Carbon dioxide sensitive photosynthetic rate sensor

A glass electrode is described which is capable of detecting photosynthetic CO₂ uptake by monitoring the concentration of CO₂ dissolved in a small drop of algal suspension. Consideration of current theory suggests that transients should occur in the rate of CO₂ uptake which are similar to but distinct from those observed in O₂ evolution rate. These transients should be most readily observed when cells are illuminated alternately with wavelengths of 650 nm and 705 mn. The preliminary results show that C0₂ uptake by photosynthesis can be monitored by this apparatus. Although transients were not observed, this may be due to the rather low sensitivity. There is a discussion of shortcomings of the apparatus, and of improvements necessary before transients can be observed. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

Dosing Accuracy When Administering Oral Medications

Inaccurate dosing of children’s liquid medication is a major problem that causes adverse effects for children every year. In order to prevent these errors, education for at risk parents is essential. A survey and observational study was done in order to identify parents/caregivers who make dosing errors when measuring out liquid medication for their children. A total of 25 parents/caregivers with children admitted to Arnold Palmer Hospital were included in this study. Study participants completed a survey that included demographic data as well as parenting experience. The parents were directly observed measuring a dose of corn syrup using Children’s liquid Tylenol® dosing instructions. The research participants were offered a variety of common measuring devices and they chose the one they most often used at home. Data indicated a high incidence of dosing errors made by a variety of participants. Of the 25 research participants, 13 (52%) made an error greater than 20% when measuring out the dose based on the provided instructions and their child’s weight. This data suggests nurses need to include dosing education for all parents at discharge. This study has shown that many parents are at risk for making errors when measuring medication. Effective discharge education on the importance of measuring medication accurately can prevent these errors and the adverse effects they cause.

Today, this is achieved by teaching </p><p>the patient the optimal load by iteration. This has been shown insufficient for many patients, due </p><p>to their difficulties of remembering the correct amount of load. Furthermore, patients who lack </p><p>proprioception are unable to feel the load. </p><p> </p><p>A portable measuring system would enhance the patient possibility of optimal loadings. This </p><p>thesis has two main objects. 1. A study of the state of the art on existing commercial system, </p><p>related patents and measuring techniques. 2. A new measuring technique, which is the part that </p><p>most of all determine the system performance, was developed. A new design, using off the shelf, </p><p>products is proposed. </p><p> </p><p>The design uses a finite number of thin sensors placed onto an insole. By placing the sensors at </p><p>the plantar pressure points most of the total load is captured by the insole setups. To compensate </p><p>for the measuring error fitting methods were evaluated. The result depends on the insole </p><p>calibration methods. The best result without individual calibration is: mean error for the group of </p><p>0.5% of the total patient load and a deviation of 24%. With individual calibration reduces the </p><p>deviation to about 12%.</p>

The project contains a force analysis of the vertical axis wind turbine Lucia's supporting arms and a measuring device to experimentally measure the forces is made. The forces between the supporting arms and the tower are calculated theoretically and then simulated by a computere. A measuring devise is then designed to measure the forces experimentally. The forces acting on the attachment between the supporting arms and the tower is primarily the centripetal force, gravitational force and the aerodynamic forces on the rotor wings. The maximum forces were theoretically calculated and is 13.38 kN along the x-axis, -0.25 kN along the y-axis and then 0.5 kN along the z-axis. The axis are acording to a rotational reference system where the x-axis runs along the supporting arm and the y-axis runs along the axis of rotation. The maximum torque that occurs is 0.53 kNm along the y-axis and 1.29 kNm along the z-axis. The size of the forces have been confirmed with a deviation of up to 1.8 % in the simulation using SolidWorks 2010. For the experimental measurements a measuring device has been developed which consists of S-load cells with wave indicator and transmitter, an attachment for the measuring equipment and distanceplates to stabilize the rotor. S-load cells, wave indicator and transmitter were ordered and drawings for the attachment of the measuring equipment and spacer plates was done. The eigenfrequencies and the stress have been investigated for the parts. The eigenfrequencies for the wind turbine was estimated to decline up to 13 % when the measuring device was mounted and the lowest Factor of Safety was 1.67. Before the attachment of the measuring device and the spacer plates can be ordered the attachment of the supporting arms, how the loadcells should be attached to the device and the safety margins need to be examined.

Using Multiple Household Food Inventories to Measure Food Availability in the Home

The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of conducting multiple household food inventories over the course of 30 days to examine weekly food variability. Household food availability influences the foods individuals choose to consume; therefore, by assessing the home food environment a better understanding of what people are eating can be obtained. Methods of measuring home food availability have been developed and tested in recent years; however most of these methods assess food availability on one occasion only. This study aimed to capture "usual" availability by using multiple assessments. After the development and pre-testing of the 171-item home observation guide to determine the presence and amount of food items in the home (refrigerator, freezer, pantry, elsewhere), two trained researchers recruited a convenience sample of 9 households (44.4% minority), administered a baseline questionnaire (personal info, shopping habits, food resources, and food security), and conducted 5 in-home assessments (5-7 day interval) over a 30-day period. Each in-home assessment included shopping and fast food activities since the last assessment and an observational survey of types and amounts of foods present. The final in-home assessment included an audio recorded interview on food habits and beliefs. Complete data were collected from all 9 women (32.8 y +/- 6.0; 3 married; 4 +/- 1.6 adults/children in household; 4 SNAP; 6 food insecure) and their households. Weekly grocery purchases (place, amount, and purpose) use (frequency) varied from once (n=1) to every week (n=5); 4 used fast food 2-3 times/wk for 4 weeks. Quantity and types of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables varied by week and by family. The feasibility of conducting multiple in-home assessments was confirmed with 100% retention from all participants. This methodology is important in that it provided detailed information on intra-monthly variation in food availability. The findings suggest the inadequacy of a single measure to assess food availability in the home.
