Emotionally Meaningful Homecare : Designing for good relationships between patients and devicesEdström, Hampus January 2012 (has links)
Industrial design is an expanding field. Through new research, discussion and explorations the definitions of what designers can and should do is constantly discussed and redefined. The starting point for my master thesis is the investigation of the concept of emotional durability. In other words, I have looked into how designers could create more meaningful relationships between users and products. It concerns product style norms, terminologies for describing relationship types, as well as a product’s meaning to a user. In order to put learning outcomes into practice, this master thesis also involves a design project where I created a proposal for a new rehabilitation product. There is great potential in investigating how meaningful medical devices for the home should be designed. During my design process I try to dig into what it means to design medical products for a home environment. At the same time, I explore how to create emotionally durable experiences for the patients and increase the motivation in their rehabilitation. My proposal is a balance exercising device that introduces a new level of user interaction, which connects back to my research on emotional durability.

Drivers and Hindrances to Med-Tech Innovation : A device's guide to the Swedish healthcare galaxyWagrell, Sofia January 2017 (has links)
Today, the expectations on new medical technology solutions are substantial. On the one hand, healthcare policy expects new technologies both to improve the quality of people’s life and to reduce the burgeoning healthcare costs. On the other hand, innovation policy expects new med-tech solutions to stimulate economic growth, with large emphasis on the production of new solutions. However, despite the growing importance of med-tech innovations it is cumbersome to embed these innovative promising products into use in the Swedish healthcare sector. This thesis investigates med-tech innovation by following a microwave-based device in the treatment of the common disease BPH, Benign Prostatic Enlargement. This is an empirically based longitudinal study where the microwave device is used as a probe to capture a med-tech innovation journey. We follow the device through the efforts of technological and scientific development, through complex industrial production structures and foremost inits struggles to achieve widespread use in Swedish public healthcare. This study identifies a number of hindrances and drivers and, importantly, how they are interconnected in the innovation process. By applying the different settings of development, production and use of this device, a central finding is that the very same mechanisms can have contradicting effects in the different settings. Moreover, what functions as a trigger to innovation during development, can become later a hindrance to use. The study also shows that, whereas drivers prevail over hindrances in the development and production of med-tech solutions, hindrances clearly prevail in their use, which involves the provision of healthcare services. Not only has the use setting a generally weak financial support, but its organisational structures and regulations do also have a negative impact on the spread of new solutions in healthcare.

Industry 4.0 Analysis of the implementation of Industry 4.0 in a medical technology enterprise with a comparison with automotive enterprises and options for improvementWei, Bo, Alius, Kevin January 2021 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the implementation of Industry 4.0 in medical technical industry (med tech). The aim of the thesis is to get a sufficient evaluation on the Industry 4.0 implementation in a German medical technology enterprise, and also to find suggestions for improving the implementation. Two main research questions are studied in this thesis: “What is the maturity level of Industry 4.0 in a German med tech enterprise with comparison to automotive enterprises?” and “How to overcome barriers and improve the Industry 4.0 level in the med tech enterprise?” The thesis uses qualitative analysis with case study as the main research method. Automotive industry is used as reference and supporting the comparative case study. A historical review and a survey with open and closed questions are used for the data collection and analysis. Compared with automotive enterprises, the med tech enterprise is limited in the aspect of smart factory/production with Industry 4.0 implementation by various special regulations, but nevertheless there is much space and potential to develop Industry 4.0 in other aspects like smart business, smart product, and smart customers, as well as some new business modes.
