The Mechanical Pathway: Reactivating a Derelict Rail Corridor in Edmonton

Nally, Michael 25 November 2010 (has links)
This architectural thesis addresses a derelict urban rail corridor and the possibility of combining architecture and landscape to reactivate its latent potential as a dynamic seam in the urban fabric. Edmonton is a city built on a foundation of interconnectedness with the nation. Rail access has established the city as a staging hub for various industrial practices since the mid 19th century: import and export, agriculture, oil and gas, etc. As inner city rail access as been discontinued, parcels of rail land have been left as relics; nostalgic reminders of a formerly expansive arterial mechanical network, in turn connecting the city to a mechanical backbone spanning the nation. This architectural intervention will reactivate a piece of rail land in the northwestern part of downtown Edmonton by establishing a dynamic activity corridor around an energy-harnessing machine. / Apart from in-depth studies in renewable resource harvesting and climate, the thesis is driven by studies in rail and agricultural mechanisms, as well as existing post-industrial park typologies.

Data-Driven Park Planning: Comparative Study of Survey with Social Media Data

Sim, Jisoo 05 May 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study was (1) to identify visitors’ behaviors in and perceptions of linear parks, (2) to identify social media users’ behaviors in and perceptions of linear parks, and (3) to compare small data with big data. This chapter discusses the main findings and their implications for practitioners such as landscape architects and urban planners. It has three sections. The first addresses the main findings in the order of the research questions at the center of the study. The second describes implications and recommendations for practitioners. The final section discusses the limitations of the study and suggests directions for future work. This study compares two methods of data collection, focused on activities and benefits. The survey asked respondents to check all the activities they did in the park. Social media users’ activities were detected by term frequency in social media data. Both results ordered the activities similarly. For example social interaction and art viewing were most popular on the High Line, then the 606, then the High Bridge according to both methods. Both methods also reported that High Line visitors engaged in viewing from overlooks the most. As for benefits, according to both methods vistors to the 606 were more satisfied than High Line visitors with the parks’ social and natural benefits. These results suggest social media analytics can replace surveys when the textual information is sufficient for analysis. Social media analytics also differ from surveys in accuracy of results. For example, social media revealed that 606 users were interested in events and worried about housing prices and crimes, but the pre-designed survey could not capture those facts. Social media analytics can also catch hidden and more general information: through cluster analysis, we found possible reasons for the High Line’s success in the arts and in the New York City itself. These results involve general information that would be hard to identify through a survey. On the other hand, surveys provide specific information and can describe visitors’ demographics, motivations, travel information, and specific benefits. For example, 606 users tend to be young, high-income, well educated, white, and female. These data cannot be collected through social media. / Doctor of Philosophy / Turning unused infrastructure into green infrastructure, such as linear parks, is not a new approach to managing brownfields. In the last few decades, changes in the industrial structure and the development of transportation have had a profound effect on urban spatial structure. As the need for infrastructure, which played an important role in the development of past industry, has decreased, many industrial sites, power plants, and military bases have become unused. This study identifies new ways of collecting information about a new type of park, linear parks, using a new method, social media analytics. The results are then compared with survey results to establish the credibility of social media analytics. Lastly, shortcomings of social media analytics are identified. This study is meaningful in helping us understand the users of new types of parks and suggesting design and planning strategies. Regarding methodology, this study also involves evaluating the use of social media analytics and its advantages, disadvantages, and reliability.

Cantinhos do Céu / Cantinho do Céu

Matsunaga, Melissa Kikumi 15 May 2015 (has links)
This dissertation comprises a landscape study of the neighborhoods Cantinho do Céu and Parque Residencial dos Lagos, from the perspective of their residents and former residents, called here as experiencers. The research lies in a cultural approach based on the meeting of the people with the space where they live. The aforementioned neighborhoods are located in water source area of the metropolis of São Paulo, especially on the banks of the Billings Reservoir, and they have been considered as precarious settlements by the recent public policies. In the study, the historical formation of these neighborhoods is rescued until the ongoing urban intervention processes, focusing on the effects and representations engendered in the production of space. The study was conducted from the association of desk research and field research: on the one hand, primary and secondary data were collected, in addition to the literature on the subject. Besides that, oral sources were recorded in interviews, collective conversations and experiences with the experiencers. Aspects of the daily life such as: values and emotions, practices and strategies of live, conflicts and tensions are drawn from the narratives of experiencers, and because of this condition, are woven through specific perspectives. The work is organized in two parts: the first one deals with the conflict historically constituted in the water source region, searching for understandings already elucidated in academic papers related to the subject and recovering the context in which the narratives treated in the second part concern. The second part elaborates through excerpts from interviews, testimonies and life stories, the theme of landscape of the studied neighborhoods. Taking the temporal basis as condition in its preparation, this second part deals with two moments: at first, with the formation of the studied neighborhoods and then, with the latest processes, house removals and displacements of experiencers. In addition, appropriations of the linear park built where the families once lived, are elucidated, giving other research possibilities to the context in which the neighborhoods are stablished

The objective of this study is to analyze the revitalization model of permanent preservation areas (APP) by creating linear parks, in order to contribute to the environmental management of urban water resources, using Córrego Bezerra as a case study. This work has a qualitative research approach where the bibliographic review, the documentary analysis and the case study were used. This study was carried out in two stages: the diagnosis of the study area, through a photographic survey, data collection by thematic maps and documents provided by public agencies; and social analysis, through semi-structured interviews, using the saturation method. Therefore, the present study shows how these factors influence the revitalization of the Córrego Bezerra and its riparian forest, as well as how the implantation of an urban linear park would influence the environmental and social dynamics of the western region of the city of Cascavel.
