Press and politics in Trinidad and Tobago : a study of five electoral campaigns over ten years, 2000-2010

Bachan-Persad, I. January 2012 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the role of the press in five political campaigns in Trinidad and Tobago, over a ten year period, from 2000 to 2010. Using framing theory, it seeks to determine if the level of structural and partisan bias in the three daily newspapers in the country was a major factor in the outcome of general elections. This thesis further examines how press coverage of national elections contributed significantly towards development of a healthy democracy in Trinidad and Tobago and this research on media and politics, especially over a defined period of electoral volatility in the country, is the first of its kind in the Caribbean and will complement existing literature written on this subject worldwide. It is also the only comprehensive study on media bias in electoral coverage of political campaigns in Trinidad and Tobago in a context in which there have been public allegations of media bias by political leaders in the country. The two - pronged methodological approach of content analysis, and interviews with media practitioners allow for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of case studies of electoral campaigns using innovative research tools such as a bias scale and coding template, to minimize the margin of error in the analysis. In this thesis the issue of whether the press did have an influential effect on election outcome is also explored. Based on analysis and findings, this thesis proposes a new model of media and politics for countries like Trinidad and Tobago transitioning from a system of authoritarianism to liberalism called an “emerging liberal democratic model”. The evolution of this model is a work in progress which may have implications for other similar societies.

Political Communication in a Multicultural New Zealand: Ethnic Minority Media and the 2008 Election

Chambers, Kirsten Elizabeth January 2009 (has links)
New Zealand’s 2008 general election, with its unprecedented focus on the “ethnic vote” and ethnic minority candidates with highest-ever party list rankings, proved compelling from a migrant engagement perspective. How do migrant communities achieve voice in their adopted country? And how does a now unmistakably multicultural nation address the political communication needs of an increasingly vocal, pro-active, and politically involved migrant population? This thesis examines the role of ethnic minority media in engaging migrant communities in the democratic process. In particular, it examines South Asian media in New Zealand and the extent to which they represented a vital public sphere for informing and engaging their wider migrant communities in public political debate during the 2008 election campaign. Applying qualitative and quantitative research approaches, this thesis elicits and analyses diverse perspectives of the extent to which local South Asian newspapers and radio current affairs programming represented an important complementary public sphere for informing and engaging migrant voters during the campaign. Ultimately, this study provides an alternative perspective on media coverage of the 2008 New Zealand general election, and insight into the role and influence of ethnic minority media within democratic discourse. As a contribution to the body of academic literature examining the media and minority political engagement, it is intended to provoke critical consideration of the communications needs facing new migrants in an increasingly multicultural New Zealand.

No. of bitstreams: 1 253.pdf: 730945 bytes, checksum: 06de873e805a93c156c9d4c02a088b7a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-03-02 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / Under a sartorian perspective, we characterized the Brazilian Workers Party (PT) as an anti-system party until the middle of the 90´s, because in some of their actions the party s objective was to cause symbolic impacts that could unlegitimize the Brazilian political system. Using the Panebianco s theoretical model, we try to explain how PT processed the institutional changes that made the party leaves gradually its anti-systemic character, making it possible its approach in relation to the centrist political forces that became clear in the presidential electoral campaign in 2002. Such migration toward the center nominated by political variable, and the quest for more competitiveness in a competitiveness variable were essential for the 2002 electoral campaign s modernization when Lula conquered the Presidency. This modernization was verified by an comparative cases study which compared this with the 1989 electoral campaign, very close to the non-modernized polo, according to un archetype constructed by Mancini and Swanson; the electoral campaigns analyzed represented reflections of the party s mutation.
