It starts off from the presupposition that the author’s literary works presented an educational character at the time, instructing its readers about the standards of behavior and social values that should be accepted and retransmitted socially, for constituting being man for the 19th century. José de Alencar, as a novelist, historian and politician, was an observer and a constituent of the representations of the Empire. In all these activities, the political dimension – understood as the space of social articulation and its representation – was intensely present. The urban romances were, therefore, noted, presenting evidences of the articulation of the historical moment of the origin of the cultural and economic modernization of the country. Its role was attributed to the literature of educational element for the readers, grazing through the guideline of the ideal behavior or posture that Alencar defined as the best one to be adopted / A presente dissertação tem como objetivo analisar as representações de masculinidade através dos romances urbanos do escritor José de Alencar, durante o Segundo Reinado, assim como as relações de gênero que se estabeleceram na Corte. Parte-se do pressuposto de que as obras literárias do autor apresentavam um caráter pedagógico no período, instruindo seus leitores acerca dos padrões de conduta e valores sociais que deveriam ser aceitos e retransmitidos socialmente, para a constituição do ser homem para o século XIX. José de Alencar, como romancista, historiador e político, foi um observador e constituinte das representações do Império. Em todas estas atividades, a dimensão do político – entendida como o espaço de articulação do social e sua representação – esteve fortemente presente. Os romances urbanos foram, portanto, percebidos, apresentando as evidências da articulação do momento histórico dos primórdios da modernização cultural e econômica do país. Seu papel era atribuído à literatura de elemento pedagógico para os leitores, perpassando pelo direcionamento da conduta ou postura ideal que Alencar definia como a melhor a ser adotada
