Army Medics With College Degrees Who Transitioned to Civilian LifeGiberson, Alex 01 January 2015 (has links)
Few colleges and universities have adopted the practice to provide credits for the majority of undergraduate coursework for military career training. Easing the transition from military to civilian life has become a priority for the Department of Defense, yet there is a significant gap in empirical knowledge regarding the potential benefits of a college degree on soldiers exiting the military. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of Army Medics who have transitioned back into civilian life after graduating from a college degree program that grants significant credit for military training. This phenomenological study used a conceptual framework derived from Schlossberg's adult transition theory. Data were collected from a focus group, semi-structured interviews, and interviewer notes. Seven participants were identified through purposive sampling. Interview transcripts and interviewer notes were analyzed using the Van Kaam method and yielded 4 pre-transition and 6 transitional themes. Findings indicated that the participants' initial fears of the transition were replaced with higher perceptions of self-worth and confidence, which benefitted them as they assimilated back into civilian society. The implications for positive social change include informing the Department of Defense and policymakers who are supporting soldiers transitioning to civilian life about study participants' increased feelings of self-worth and confidence upon degree completion.

A Humanist Approach to Understanding the Migration of Filipino Nurses to the United StatesYumol, Benjamin B. 16 January 2010 (has links)
The global nursing shortage created opportunities for registered nurses from less
developed countries to improve their working and living conditions through migration to
more progressive and affluent nations. In the Philippines, this phenomenon left the
country devoid of the much needed health care professionals.
In this research study, I described the lived experiences of eleven indigenous
Filipino nurses who migrated to the United States. Through the phenomenology
approach, I was able to probe into the meaning of the migration as the participants lived
through it, approaching it from a humanist perspective and using Abraham Maslow's
theory on the hierarchy of needs as the framework. The study was intended to illustrate
how the economic, social, and political characteristics of both countries impacted the
Filipino nurses' behavior and thought processes while in pursuit of personal goals.
Ultimately, this study could be used as a guide in the development of employment and
health care policies that are more responsive to the current state of the nursing
profession.

Skirtingose pirminės sveikatos priežiūros įstaigose dirbančių medikų su sveikata susijusio elgesio bei pervargimo palyginimas / Comparison within the primary health care institutions working in the medical health-related behavior and exhaustionŽilienė, Edita 15 January 2009 (has links)
Tyrimo metodai. Profesinio pervargimo sindromui įvertinti buvo naudotas profesinio pervargimo klausimynas medicinos darbuotojams. Sveikatai palankaus elgesio įvertinimui naudotas fizinio aktyvumo, sveikos mitybos, mitybos režimo klausimynai, pateikti sveikatai palankaus elgesio klausimai. Kadangi sveikatai didelę reikšmę turi stresas, kurio medikų darbe yra pakankamai daug, buvo naudojama psichologinės įtampos skalė (Reeder) ir stresogeninių įvykių klausimynas.
Tyrime dalyvavo 131 medicinos darbuotojas. 44 dirbantys greitosios medicinos pagalbos stotyje, 71- poliklinikoje, 36- slaugos ligoninėje. Viso apklaustos 109 moterys ir 22 vyrai. Šiose skirtingose sveikatos priežiūros įstaigose medikų atliekamas darbas skiriasi pagal darbo specifiką pagal patiriamą psichologinę įtampą, todėl atliktu tyrimu buvo norėjome išsiaiškinti ar tai turi reikšmės medikų su sveikata susijusiam elgesiui ir pervargimo sindromui atsirasti.
Rezultatai. To evaluate favorable health behavior were used questionaries of physical activity, good nutrition, diet, and questions about favorable behavior for health. Because of big importance of stress, which is quite usual in medics work, the psychological tension scale (Reader) and stressors factors questionnaire were used.
The study included 131 medical worker. 44 of them working in emergency medical service, 77 - in clinic, 36 - in nursing-home. Altogether 109 women and 22 men were surveyed. In this different types of hospitals the medical work differs in its specifics and in psychological tension. Due to this difference, we were trying to find out whether it is relevant to the behavior related to health and overwork syndrome of medics.
Results. The analysis of the results showed that the emergency medical service medics subjective assessment of health is worse than the clinic-employed. Clinic medics in a subjective assessment of health is better in than in the nursing-home working medics. Also as medics working in nursing-home is sleeping worse than in clinic and in emergency medical station. In analyzing the health of favorable behavior received that ambulance medics working at the station smoke and consume alcohol more than clinic and nursing-home medical workers. The most physically active medics are working in clinic... [to full text]

