Evaluation of the MEC's poverty-alleviation programme in the Waterberg District of the Limpopo Province

Background: In 2003, the Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development introduced a system to train students from poor families as auxiliary nurses as a poverty-alleviation strategy in the province. The programme was aimed at targeting the needy: those who depended on social grants for a living, were orphaned or who headed a family. Five years have passed but no formal evaluation has been done to estimate the impact of the programme. Objective: To evaluate the self-reported impact of auxiliary nursing training of youth from poor families in the Waterberg District on alleviation of their poverty Methodology: A cross-sectional study design using an anonymous structured questionnaire. The study population included 200 auxiliary nurses trained through the programme from 2003 to date. Results: This research found conclusive evidence that the poverty alleviation project in the Limpopo Province has significantly improved the economic conditions of the beneficiaries such as number of rooms in their houses, type of houses, type of floors, refuse collection, indoor water supply, indoor flash toilet, household assets, access to water and wood, number of meals, transport and domestic workers. This study also found positive changes in family income, bank and other accounts. This study shows significant changes in asset indicator scores after respondents had joined the programme. Conclusion: This is the first study to systematically evaluate a poverty alleviation programme in South Africa. Hopefully, both the Department of Finance and the Department of Health and Social Development in the Limpopo Province would utilise the findings of this study to review and to improve other poverty alleviation programmes in the Waterberg District and the Province.

Methodology of presenting analytical quality assurance courses for medical technologists

A survey on the quality of service provided by state laboratories in the Limpopo Province was conducted during the period 2000 2002. The focus was on accuracy and precision. The service quality evaluation was based on standard deviation index, % deviation and % clinically rejectable results. The scores obtained were evaluated in terms of internationally pre determined cut off limits. Education and training were cited by 97% of the interviewees as the major contributory factors to the poor performance. Subsequent to the discussion, a course in quality assurance was designed, presented and evaluated, as above. Although the post intervention performance results did not meet the international performance standard at the given time yet; they were much closer to norm and significantly better than the pre course performance results. The conclusion is that newly designed course will contribute in reaching the international cut off standard for clinical laborato ries.

Relationship between breeding activity and rainfall for Swainson’s Spurfowl, Pternistis swainsonii, within southern Africa, with specific reference to the Springbok Flats, Limpopo Province, South Africa

We collated the literature available on the breeding activity of the Swainson’s Spurfowl Pternistis swainsonii and made use of reliable unpublished reports, nest record cards and field observations within the Springbok Flats, Limpopo Province, South Africa to establish breeding seasons and pairing behaviour. The onset of breeding (egg laying) is closely associated with rainfall, with male gonad development, population density and covey size (pairing behaviour), all correlated with rainfall. Peak breeding activity is from January–April in South Africa, February–May in Zimbabwe and March–June in Botswana. Egg laying has been recorded in all months and sporadic egg laying in the winter months is most likely the result of isolated rainfall. Mean clutch size is 5.2 eggs/hen (n = 140) with an incubation period of 23 days and brood hatching success and chick survival of 69.4% over the southern African sub-region. Current hunting seasons within Limpopo Province are in line with the recommended hunting season for this region and should remain unchanged: 15 June–30 September. The success of this phasianid can be attributed to its extended breeding season, high survival rate of hatchlings and the potential of birds to breed within their first year.

The geology and structure of the Bushveld Complex metamorphic aureole in the Olifants River area.

