Physiological and nutritional factors affecting oestrous activity and pregnancy in the ewe, with emphasis on the role of melatonin

Wigzell, Susan January 1989 (has links)
In seven experiments carried out under natural-daylength conditions at 57oN, Scottish Blackface and Border Leicester x Scottish Blackface ewes of varying physiological states and nutritional regimes received daily at 1500 h an oral dose of either melatonin dissolved in water and alcohol or the vehicle alone. Throughout the experiments blood samples were collected thrice weekly for progesterone, prolactin and follicle stimulating hormone concentrations (FSH) and at 10 to 15 minute intervals for periods of up to 24 h for luteinizing hormone (LH). Ovulation rates were determined by laparoscopy. When given from the beginning of June and mid-March respectively melatonin advanced and reversed the breeding season, the reversal being as effective in ewes with an extended lactation as in those weaned early or those that had not bred in the previous year. Short-term treatment (30 days) with melatonin during mid-anoestrus not only failed to advance the breeding season but delayed it. Longer term treatment (60 to 90 days) produced transient oestrous cyclicity with ewes returning to anoestrus within one month after the end of treatment. For ewes on a low plane of nutrition melatonin increased ovulation rate at first behavioural oestrus and appeared to reduce embryo mortality. In all experiments melatonin suppressed plasma prolactin 10 to 15 days after the start of treatment with levels remaining low throughout the period of treatment except during late pregnancy. There was no evidence that melatonin promoted a progressive increase in the frequency of the pulsatile release of LH or had any stimulatory effect on FSH secretion in the first 6 weeks of treatment. It did however increase plasma progesterone concentrations in the post-oestrus period.

Relationship between breeding activity and rainfall for Swainson’s Spurfowl, Pternistis swainsonii, within southern Africa, with specific reference to the Springbok Flats, Limpopo Province, South Africa

Jansen, R, Crowe, TM 01 January 2005 (has links)
We collated the literature available on the breeding activity of the Swainson’s Spurfowl Pternistis swainsonii and made use of reliable unpublished reports, nest record cards and field observations within the Springbok Flats, Limpopo Province, South Africa to establish breeding seasons and pairing behaviour. The onset of breeding (egg laying) is closely associated with rainfall, with male gonad development, population density and covey size (pairing behaviour), all correlated with rainfall. Peak breeding activity is from January–April in South Africa, February–May in Zimbabwe and March–June in Botswana. Egg laying has been recorded in all months and sporadic egg laying in the winter months is most likely the result of isolated rainfall. Mean clutch size is 5.2 eggs/hen (n = 140) with an incubation period of 23 days and brood hatching success and chick survival of 69.4% over the southern African sub-region. Current hunting seasons within Limpopo Province are in line with the recommended hunting season for this region and should remain unchanged: 15 June–30 September. The success of this phasianid can be attributed to its extended breeding season, high survival rate of hatchlings and the potential of birds to breed within their first year.

INFLUENCE OF LANDCOVER ON NORTHERN BOBWHITE HOME RANGE AND SURVIVAL AT MULTIPLE SCALES IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Crawford, Caleb Stanley 01 September 2021 (has links)
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have continually declined across much of their native range due to changes in land use and habitat. This notable decline causes concern for the future of this important game bird species and highlights the need for research on how habitat influences bobwhite vital rates. My research, conducted during 2018-2020 at Burning Star State Fish and Wildlife Area, addressed the following two objectives to provide information on how landcover characteristics influence bobwhite populations: (1) investigate how landcover characteristics influence annual bobwhite home range size, and (2) investigate how landcover characteristics influence bobwhite breeding season survival. For Objective 1, I radio-marked 113 individuals of which 50 bobwhites (31 males and 19 females) had ≥25 independent tracking locations and were used in my analyses. I modeled landcover types related to bobwhite habitat selection, habitat avoidance, foraging habitat, and protective cover to annual bobwhite home range size. Landcover types related to foraging habitat formed the most parsimonious model, with the proportion of grassland having the greatest negative influence on bobwhite home range size. As expected, landcover types that are thought to be beneficial to bobwhite fitness were negatively related to bobwhite home range size, suggesting those landcover types provide necessary resources for bobwhites throughout their full annual cycle. For Objective 2, I radio-marked 113 individuals of which 50 bobwhites (31 males and 19 females) had ≥25 independent tracking locations and were used in my analyses. I used a known fate model of the influence of landcover types, in a stepwise fashion, on bobwhite breeding season survival at two scales, home range and landscape. At the home range scale, the univariate model including early successional forest was the most parsimonious model, wherein the proportion of early successional forest negatively influenced bobwhite breeding season survival. Other competitive models included agriculture and early successional forest + scrub shrub where agriculture positively influenced breeding season survival while early successional forest and scrub shrub negatively influenced breeding season survival. The negative influence of landcover types thought to provide necessary protective cover for bobwhites on breeding season survival is inconsistent with the current paradigm that woody cover is an important habitat component that provides protective and escape cover, thermoregulatory functions, and midday loafing sites for bobwhites. Early successional forest provides visually appealing woody protective cover but appears to expose bobwhites to a higher predation risk because trees provide perch habitat for avian predators. Agriculture positively influenced breeding season survival because during the breeding season, agriculture provides overhead cover and bare ground that provides protective cover, foraging opportunities, and enables ease of movement. At the landscape scale, the null model was the most parsimonious model, but there was weak evidence that the proportion of grassland positively influenced breeding season survival. My study demonstrates how landcover composition influences annual home range size and breeding season survival at different scales.

