An evaluation of cost in government aircraft acquisition programs

Reynolds, Robert Paul 03 October 2011 (has links)
Aircraft system development has been steadily increasing in cost since the inception of human flight. Several factors have influenced this including economics, increasing complexity and increased customer expectations and requirements. In addition, the contractors which produce these systems have almost consistently been unable to complete them within the originally contracted budget and schedule. The factors which influence cost increase have been studied extensively by industry, government and private organizations and a study of those findings will be conducted in the following work with the intention of determining the factors which are primarily responsible for cost increase in aircraft acquisition programs. Following the discussion of data, recommendations for reducing cost will made with the goal of identifying the methods with which systems engineering can be used to improve the process at the system and program level. The intent will be to show how improved techniques for managing programs, meeting customer requirements and improving cost estimates can be implemented to manage cost growth. The ultimate goal of this study is to show that program risk can and should be managed more effectively and that high technology programs can be executed if they are properly managed. / text

Lightless Mornings: A Fine Legacy

Zeanah, Emily 20 May 2011 (has links)
Lightless Mornings: A Fine Legacy represents a personal interrogation and historical account of my great-great -great grandfather, W.D. McCurdy’s use of forced labor in his coalmines and cotton plantations in the Black Belt region of Alabama during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through personal research including interviews with other descendents of McCurdy, as well as scholarly research about the practice of convict leasing in Alabama, I explore dynamics of inheritance, economics, power, privilege, race, class, geography, history, family, and identity.

NASA på Nya äventyr i rymden : Populariseringen av den amerikanska visionen om rymden

Nord, Johan January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to bring forward and discuss the American vision for space exploration found at NASA's homepage, how the vision is popularised and why. NASA's homepage is analyzed as popularized science and the theoretical perspective emanates from the field of popular science and especially the work of Johan Kärnfelt. The historical reference is made up by Howard E McCurdy and he's thoughts about space and the American imagination. The analysis is based on a number of documents that popularize the vision for space exploration and is intended for the public. These documents describe the future plan for NASA and US space exploration.