The contact metamorphic aureole of the Rustenburg Layered Suite of the Bushveld Complex extends to a depth of over 5 km into the underlying mainly argillaceous Pretoria Group. When compared to other parts of the metamorphic aureole, the Olifants River area is unique in that it is characterised by a high degree of syn-Bushveld Complex deformation and very coarse grained pelitic assemblages. This is believed to have resulted from a combination of greater magma thickness, a deeper emplacement depth and a high degree of subsidence related deformation that was focused along the Thabazimbi-Murchison Lineament. This area also contains a laterally extensive and deformed quartz-feldspar porphyry sill, the Roodekrans Complex that is shown to represent a hypabyssal equivalent of the volcanic Rooiberg Group. There are three main metamorphic zones. A wide andalusite zone dominated by staurolite, garnet and cordierite assemblages. This is followed by a narrow fibrolite zone without staurolite, and a wide inner aureole of migmatite. The migmatite zone is characterised by garnet-cordierite-aluminosilicate assemblages with corundum, spinel and orthopyroxene assemblages at the highest grades. Metamorphic pressure and temperature estimates indicate pressures of between 3 kb and 4 kb in the lower part of the andalusite zone at temperatures of approximately 550°C. Porphyroblast-matrix relationships reveal a close link between deformation and metamorphism resulting in a spectrum of textural relationships developed as a result of inhomogeneous strain. Porphyroblasts in low strain domains preserve textures of “static type" growth whereas syntectonic textures are found in foliated rocks. Pre-tectonic porphyroblasts in many foliated domains indicate that deformation outlasted porphyroblast growth and increased in intensity and extent with time. Retrograde porphyroblasts are post-tectonic. Evidence is presented for both rotation and non-rotation of porphyroblasts in relation to geographical coordinates during extensional top-to-south, down-dip shear in the floor. The unique structural setting in this area triggered the growth of large diapiric structures in the floor of the Rustenburg Layered Suite that are preserved as periclinal folds on the margin and within the northeastern Bushveld Complex. Extreme gravitational loading and heating of the floor by a thickness of up to 8 km of mafic magma resulted in the generation of evenly spaced, up to 7 km diameter wall-rock diapirs that penetrated the overlying magma chamber. Diapiric deformation is restricted to rocks above a decollement zone that is developed along competency contrasts and corresponds approximately with the 550 °C peak metamorphic isotherm. Strongly lineated, boudinaged and foliated rocks are developed in the interpericlinal domains between adjacent periclines. Migmatites in these domains are characterised by conjugate extensional ductile shears and associated asymmetrical boudinage suggesting bulk deformation by pure shear processes. The extension lineation was produced by lateral extension along flow lines directed toward dome culminations. Each of the four diapiric periclines is cut by a different erosional section enabling reconstruction of a typical diapir geometry. At the highest structural levels, periclines have bulbous shapes with overturned limb geometries forming overhangs. The surrounding layered igneous rocks are locally deformed into a series of outward verging folds that define a broad rim syncline. Deformation within the pericline cores is represented by constrictional deformation that produced radial curtain-type folds with steeply plunging lineations and concentrically orientated folds in the outer shell. Diapirism is closely linked to magma emplacement mechanisms. Floor folds in the country rocks were initiated in the interfinger areas of a fingered intrusion. With further magma additions and the coalescence of intrusion fingers into a single sheet, interfinger folds matured into large diapiric periclines which rose to the upper levels of the magma chamber. Strain rates estimated from strain analyses, pericline geometry and model cooling calculations are in the order of 10-14 S-1, corresponding to diapiric uplift rates of 0.6 cm/yr. Diapirism is broadly compatible with a N-S extension in the Olifants River area during emplacement of the Rustenburg Layered Suite. On a regional scale, this is indicated by existence of a major EW dyke swarm that coincides with the long axis of the Bushveld Complex. The accommodation of the Bushveld Complex into the Kaapvaal Craton was facilitated by a combination of craton-wide extension that accompanied plume related magmatic underplating, and loading of the Bushveld Complex. Isostatic adjustment in response to Bushveld Complex subsidence resulted in further development of large basement domes around the perimeter of the Bushveld Complex. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1998.

The petrography and geochemistry of the Platreef on the farm Townlands, near Potgietersrus, northern Bushveld Complex