Giraldo-Arana, David January 2019 (has links)
This experiment compared the possible effects of weaning weight (PeD), yearling weight (PeS), rump backfat thickness (EGSG), serum concentrations of IGF-I (IGF-I) and insulin to yearling (INS), daily weight gain until weaning (GD), between weaning to yearling (GS) and from birth to yearling (GT), further the visual scores of conformation (C), precocity (P) and musculature (M) on weaning and yearling, on age at first pregnancy and the performance in the first breeding season (EM) of Nellore heifers. For that, data from 241 animals, produced by P@RM farming, born between May to September 2016 was used. After weaning all heifers were kept on pasture in a single lot and CPM score and body weight gain, under restriction of food and water for 12 h, were evaluated at weaning and repeated after a minimum weight gain of 50 kg. Breeding season started a day after evaluation of yearling, where heifers were subjected to a puberty induction protocol and two fixed time artificial inseminations, followed by a clean-up bull. There was an individual effect of C at weaning, PeD, GD, P and M on the yearling, GS, GT and IGF-I on age at days at first pregnancy (p<0.05), however, the date of birth, P and M at weaning had no significant effect (p>0.05). All CPM evaluations showed positive correlations with GD, GS and GT both at weaning (r= 0.61, 0.38, 0.43, p<0.05) and yearling (0.46, 0.50, 0, 41, p<0.05... Mother-pup interaction and the impact of anthropogenic disturbance in wild harbour seals (Phoca vitulina)

Groothedde, Julia January 2011 (has links)
This study investigated the abundance of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) on inter-tidal sandbanks, mother-pup interactions as well as the impact of anthropogenic disturbance during breeding season. The abundance was a composite picture of harbour seals of different age and sex, and increased gradually towards peaks in June. Although the sandbank water inlet was the longest time emerged, mother-pup pairs and other seals hauled out more abundant on the other sandbanks, probably due to space availability, differences in sandbank structure and distance to human activity. Mothers and their offspring were found to be mostly inactive during haul out. Mothers initiated significantly more frequently interactions i.e. hauling out, entering water and suckling. Seals hauled out at sandbanks close to the dyke were most frequently disturbed by pedestrians. Important regarding the impact on the seals seemed to be the group size of pedestrians and the distance to the seals (on dyke or seaside of it), i.e. pedestrians seaside disturbed more seals. This applies also to the disturbance by marine activity, e.g. distance of seals to the engine boat. Jet fighters were shown to affect the highest mean number of seals per event. After anthropogenic disturbances separations of mother and offspring were not recorded, e.g. due to seals being in the water; however, the steep edges as result of the culvert at water inlet lead to a few separations. The most frequent behavioural response towards anthropogenic disturbance was commotion with a probably lower level of energy costs during the energy consuming lactation period.

The study of sexual behavior of females was evaluated from the behavior shown by females before the breeding during the breeding season. This study was conducted in two consecutive years, and the male effect was used only in the first year. In the two years 59 females were used, with 20 nulliparous, 20 primiparous and 19 pluriparous. The behaviors studied were sniffed or not sniffed the male, urinated in the presence of male or not urinated in the presence of male, reactivity with male approach with score one, two or three, posture acceptance time to cover. In the second year of the experiment added the behavior of vocalizations. In the first year, nulliparous and primiparous had a higher frequency of the behavior of the sniffed the male compared to pluriparous. The results showed that the second year for all categories was the variable most frequently sniffed the male in relation to non sniffed the male, and vocalization was demonstrated by nulliparous females (8%) and primiparous (3%), but pluriparous not vocalized. In both years the primiparous showed more curiosity and also more time to breeding, thus characterizing particular attention to this category at the time of coverage. In the study of maternal-filial behavior, showed 46 births (16 pluriparous , 17 secundiparous and 13 primiparous), in which they evaluated the following variables: time of parturition, number of offspring, eating placenta, water intake, intake food, vocalizations per minute mothers, latency to make the first care, number of cleanings per minute, latency between birth and raising, latency between birth and breastfeeding, number of feedings creates, number of times that creates urinated and vocalizations of pups. Weighed at birth and at weaning of neonates were also performed. The more experienced females had higher number of fetuses, however, secundiparous had a lower mortality rate of their offspring, generating a greater number of weaned. Maternal care of the neonates at birth positively influence the feeding of colostrum and development of the offspring to weaning. Avian Ecology and Conservation in Tropical Agricultural Landscapes with Emphasis on Vermivora Chrysoptera

