Melanie Klein: a psychobiographical study

Espinosa, Marianna J January 2008 (has links)
The objective of psychobiography is a better understanding of individuals, and psychobiographical case studies add meaning and value to research (Runyan, 1988a). Melanie Klein was chosen for this study through a purposive sampling method due to her contributions to the discipline of psychology, which placed her in a distinguished position regarding twentieth century psychoanalysis. Furthermore, no other psychobiography has been written on Klein. The primary aim of this study was to present the reader with a basic description of her life, and a secondary aim was to accomplish an in-depth description of Klein within her social and historical context. Due to these aims and the nature of psychobiography, it may be said that this is a qualitative study based on a single case method, described as explorative and descriptive. Data was analysed according to Huberman and Miles’ (1994) approach which consists of data reduction, display and verification. This study was guided by Levinson’s (1996) theory of Adult Development in Women. The theory allowed for an in-depth description of Klein’s experiences and social and historical contexts by merely illuminating her life. Finally, it may be said that this study contributed to the limited amount of psychobiographical research in South Africa.

O modelo psicanalítico kleiniano aplicado à prevenção em saúde mental na infância / The kleinian psychoanalytic model applied in infant mental health prevention

Rahim, Mohamad Ali Abdul 06 June 2006 (has links)
The present work aimed at the theoretical analysis of the kleinian psychoanalytic model to formulate a conception of infant mental health prevention. Attempted also to evaluate the existence of kleinian conceptions directed towards primary prevention, as well as elements that corroborate the primary prevention intervention, in its universal, selected and indicated applications. Concepts of mental health were formulated, based on the kleinian psychoanalytic model, and the influences of the transforming process of the superego as precondition to the mental health consolidation in childhood were analyzed. Its viability was accomplished by theoretical research of books, scientific articles, and other sources related to Melanie Klein’s work. The analysis of the theoretical material contemplated the main conceptual categories of the kleinian theory and emphasized vertices the pointed out the meeting with notions of prevention and mental health. It was concluded that the kleinian model holds the idea of primary prevention and reunites elements to support universal, selective and indicated preventive intervention. Mental health is defined as a fluid state, influenced by quantitative and qualitative factors, and characterized by resilience and social-emotional competence. The transformation of the archaic superego in moral conscious is considered essential to the reaching of mental health, hand in hand with the integration of the ego. Finalizing, based on the theoretical analysis of the kleinian model, and the study of the interaction between risk factors and protective factors, a proposal inspired on Cartesian geometry applied in primary prevention intervention was elaborated. The theoretical and ethical implications of the approximation between the psychoanalytic theory and the preventive approach were examined.

Psicanálise, cinema e fantasia: a análise de filmes pela perspectiva de Melanie Klein e autores pós-kleinianos / Psychoanalysis, cinema e phantasy: the analysis of film from the perspective of Melanie Klein and post-Kleinian authors

Machado Junior, Péricles Pinheiro 29 May 2014 (has links)
Based on a documentary research of papers published by psychoanalysts and academics associated with the Kleinian thought, this study aims at describing the ways in which theories of Melanie Klein and post-Kleinian authors have been used in the analysis of films, revealing the main characteristics and methodological contingencies that result from such an approach. The work begins with a contextualization of the intersections between the fields of psychoanalysis and cinema, emphasizing the propositions of Christian Metz on the psychoanalytic study of film. The central argument of this research is developed from Melanie Kleins unfinished analysis of Orson Welles Citizen Kane, followed by Laura Mulveys comments on Kleins essay. The notion of unconscious phantasy a central element of Kleinian thought is discussed in light of the theories of Hanna Segal on the aesthetic experience afforded by the arts, followed by the accounts of Graham Clarke and Michael OPray on the experience of the analyst as a spectator in the movie theatre. A critical review of the works published by psychoanalysts and scholars who analyse seven films under a particularly Kleinian perspective was performed. Based on the results of the review, it was possible to discern elements of Kleinian approach deployed by these authors in their analysis of the filmic thematic complex, especially the notion of inner world, the potency of unconscious fantasies and the aesthetic experience of the analyst as a spectator, who offers her/his subjectivity to voice the emotional effects elicited by the film

Córdova Valladares, Andrea 01 1900 (has links)

Mourning in America: Racial Trauma and the Democratic Work of Mourning

McIvor, David January 2010 (has links)

This dissertation argues for a version of democratic theory, and institutions of democratic practice, that would call for and help to nurture a form of civic identity--individual and collective--committed to a "work of mourning" over the historical and enduring traumas surrounding racial discrimination and violence in the United States. By a reading of psychoanalytic theory in conversation with political and social theory, I show that mourning should be considered less as a limited response to particular loss--one that will resolve itself after a certain lapse of time--than as a process of identity formation through recognition of, and reflection on, formative traumas in the democratic polity. Using the work of Melanie Klein in particular, I argue that the work of mourning not only implies the working through of mundane losses and traumas, but the development of a certain identity (in what Klein calls the "depressive position") that is sensitive to the larger scenes of persecution and violence that shape the social and political landscape. For Klein, mourning is ultimately the process of establishing internal objects that enrich the self's capacity to mitigate its hatred, fear, envy, and greed with reparative guilt and love. Klein's descriptions of inter-subjective mourning have relevance outside the comparatively narrow confines of the analytic situation. I argue that Klein's theories of mourning and identity can enhance collective efforts to address the traumas surrounding racial violence and discrimination in the United States. I illustrate this connection by examining the experience of the Greensboro Truth and Reconciliation Commission (GTRC), which operated in Greensboro, North Carolina from 2004 to 2006.
/ Dissertation