The Platreef is a platinum group element (PGE) and base metal enriched mafic/ultramafic layer situated along the base of the northern (Potgietersrus) limb of the Bushveld Complex. It represents an important resource of PGE which is only in its early stages of exploitation. The present study contains a detailed petrographic and geochemical investigation of a borehole core drilled on the farm Townlands. At this locality, the Platreef rests on metasedimentary rocks of the Silverton Formation of the Transvaal Supergroup, and is comprised of three medium grained units of gabbronorite/feldspathic pyroxenite that are separated by hornfels interlayers. I refer to the three platiniferous layers as the Lower, Middle and Upper Platreef. The Middle Platreef is the main mineralized layer, with total PGE contents up to 4 ppm. The Lower and Upper Platreefs are less well mineralized (up to 1.5 ppm). Trace element and S-isotope data show compositional breaks between the different platiniferous layers suggesting that they represent distinct sill-like intrusions. The study also reveals a reversed differentiation trend of more primitive rocks towards the top of the succession. For example, pyroxene shows an increase in Cr2 O3 with height couples with a decrease in TiO2 . Olivine from the Upper Platreef has Fo contents between 80-83 (averaging Fo81) and those from the Middle Platreef have Fo from 78-83 (averaging Fo79 ). The Upper and Lower Platreefs have <FONT FACE="SYMBOL">d</FONT> 34S values averaging 80/00 while the Middle Platreef has <FONT FACE="SYMBOL">d</FONT> 34S values averaging 4 0 /00. All three Platreef layers have elevated <FONT FACE="SYMBOL">d</FONT> 34S values, indicating addition of 34S-enriched crustal sulphur. The model of contamination is supported by elevated K, Ca, Zr and Y contents in the Platreef relative to Critical Zone rocks from elsewhere in the Bushveld Complex, and by high Zr/Y ratios. Well defined correlations between concentrations of the individual PGE, and between the PGE and S suggest that the concentration of the PGE was controlled by segregating sulphide melt. Alteration of the rocks, possibly due to infiltration by fluids derived from the floor rocks, caused localized redistribution of Cu and, to a lesser degree, the PGE. A model is proposed whereby the Platreef magma assimilated calcsilicate and hornfels from the country rocks. The hornfels and calcsilicate of the Silverton Formation that forms the floor rocks to the Platreef on the farm Townlands constitute a possible source of the crystal sulphur. Release of S from the floor rocks caused S-supersaturation in the magma, followed by segregation of an immiscible sulphide melt. The sulphide melt scavenged the PGE from the silicate magma. This community entered the public spotlight when it regained its former homeland in the Kruger National Park. It currently partakes in an extensive programme on ‘responsible tourism’ via commercial expansion. This concession allows (or is supposed to allow) for increased community development and economic growth in the Makuleke region. The community has become more business-like in their approach to this concession. This process is encapsulated by the formalisation of the land management structures in what I refer to as Makuleke Inc. Makuleke Inc. has at its heart a ‘cultural business’, of which an ‘authentic Makuleke’ is presented and traded. I detail the production of unique, bona fide culture through branding (that is, commercial representation). Using teacher action research to promote constructivist learning environments in mathematics classes in South Africa

The present research examined whether teachers in South Africa could use feedback from a learning environment instrument to help them to increase the degree to which they emphasised constructivist-oriented teaching strategies in their classroom. The study also investigated the validity of a widely-applicable classroom environment questionnaire, as well as associations between attitudes and classroom environment. The study involved a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods and was carried out in two phases. In the first phase of the study, data were collected using the Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES), to assess learners' perceptions of the constructivist learning environment, and an attitude scale to assess learners' attitudes towards their mathematics classroom. The instruments were administered to 1864 learners in 34 intermediate (Grades 4 - 6) phase and senior phase (Grades 7 - 9) classes. Data were analysed to determine whether (a) the CLES is valid and reliable for use in South Africa and (b) relationships exist between learners' perceptions of the learning environment and their attitude toward their mathematics classes. Descriptive analysis was used to generate feedback information for teachers based on graphical profiles of learners' perceptions of the actual and preferred learning environment for each class. Analyses of data collected from 1864 learners in 34 classes supported the factor structure, internal consistency reliability (Cronbach alpha coefficient), and discriminant validity of the CLES, as well as its ability to differentiate between classes. The results suggest that researchers and teachers can be confident about using the modified version of the CLES in mathematics classes in South Africa in the future. / Simple correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine whether associations exist between learners' attitudes towards their mathematics class and their perceptions of the learning environment. The results indicated that student attitudes were associated with more emphasis on all four CLES scales used. Two scales, Uncertainty and Student Negotiation, were found to contribute most to variance in student attitudes in mathematics classes in South Africa when the other CLES scales were mutually controlled. Descriptive analysis was used to provide information about the constructivist nature of mathematics classes in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The results indicate that students would prefer a learning environment that is more positive than the one that they perceive as being present in terms of emphasis on all four CLES scales used. The second phase involved a 12-week intervention period during which two teachers used the pretest profiles of actual and preferred classroom environment means to assist them to develop strategies aimed at improving the constructivist orientation of their classroom learning environments. The teachers implemented the strategies and maintained daily journals as a means of reflecting on their teaching practices. Throughout the 12-week period, the researcher made regular support visits that included classroom observations, reviews of daily journals, discussions with teachers and interviews with learners. / As well, the researcher had the opportunity of giving support to the teachers in the implementation of their strategies. At the end of the 12 weeks, the CLES was re-administered to learners to determine whether their perceptions of the constructivist emphasis in their classroom learning environments had changed. The posttest graphical profiles indicated that there was a sizeable improvement in teachers' emphasis on CLES dimensions in their classrooms. Apparently, teachers using action research are able to use learners' responses to the CLES to develop and implement strategies for improving their learning environment. The study suggests that journal writing, as a tool used by teachers on a daily basis, can improve their professional expertise as reflective practitioners.
