Reporting application at SDC : A low bandwidth mobile application

The objective of the report is to investigate which kind of mobile appli-cation, native, hybrid or web, that is the best regarding cross-platform support compared to development cost. As there are little information regarding pure web applications for mobile devices a prototype will be constructed to give light in this technology. The prototype should an-swer the questions if it can save a year's usage in the cell phones memory, if it is possible to have support for 100 percent of Sweden area and generally if this approach would suffice. There are also some physi-cal restrictions on the web application. A login must be done in less than 5 second, fetch TOs( timber orders) within 10 seconds, report a row within 5 seconds. This in a 2G environment, in Telias network, which is mostly likely to be used in the forest. To easily test the application the CPN-tools(colored petri nets) are used to graphically model the applica-tion and simulations are thereafter done to get a scenes how the applica-tion would perform during many years of usage. To construct have been constructed with the aid of open web technologies as HTML5,CSS4, JavaScript, JQuery and JQuery mobile. The prototype used asynchronies communication to mask loss of coverage and long loading times. It also utilized HTML5 localStorage to save TOs and employer information so that minimize the need for fetching information many times. The proto-type application cannot be used in 100 percent of Sweden's area because the cellular coverage is not present in big areas in the north of Sweden. Therefore information is stored locally but after the pre fetched work orders are completed new work orders must be fetched where cellular coverage is present. The application still have a big usage area and as most wood products comes from the middle of Sweden this cannot be seen as a big problem. To save a year's usage of data on the other hand is not a problem at all. About 10 percent of the available 5 MB of storage in the HTML5 localStorage would be needed. It did also with ease handle the time limitations. As a conclusion the need for a web applica-tion, for SDC, is only present if both IVR and web reporting through a computer is if these services are liquidated in the long run. There are a bit more work with creating a hybrid native/web application using third-party applications but it in turns would give a better coverage area as that kind of application can pre download all TOs and employers ignoring any limitations in storage. This is not possible to do as a pure web application can't be run in the background on the phone.

Možnosti využitia HTML5 / Areas of HTML5 usage

This diploma thesis describes new HTML5 standard. The aim is to show the potential uses and benefits of HTML5 compared to HTML4. Another objective is to analyze the support of HTML5 in most advanced web browsers on desktops and mobile devices. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part is divided into 5 chapters. The first chapter describes the introduction to the main concepts and definitions. The second chapter describes the differences between HTML4 and HTML5 elements. The third chapter describes HTML5 API. The fourth chapter analyzes the support of HTML5 featu- res in web browsers. Last chapter of the theoretical part discusses tools based on best practices which are useful for developing HTML5 applications. In the practical part, there are implemented real examples of HTML5 features. Practical examples are described as a tutorial. The contribution of this work is a demonstration of the advantages of HTML5 over the old standard. Contribution is also analysis of support of HTML5 features in web browsers. The diploma thesis is intended primarily for web developers and can be used as a reference guide. HTML5 is the standard of the future, and web developers can contribute to the overall improvement of the web by using it.

Använda metoder från Progressive Web Application för att lösa specifika problem i en webapplikation

Computers and similar units are taking a larger part in our lives and we expect ourwork tools to operate the same way the applications in our private units do. Qpick is awarehouse management software in the shape of a web application that is used onhandheld units with the operating system Android, and desktops with the operatingsystem Windows. The purpose of this thesis is to test and examine which well knowntechnical solutions can be used to solve specific problems in a web application.The study is a case study focusing on the software Qpick. To answer the thesis´ tworesearch questions, two Qpick users were interviewed and observed during a shift.Qpicks´ product owner and a Qpick technician were interviewed. The application wasexamined and underwent performance testing, before and after the implementation oftechnical solutions.The result proved that implementing a service worker is a solution to handle lack ofinternet access. Caching of resources is a solution to lower the load on the web serveras well as speeding up the application and making it more responsive. AJAX is asolution to keep the application up to date without having to update the wholeapplication, and not send or receive more information than necessary. localStorage isa solution to store data in the browser. / Tekniken blir en allt större del av vår vardag och vi förväntar oss att våraarbetsredskap ska fungera på samma sätt som applikationerna på våra privata enhetergör. Qpick är en lagerhanteringsmjukvara i form av en webapplikation som användspå handdatorer med operativsystem Android samt truckdatorer med operativsystemetWindows. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att bepröva välkända tekniska lösningarför att lösa specifika problem i en webapplikation.Studien är en fallstudie med inriktning på programmet Qpick, för att besvara studienstvå forskningsfrågor har två Qpick-användare intervjuats och observerats under ettarbetspass. Vidare har Qpicks produktägare samt en Qpick.tekniker intervjuats.Applikationen granskades och genomgick prestandatester både före och efterimplementation av tekniska lösningar.Resultatet visade att implementera en service worker är en lösning för att hanterabristande internetåtkomst, cachning av resurser är en lösning för att minska tryck påwebservern samt göra applikationen snabbare och mer responsiv. AJAX är en lösningför att hålla applikationen uppdaterad utan att behöva uppdatera hela sidans innehåll,och inte skicka och ta emot mer innehåll än det som faktiskt är nödvändigt.localStorage är en lösning för att lagra data i webbläsaren.

Det har blivit vanligare att ge användare val mellan dark mode och light mode, en undersökning görs över hur det påverkar användaren att ha val mellan olika teman samt val av andra aspekter av en webbsidas design. Hur dessa val kan förbättra tillgängligheten för användare med funktionsvariation undersöks och diskuteras. Studien fokuserar på hur dessa val påverkar användare men också den tekniska aspekten av att ha användaralternativ. Två hypoteser kom upp, att version utan val skulle ha snabbast laddningstid och att användare finner det viktigt att ha med användaralternativ. Resultaten visar att den första hypotesen motbevisas medan den andra hypotesen bevisas. Inför framtiden så önskas mer fördjupning och utveckling speciellt då funktionsvariationer alltid kommer att finnas kvar. / <p>Det finns övrigt digitalt material (t.ex. film-, bild- eller ljudfiler) eller modeller/artefakter tillhörande examensarbetet som ska skickas till arkivet.</p>