Studio molecolare della produzione di antocianine in pianta / MOLECULAR BIOLOGY OF ANTHOCYANIN IN PRODUCTION IN PLANTSCARLETTI, GIORGIA 22 April 2010 (has links)
Anthocyanins are secondary metabolites in plants. They belong to a class of flavonoids synthesized via the phenylpropanoid pathway and they are antioxidant molecules important for plant, animal and human health. Flavonoids are widely studied in legume because they are implicated in several biological and physiological functions. In this thesis seven genotypes (two wild-types and five indipendent mutants) of Medicago truncatula (the model legume plant) affected in flavonoid metabolism have been characterized at phenotypic, physiological and molecular level. The main difference between wild-types and mutants, is the reduction in anthocyanin content in leaves. The anthocyanin accumulation during the leaf life, the flowering time and the fruit formation have been registered and compared. The two wild-types contain 6 μg cyanidin.mg-1 of fresh weight, while in the mutants the anthocyanin amount ranged from 0.12 μg cyanidin mg-1 to 2 μg cyanidin mg-1 of fresh weight. After HPLC-DAD-MS/MS analysis, the main anthocyanin present in the two wild-types is the cyanidin-3-O feruloyl. The Expression profile of genes codifying enzymes and transcriptional factor involved in flavonoid biosynthesis has been investigated. RT-PCR and qPCR results show different possible pathways of reduction of anthocyanins in the five mutants. These mutants, have been exposed to UV-B radiations and their response has been investigated measuring the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm, qP and NPQ) in untreated plants, during treatment (after 4hrs and 14hrs of treatment) and in the recovering phase. All genotypes, regardless of the anthocyanins amount, showed a decrease of the photosyntetic efficiency after 14hrs of treatment. This indicates a marginal role of these pigments in the oxidative damages protection. Mutants do not response in the same manner to the UV—B exposure and the anthocyanin amount does not increase equally in all genotypes. The anthocyanin metabolism is studied also at the gene regulation level. A novel Myb gene (MtMYBA) involved in anthocyanin pathway has been isolated and characterized. This gene is more expressed in tissues which accumulate anthocyanins in M. truncatula plants. The functional analysis has been investigated overexpressing this Myb gene under the control of 35S promoter. This construct has been used to transform Arabisopsis thaliana and Medicago truncatula plants. In addition, the MtMYBA promoter has been cloned in a plasmids containing GUS and GFP reporter genes.

Rätt beväpning för uppgiften : en jämförelse av vapensystem för en sjukvårdsgrupp / Right armament for the task : a comparison of weapons for medicsHansson, Mattias January 2013 (has links)
The ability to provide a good medical treatment to injured service personnel in the Swedish Armed Forces is important, but the Armed Forces' ability or inability to provide soldiers qualified care is also vital for the members of the armed forces confidence for their own ability. Swedish medics are expected to take care of a patient, whatever the terrain and threat may be. Swedish medics aren’t considered to be combatants in war or conflict but the law gives them the right to defend themselves and their patients. They are currently equipped with the Ak 5 to protect themselves and their patients, a weapon that is used by all service personel In the Swedish Armed Forces, this means that the medics carry a full length rifle. This report will examine the weapon best suited for a medical team to carry out its duties while also providing a level of personal protection should the need arise.
