Is EPZ employment a stepping stone or a stumbling block for the empoerment of women? Evidence from MauritiusPeedoly, Aveeraj Sharma 06 1900 (has links)
This study critically assesses how far the Mauritian EPZ, which consists of a
predominantly female workforce, is conducive to women’s empowerment, particularly in
a context of rife global competition. Focus Group Discussions with actual female
workers and semi-directive interviews of those who have been laid off reveal that there
have effectively been some benefits which may be construed as empowerment.
However, low wages and harsh treatment of workers at the workplace, compounded with
rising costs of living and pervasive patriarchal values impede the extent of empowerment.
Yet, when contrasted with the experiences of laid off women, the centrality of
employment becomes more palpable. The experiences of job loss are in many cases
destructive of not only the laid-off worker’s self-image and aspirations, but also on their
ability to juggle with poverty and its associated outcomes. Despite being a relatively
difficult sector to work in, its benefits outweigh its limitations. / Sociology / MA (Social Science)

Motivation and motivational strategies are believed to enhance student participation in the learning of a second language. As an educator, I wanted to conduct my own research to investigate whether a teacher can motivate slow learners by using different motivational strategies.
Fifteen pupils of Form I participated in completing a questionnaire to show how much they were intrinsically and extrinsically motivated in the learning of the Arabic language before applying the motivation strategies. At the end, the same questionnaire was given after these strategies were applied.
As a result, my goal was achieved. Pupils seemed to be motivated after applying the motivational strategies. However, based on the findings, extrinsic motivation showed no sign of improvement and obviously, this matter merits further research. Some recommendations are provided.
At last, it is hoped that results of this study could be used to adapt the curriculum to the needs of slow learners. / Classics and World Languages / M.A. (Arabic Language)

This dissertation analyses public health service delivery at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital (S.S.R.N.H.) in Mauritius. Particular emphasis is laid on the historical development of public health service delivery at S.S.R.N.H. Public health service delivery has been approached from the view points of its nature and scope. The core components of the research survey have been on some major obstacles and flaws in effective public health service delivery at S.S.R.N.H. The measuring instrument used for the research survey was a self administered questionnaire. The main findings were discussed especially absenteeism, personnel turnover, stress, burnout, morale, sexual harassment, lethargy and disobedience, nepotism, shirking responsibility, alcohol and drug abuse, active political interference, bribery and corruption, dishonesty and retaliation and neglect of duty.
Attention was also devoted on the current national health policy for improving public health service delivery at S.S.R.N.H., inter-alia, the National Policy for Public Heath Act 17 of 2000 and the White Paper on Health Sector
Development and Reform of December 2003.
The public health environment is constantly altering. Therefore, it is essential to adjust to the changing health environment. This dissertation has addressed the future challenges in the micro health environment and macro health environment of S.S.R.N.H. Ultimately, a holistic instead of a parochial approach to addressing shortcomings identified in public health service delivery at S.S.R.N.H. has been advocated in this dissertation. / Public Administration / M.Admin. Der "Hundertjährige Kalender" basiert auf Wetteraufzeichnungen von Mauritius Knauer (1613-1664 ), der als Abt im oberfränkischen Zisterzienserkloster Langheim wirkte. Die zwischen März 1652 und März 1659 fast täglich notierten Beobachtungen ermöglichen eine statistische Auswertung und die - teilweise sogar quantitative - Gegenüberstellung damaliger und heutiger Wetterverhältnisse. Vergleiche mit Niederschriften weiterer zeitgenössischer Autoren belegen den wissenschaftlichen Wert der Knauerschen Aufzeichnungen. Der Beobachtungszeitraum fällt in die "kleine Eiszeit" und zeichnet sich durch eine Reihe sehr strenger Winter aus. / The "Hundred Year's Calendar" is based on weather recordings of Mauritius Knauer (1613-1664 ), which worked as an abbot in the upper-Frankish Cistercian monastery Langheim. Between March 1652 and March 1659 almost daily noted observations enable a statistical analysis
and - partly even quantitative - the confrontation weather conditions at that time and of today's. Comparisons with notes of further contemporary authors show the scientific value of the Knauer recordings. The observation period falls into the "little ice age" and is characterised by a series very severe winter.
