ensure that educators are committed to their responsibilities. • ensure that educators remain motivated. • ensure that educators are job satisfied. • create opportunities wherein role players are involved in decision-making processes. The views of respondents from the survey data (both principals and educators) indicated that there is a significant relationship (in terms of descriptive statistics) between identified leadership emphasis in Limpopo primary schools and the key features of transformational leadership. Based on the findings above, the conclusion deduced was that the majority of primary school principals exhibit transformational leadership attributes. / Education Studies / D. Ed. Attaining a system of quality teaching and learning through effective teacher evaluation in selected schools in Limpopo Province

This research investigated the role of teacher evaluation in enhancing quality teaching and learning and the extent to which teacher evaluation in Bushbuckridge schools enhances the quality of teaching and learning. It also set out to investigate how the teachers (CS1, HODs, deputy principals and principals) perceived the evaluation system to which they were subjected. The researcher used a qualitative research approach and data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews from a convenient, comprehensive and purposive sample. The sample consisted of twenty-six teachers from three schools in the Dwarsloop Circuit. These schools were chosen purposely on the grounds that all the teachers in these schools had been evaluated successfully. In addition, these schools were within easy reach of the researcher and she also knew most of the respondents. All the interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was carried out simultaneously with the data collection process. Each interview was transcribed and labelled as soon as it was finished. The researcher used a process called coding during data analysis. By means of this process, data was compiled, labelled, separated and organised into categories and sub-categories. Subsequently, these categories formed the basis upon which the findings were made. Among several other findings, it emerged that teacher evaluation enables the educator to create a climate that supports quality teaching and learning, leads to better lesson preparation and presentation in addition to enabling better learner assessment. Respondents also held the view that evaluation encourages teachers’ professional development. Despite these findings, the respondents indicated that in their specific cases, evaluation did not lead to the desired results due to a number of reasons that included incompetent evaluators and an inflexible and unfair evaluation system.
