Falls are the most serious problems facing the ageing community. The goal of the current project was to carry out a simplified analysis using kinematic parameters like joint angles and spatial temporal parameters in order to analyse the age related changes in functional gait as well as to identify the biomechanics indicators of locomotion alterations that can help determined fall risk levels in the ageing community. / Οι πτώσεις είναι ένα από τα σοβαρότερα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει σήμερα ο ηλικιωμένος πληθυσμός. Στόχος της εργασίας είναι να γίνει μια ανάλυση των κινητικών παραμέτρων όπως των γωνιών των αρθρώσεων και των χωροχρονικών παραμέτρων ώστε να αναλυθούν οι αλλαγές λόγω ηλικίας στη κίνηση καθώς και να αναγνωριστούν οι εμβιομηχανικοί δείκτες των κινητικών προβλημάτων οι οποίοι βοηθούν στο να καθοριστούν τα επίπεδα του κινδύνου πτώσης στους ηλικιωμένους ανθρώπους.

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Stellenbosch University participated in a project to re-design the compressor
section of a diesel locomotive turbocharger. Tests conducted on the prototype
compressor showed possible rotating stall in the diffuser section before the
designed higher pressure ratio could be achieved. When approaching the higher
pressure ratio, the compressor inlet trunk started to rhythmically collapse (due
to suction), the engine shook and bellows of black smoke were exhausted by
the engine. It was decided to simulate the prototype compressor's operation
by using the 1-D theory of Aungier (2000) and to perform a 3-D CFD analysis
of the compressor using FINE/Turbo of NUMECA International.
A veri cation process was followed to show the accuracy of the 1-D and
3-D modelling methods using two well-known centrifugal compressor test cases
found in the literature, namely the O-Rotor by Eckardt (1975, 1976, 1980) and
the "Radiver" open CFD test case by Ziegler et al. (2003c). Results from the
models were compared to available experimental results and the accuracy was
found to be su cient to investigate the prototype compressor's impeller and
diffuser.
Both prediction methods con rmed separation in the vaned di user across
the entire operating ow range of the prototype compressor at the design impeller
speed. The 3-D method identi ed supersonic ow at the vaned diffuser
inlet at the operating point and also predicted a smaller operating range than
originally anticipated. Both the 1-D and 3-D methods also predicted impeller
blade stall over the entire operating ow range at the design impeller speed. A recommendation was made to redesign the impeller and diffuser of the prototype
compressor. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Universiteit van Stellenbosch het deel geneem aan 'n projek om die kompressor
gedeelte van 'n diesel lokomotief se turbo-aanjaer te herontwerp. Toetse
uitgevoer op die prototipe kompressor het moontlike roterende wegbreking in
die diffuser seksie uitgewys voordat die ontwerpte hoër drukverhouding bereik
kon word. Toe die hoër drukverhouding genader is, het die kompressor inlaatpyp
begin ritmies inmekaar vou (as gevolg van die suig aksie), die enjin
het geskud en wolke swart rook is deur die enjin uitgeblaas. Die besluit is
geneem om die prototipe kompressor se werking te simuleer met behulp van
die 1-D teorie van Aungier (2000) en om ook 'n 3-D berekenings vloeimeganika
(BVM) analise op die kompressor uit te voer met behulp van FINE/Turbo
van NUMECA Internasionaal.
'n Veri kasieproses is gevolg om die akkuraatheid van die 1-D en 3-D modelle
te illustreer met behulp van twee welbekende sentrifugaal kompressor
toetsgevalle beskikbaar in die literatuur, naamlik die O-Rotor deur Eckardt
(1975, 1976, 1980) en die "Radiver" oop BVM toetsgeval deur Ziegler et al.
(2003c). Resultate van die modelle is vergelyk met beskikbare eksperimentele

The Locomotive Springs Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, located on the north shore of Great Salt Lake, Utah, is a state-owned area of about 12,000 acres. Six springs arise from the desert floor and flow south and south-east toward Great Salt Lake. The refuge encompasses these springs and their outflows. The area, while predominately vegetated by the Sarcobatus-Atriplex type, has 1,200 acres of open water and about 2,560 acres of marsh and stream-channel edges. The area was purchased by the State of Utah in 1934 with the express purpose of providing waterfowl hunting for the general public who could not afford to hunt on the privately owned duck clubs that encompassed much of the better waterfowl marsh areas of Great Salt Lake (Cook, 1932).

<p>Since the mid-1990s there has been an active effort to develop hydrocarbon-fueled power generation and propulsion systems on the scale of centimeters or smaller. This effort led to the creation and expansion of a field of research focused around the design and reduction to practice of Power MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) devices, beginning first with microscale jet engines and a generation later more broadly encompassing MEMS devices which generate power or pump heat. Due to small device scale and fabrication techniques, design constraints are highly coupled and conventional solutions for device requirements may not be practicable. </p><p>This thesis describes the experimental investigation, modeling and potential applications for two classes of microscale jet pumps: jet ejectors and jet injectors. These components pump fluids with no moving parts and can be integrated into Power MEMS devices to satisfy pumping requirements by supplementing or replacing existing solutions. This thesis presents models developed from first principles which predict losses experienced at small length scales and agree well with experimental results. The models further predict maximum achievable power densities at the onset of detrimental viscous losses.</p> / Dissertation

Atlikta prekinių-magistralinių lokomotyvų gedimų analizė iki parko atnaujinimo ir po jo. Pateikta krovinių vežimų analizė iki 2007 metų bei prognozė iki 2030 m. Apžvelgti AB „Lietuvos geležinkeliai“ vykdomi bei numatomi įgyvendinti infrastruktūros projektai, kurie gali turėti įtakos lokomotyvų parko kitimo ilgalaikei strategijai. Remiantis teorinėmis formulėmis ir informacija, nustatytomis prielaidomis bei lokomotyvų apyvartos analize buvo išvesta formulė, pagal kurią skaičiuoti turimų, numatytų įsigyti bei modernizuotų lokomotyvų pajėgumai parko kitimo perspektyvoje ir palyginti su prognozuojamu krovinių srautų didėjimu. Identifikavus reikalingus lokomotyvų pajėgumus ir jų papildomą kiekį perspektyvoje pasiūlytas racionaliausias lokomotyvų parko kitimo ilgalaikės strategijos variantas. / The locomotive park, its composition, age and technical characteristics of stock company are analyzed in this master’s dissertation. There are reviewed renewal programmes of Locomotive Park. Here have been analyzed breakdowns of freight locomotives till and after renewal program. Here have been analyzed freight haulage till 2007 year and forecast till 2030 year. There is reviewed JSC “Lietuvos geležinkeliai“ supposed infrastructure project which could influence to the locomotives fleet long-rate strategic. Considering to theoretical formulas and information, selected presumptions and locomotive work analyses was educed formula in accordance with was calculated locomotives potential work in the future and compared with forecast of freight haulage. Here have been identified the demand and amount of locomotive work in the prospect and suggested most rational development prospects of the locomotive park of JSC "Lietuvos geležinkeliai".

The device is designed using the company's GlobalSat GPS module ET-212 and the "Microchip" PIC18F4520 microcontroller, which communicate with each other through the UART interface NMEA0183 protocol. Equipped with a standard SD memory port, the device is suitable for any manufacturer of SD memory. Printed circuit boards designed with Cadsoft "'s EAGLE 5.11.0 software, and the microcontroller software is written MikroC pro 3.8v compiler. This device is designed for locomotives ALS status code and data storage can be used in the locomotives equipped with the ALS (KLUB) system.