Chandler, Richard Brooks 01 February 2011 (has links)
The world's biodiversity is concentrated in tropical ecosystems, yet tropical forests are being converted for agriculture at a rapid rate. I evaluated the potential of an alternative coffee production system known as Integrated Open Canopy (IOC) to contribute to avian conservation. This study was conducted from 2005-2010 in the Cordillera de Tilarán, Costa Rica. My results indicate that species richness of forest-dependent birds was higher in IOC farms than in shade coffee farms, and was comparable to secondary forest sites. There was no difference in species richness of Neotropical-Nearctic migrants between IOC and shade coffee farms. Overall similarity was higher between IOC farms and primary forest than between shade coffee farms and primary forest. he golden-winged warbler Vermivora chrysoptera is a declining Neotropical-Nearctic migrant bird, yet little is known about its non-breeding season ecology and demographics. I found that golden-winged warbler abundance was highest at intermediate precipitation levels found at middle elevations (1000-1200 m) of the Pacific slope, but they were absent from the dry forests at lower elevations on the Pacific slope. Abundance peaked in forests with canopy heights of 22 m, and was positively related to the quantity of hanging dead leaves. Radio-telemetry data indicated that golden-winged warblers used microhabitat features characteristic of disturbance more frequently than expected by chance. Selection of these microhabitat features was related to their highly specialized dead-leaf foraging behavior, which may also have contributed to their high degrees of site fidelity, mixed-species flock attendance, and territoriality. These behaviors have important conservation implications because they constrain density, and thus could affect carrying capacity. Population dynamics were characterized by estimating plot-level and individual-level apparent survival and recruitment rates within and among non-breeding seasons. Both levels of analysis suggested that recruitment was too low to offset mortalities within this study area. This study indicates that increasing forest cover in tropical agricultural landscapes may be the most effective way of providing habitat for bird species of high conservation concern, including the golden-winged warbler. Integrated open canopy coffee production is one option for achieving this goal because it provides a financial incentive to protect or restore forest.

Garcia, Luisa Almeida Deragon January 2014 (has links)
Seminal plasma (SP) proteins have been assessed in relation to reproductive fertility levels or infertility, in several species of mammals, particularly domestic animals. Horse seminal plasma proteins 1 (HSP-1) and 2 (HSP-2) are the most abundant proteins in equine seminal plasma. The aim of this study was to investigate in adult stallions the concentrations of seminal plasma HSP-1/2 and total protein in the breeding season and non-breeding season and to determine if these concentrations were related with fertility. SP was obtained from 42 ejaculates of 11 adult stallions (3-25 yrs). Stallions were allocated into two groups (good and poor fertility) according to pregnancy rates of mares, and to their semen viability data in the first collection day. Seminal plasma HSP- 1/2 concentrations (mg/mL) were measured and analyzed by an Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography using a UHPLC column. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in total protein and HSP-1/2 concentration (mg/mL, mean ± SD) in the ejaculates from good and poor fertility stallions. The HSP-1/2 concentration did not show differences in the first and second ejaculates of good fertility stallions in both the non-breeding and breeding season. SP of stallions classified as poor fertility showed significant difference (P<0.05) in HSP-1/2 concentration between the first and second ejaculate in both the non-breeding and breeding season. In conclusion, the concentration of the major proteins of stallion seminal plasma HSP-1/2 was higher in ejaculates from stallions with poor fertility, is not influenced by the season and could serve as biomarker for poor fertility in stallions.

Also was evaluated the response of these females submitted to the Ovsynch protocol of synchronization after the breeding season (BS). Seventy and two Nellore primiparous beef cows, proceeding from the herd of a property located in Curvelo, had been used, randomly separate in two groups, with common mineral supplement and another one with specific mineral supplement for reproduction. The cows had been observed daily during the BS for heat detention, and the identified ones, submitting the artificial insemination. During the BS, four cows of the 36 of the group with the specific mineral supplement for reproduction showed heat and they had been inseminated, whereas three of the 36 of the group that received common mineral supplement showed heat but only two had been inseminated. In the gestation diagnosis positive gestation for the inseminated cows was evidenced. After BS, the cows that had not showed heat had been submitted to the Ovsynch protocol of synchronization. Randomly they had been chosen in three groups, being 20 in the group with specific mineral supplement for reproduction and synchronized, 20 with common mineral supplement and synchronized and 20 not synchronized. After the gestation diagnosis, evidenced positive gestation in two cows that had received mineral supplement common and had been synchronized. The use of specific mineral supplement for reproduction in primiparous beef cows, presenting poor body condition and calf suckling, kept in low quality pastures, does not provide improvement in the reproductive indices during the BS and nor when they had been submitted to the Ovsynch protocol of synchronization.
