A Phenomenological Approach to First-Generation Latino Immigrants' Experiences of Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives in the WorkplaceLinares, Carlos 18 December 2015 (has links)
<p> The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the work experiences of foreign-born, first-generation Latino immigrants with regard to cultural diversity and inclusion initiatives to obtain a holistic understanding of their experiences and facilitate their achievements in the organization. Based upon the review of the existing literature regarding Latinos and the outcomes of interviewing 24 participants (13 females and 11 males) in this research study, there are ample opportunities to conduct future empirical studies. The results of this study show the challenges first-generation Latino immigrants faced in the workplace and the importance for organizations with a diverse workforce to foster a more inclusive work environment for Latino immigrants. There is growing evidence that diversity and inclusion initiatives are critical for multicultural organizations. However, the results organizations have achieved and their efforts to create an inclusive workplace for Latino immigrants have been dissatisfactory thus far (Cox Jr., 2011). The methodology applied in this study was a qualitative approach to reflect the essence of the phenomenon studied. Results from this research found 14 family units and four major themes. These themes described how first-generation Latino immigrants understood and defined diversity and inclusion, their positive and negatives perceptions in the work environment, workplace challenges they faced, and their insights on organizational development. Additionally, this research discovered how interviewed participants were excluded by others and by themselves in the workplace. Lastly, this research study contributes to the literature and to the field by offering information that would eventually promote a better understanding of Latino immigrants and a more inclusive environment that encourages belongingness, uniqueness, and a constructive work experience for Latino immigrants. </p>

The main goal of this diploma thesis was to find and quantify the connection between coherence, entropy, polarimetric angle alpha obtained from Sentinel-1 radar data and grass cutting/pastures. The research was carried out in the area of the Krkonoše national park. To assemble and validate applied methodology, field data was collected 5 times. Hourly rainfall data from Czech hydrometeorological institute was available, but it did not have to be used - no rainfalls were recorded at the time of data acquisitions. Dependence between mowing and the value of coherence has been confirmed. After mowing, median coherence was higher than before mowing. The results were similar to VH as well as VV polarization. Coherence on polygons remained higher after 12-24 days. In total, two different data acquisition geometries (ascending and descending) were examined. The results in both cases were similar. For polarimetric parameters, no correlation between polarimetric parameters and grass mowing or pasture has been confirmed. Keywords: radar, SAR, Sentinel-1, coherence, polarimetry, grass mowing

This thesis is focused on IT Project Portfolio Management and the creation of tools for teaching it. The objectives are first to summarize the evolution of IT Project Portfolio Management, then to extend the current process of project selection with other elements and points of view, and also to create a software tool for teaching IT Project Portfolio Management. The thesis deals with the emergence and subsequent development of IT Project Portfolio Management and its benefits, problems, and concepts, which are necessary for deeper understanding of the issue. Furthermore, the thesis describes the cycle of IT Project Portfolio Management and highlights the important moments and trends. In addition, it focuses on the processes used in the context of portfolio management and its impact on the company and its employees. It also lists some options how to limit its and how to improve the quality of project plans. The focus of the thesis is also on the process of criteria selection and ways of obtaining appropriate weights of criteria and on other methods of selecting projects. The last chapter contains a manual how to work with the attached MS Excel file. The file provides a tool for the assessment of projects.

Strategic management training and development : an exploration into the extent and nature of senior and middle managers' development in the Palestinian telecommunication sectorSabella, Anton Robert January 2013 (has links)
This research explores the nature and extent of management development and training of senior and middle managers working in Palestinian telecommunication organizations using a basic trichotomous (three-stage) model: needs assessment, training development, and evaluation. A critical review of the literature is presented to identify the different approaches and key principles that make up the field of training and development. Using the survey approach, primary data were collected to answer the research question. A total of 142 questionnaires were distributed among senior and middle managers with 110 questionnaires being completed and returned (77 per cent response rate). Field work was also supported with 10 selected interviews with high ranking officials in the surveyed organizations to help corroborate the results. Thereafter, data was analysed using SPSS and spread sheets, and then compared with data available from literature. Despite the presence of a rather systematic approach to training, the findings show that the current status of training in the surveyed organizations is inadequate with heavy emphasis on traditional methods throughout the three stages; the current system does not offer a holistic perspective to training and development. This study presents an exploratory investigation into the training status in telecommunication organizations. It provides a fundamental foundation for future research aimed at expanding the available knowledge within the context of the study. In addition, specific strengths and weaknesses in the current system are identified using the trichotomous model in a more practical manner. Overall, this thesis offers both professionals and academics a fresh perspective on training in Palestinian telecommunication organizations; it not only highlights the importance of training but also stresses that future initiatives and programs are more carefully designed and implemented.

The dynamics of innovation contests using firm-hosted communitiesLangner, Benedikt Fabian January 2013 (has links)
Firms pursuing an open innovation strategy have increasingly turned to individuals as sources of new ideas. Two main approaches are often highlighted. First, firms can use online innovation contests, where individuals submit ideas in competition for a prize. Second, firms can use firm-hosted online communities, drawing from collaborative efforts of individuals with more intrinsic motivations to participate. A central challenge in both cases is that firms often struggle to sustain participation and effort of participants on an on-going basis. A third hybrid approach, where firms establish community-based innovation contests, has been largely ignored by research, but seems to help firms to engage participants on an on-going basis. This study focuses on community-based innovation contests to understand how firms engage communities to participate in contest over time. I conducted fieldwork at two firms that have successfully run them for many years, Chicago-based T-Shirt firm Threadless and Phoenix-based automotive firm Local Motors. Over ninety interviews with firm employees and community members, over six months of on-site observation at the two firms’ headquarters as well as internal documents and blog data have been collected and analysed. Based on this data the core of the thesis consists of three empirical chapters that examine how firms are able to engage the communities to participate in their contests on a regular basis. First, it shows that the addition of a community to contests increases contestants’ opportunities to learn. In experiential learning, contests provide experience whereas the community provides room for reflection and learning. These learning opportunities motivate contestants to come back and create contest entries on an on-going basis. Secondly, taking a social identity perspective, the research shows how the firms are able to engage the community members continuously by creating a joint firm-community identity. Lastly, it explains how these firms are able to influence community members’ perception of the tasks they are doing through the contest design. Firms are able to turn activities that have been traditionally regarded as work into a recreational activity.
