A review of the environmental resource mapping system and a proof that it is impossible to write a general algorithm for analysing interactions between organisms distributed at locations described by a locationally linked database and physical properties recorded within the database

Hall, Bryan, University of Western Sydney, Faculty of Science and Technology, School of Science January 1994 (has links)
The Environmental Resource Mapping System (E-RMS) is a geographic information system (GIS) that is used by the National Parks and Wildlife Service to assist in management of national parks. The package is available commercially from the Service and is used by other government departments for environmental management. E-RMS has also been present in Australian Universities and used for academic work for a number of years. This thesis demonstrates that existing procedures for product quality and performance have not been followed in the production of the package and that the package and therefore much of the work undertaken with the package is fundamentally flawed. The E-RMS software contains and produces a number of serious mistakes. Several problems are identified and discussed in this thesis. As a result of the shortcomings, the author recommends that an enquiry be conducted to investigate *1/ The technical feasibility of each project for which the E-RMS package has been used; *2/ The full extent and consequences of the failings inherent with the package; and *3/ The suitability of the E-RMS GIS package for the purposes for which it is sold. Australian Standard 3898 requires that the purpose, functions and limitations of consumer software shall be described. To comply with this standard, users of the E-RMS package would have to be informed of several factors related to it. These are discussed in the research. Failure to consider the usefulness and extractable nature of information in any GIS database will inevitably lead to problems that may endanger the phenomena that the GIS is designed to protect. / Master of Applied Science (Environmental Science)

MORPHOLOGICAL APPROACH FOR FOREST WOODY DEBRIS DETECTION USING MULTI-PLATFORM, MULTI-RESOLUTION LIDAR DATA

Sang Yeop Shin (15379697) 05 February 2024 (has links)

Woody debris (WD) is an important element in forest ecosystems. It provides critical habitat for plants, animals, and insects; but it is also a source of fuel contributing to fire propagation and sometimes leads to catastrophic wildfire. Usually, WD inventory is conducted through field surveys using transects and sample plots. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point clouds are emerging as a valuable source for the development of comprehensive WD detection strategies. Although results from previous LiDAR-based WD detection approaches have been promising, there is still a lack of a general strategy for handling acquired point clouds by different platforms with varying characteristics (e.g., point density) in a complex environment, especially in natural forests. Here, we propose a general morphological WD detection strategy which requires a few intuitive thresholds, making it applicable to multi-platform LiDAR datasets in both plantation and natural forests. The conceptual basis of the strategy is that WD LiDAR points exhibit non-planar characteristics, distinct intensity, and comprise clusters that exceed a minimum size. The developed strategy is tested using leaf-off point clouds acquired by Geiger-mode, uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV), and backpack LiDAR systems. The developed approach achieved an average recall of 0.83 indicating a low rate of omission errors. Datasets with higher point density (i.e., from UAV and backpack LiDAR) showed better performance. As for the precision evaluation metric, it ranges from 0.40 to 0.85, indicating a higher level of commission errors at the lower range. The commission errors depend on the presence of bushes and undergrowth, with a lower percentage in forest plantations.

Video-map: the interface of geovisualization in multimedia applied in transport engineering and enviromental engineering.

Simões, Carlos Enrique Hernández 26 November 2015 (has links)
This thesis proposes a methodology of geo-referenced mobile video-mapping from the development of prototypes that use a Geovisualization Multimedia Interface to synchronize the record (on video) of a place or event of interest to the route traveled by the inspection vehicle (on map or image), by collecting data from mobile sensors: digital camera, microphone, GNSS receiver and digital compass. The interface allows the integration of these sensors with existing digital maps available in web services. Systems such as this significantly improves the temporal analysis, management and decision making. The interface proposed and developed in this study is useful for many applications such as monitoring and inventory tool. This interface can be understood as the visual component of a mobile mapping system or mapping system as an alternative or complement, for applications in which the geometric precision of the GNSS navigation receiver is sufficient and its accessibility, a competitive factor. Applications developed in this study were twofold: a monitoring system and inventory road sign posts and a monitoring system of flood / drought and inventory of properties on the edge of hydroelectric reservoirs, both in full operation.

In recent years, the use of these systems has increased, as well as the challenge to ensure performance while the number of users and the data volume continue to grow. The performance evaluation is an important activity to investigate and mitigate systems performance issues. The workload is the starting point of the performance evaluation and is responsible for sending resquests to the system under evaluation. The reliability of the evaluation results is related to an appropriate load. Despite the importance of web map systems, the literature as presented little efforts to model the workload of these systems. In this dissertation, we present a methodology to collect and analyze data in order to create a model of Web GIS users’ behavior and to instantiate the model in a workload generator. We also propose a generic model, named MUSe-GM (Maps User Session Generative Model), and present a characterization of the users’ behavior using data of the access to a popular mapping application, collected by an extension developed for the Google Chrome browser. The characterization results were used to develop an instance of the behavior model and to implement a workload generator. The instance was evaluated by testing in a realWeb map system, using the workload generator, and through simulations. The results were compared with two other models from literature. The proposed model in this dissertation was significantly different in several aspects compared to the other, presenting a behavior closer to the real users’ behavior.
