Geophysical and geological analysis of fault activity and seismic history of the Obion River Area, New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), Western Tennessee, USA

Thesis advisor: John Ebel / The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is well known for producing some of the largest intra-cratonic earthquakes within the North American Plate. The common hypothesis for the geological structure within the NMSZ is that stress is released across three major faults: the Cottonwood Grove Fault, the New Madrid North Fault, and the Reelfoot Thrust Fault. Evidence exists that would suggest an alternative model of geologic deformation in the area: that stress is being released across more than these three faults. A geologic and geophysical investigation was done to investigate a hypothetical fault west of Dyersburg, TN to test the alternative multi-fault hypothesis. A seismically created sand blow was logged in close proximity to the fault projection. Weathering of the sand blow indicated that the age of the sand blow came from a seismic event prior to the 1811-1812 earthquakes. There was no evidence to confirm this sand blow was created by a hypothetical fault in close proximity. A seismic exploration of the area was done across four seismic lines, primarily mapping Quaternary-age Mississippi River flood plain deposits. These seismic surveys yielded no evidence to suggest the presence of an additional fault. Across all surveys no evidence was found to conclusively support any existing theory on fault movement in the NMSZ. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College. This dissertation utilizes the gay neighborhood of Chueca as the foci for understanding the rise of public gay identity in Madrid and Spain. By "reading" the urban space and coupling that reading with information gathered from ethnographic and historical methodologies, my work sheds light on the role of globalization in sexual identity, draws connections between changes in socio-political circumstances and the rise of public gay identity, and explores how gay men understand and use urban spaces in order to engage fluid and fixed sexual subjectivities. This dissertation, a product of over two years of living and researching in Chueca, Madrid, Spain, is informed by themes of: globalization of sexual identity; the relationships between sexual identity, consumption and popular culture; the use and sometimes abuse of urban space for the fomentation of sexual identity in personal lives, politics and public awareness; and, of course, the problems facing a 'native' and yet, foreign anthropologist in a globalized Western European city. Overall, the study addresses how the urban space of Chueca is understood, utilized, and taken advantage of by the gay community in Madrid; and the repercussions, and consequences evident from 1975, the time of Spain´s transition to democracy (La Transición) to one year after the 2005 legalization of gay marriage in Spain.

INTEGRATED SEISMIC-REFLECTION AND MICROGRAVITY IMAGING ACROSS THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF THE CHARLESTON UPLIFT, NEW MADRID SEISMIC ZONE, USA

The Charleston Uplift (CU), a 30-km-long by 7-km-wide, N46°E-oriented subsurface geologic anomaly in the northern Mississippi embayment near Charleston, Missouri, exhibits up to 36 m of vertical relief across the Paleogene/Quaternary unconformity. Subsurface structural relief, along with the CU’s coincident boundary alignment with contemporary microseismicity and the New Madrid North Fault (NMNF), suggest a structural origin. Subsequent seismic soundings indicate vertical structural relief is present in Cretaceous and Paleozoic horizons, supporting the fault-controlled origin. The southern boundary (CU-s) had not been investigated, nor had any direct fault images been acquired. Integrated microgravity and seismic-reflection methods across the inferred CU-s establish the first image of this fault. Forward modeling indicated that the vertical variation of strata across the CU-s would induce a microgravity anomaly of 1.6 mGal. The observed microgravity anomaly survey across the southern boundary is 1.616 ± .004 mGal, and is consistent with the tectonic interpretation. A subsequently acquired seismic-reflection profile corroborates this interpretation. The imaged fault shows approximately 60, 35, and 35 meters of vertical down-to-the-south throw across the tops of Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Tertiary horizons, respectively. This confirms the CU is not an erosional feature, but a structurally controlled extension of the NMNF.
