Melanie Klein: a psychobiographical study

Espinosa, Marianna J January 2008 (has links)
The objective of psychobiography is a better understanding of individuals, and psychobiographical case studies add meaning and value to research (Runyan, 1988a). Melanie Klein was chosen for this study through a purposive sampling method due to her contributions to the discipline of psychology, which placed her in a distinguished position regarding twentieth century psychoanalysis. Furthermore, no other psychobiography has been written on Klein. The primary aim of this study was to present the reader with a basic description of her life, and a secondary aim was to accomplish an in-depth description of Klein within her social and historical context. Due to these aims and the nature of psychobiography, it may be said that this is a qualitative study based on a single case method, described as explorative and descriptive. Data was analysed according to Huberman and Miles’ (1994) approach which consists of data reduction, display and verification. This study was guided by Levinson’s (1996) theory of Adult Development in Women. The theory allowed for an in-depth description of Klein’s experiences and social and historical contexts by merely illuminating her life. Finally, it may be said that this study contributed to the limited amount of psychobiographical research in South Africa.

O modelo psicanalítico kleiniano aplicado à prevenção em saúde mental na infância / The kleinian psychoanalytic model applied in infant mental health prevention

Rahim, Mohamad Ali Abdul 06 June 2006 (has links)
The present work aimed at the theoretical analysis of the kleinian psychoanalytic model to formulate a conception of infant mental health prevention. Attempted also to evaluate the existence of kleinian conceptions directed towards primary prevention, as well as elements that corroborate the primary prevention intervention, in its universal, selected and indicated applications. Concepts of mental health were formulated, based on the kleinian psychoanalytic model, and the influences of the transforming process of the superego as precondition to the mental health consolidation in childhood were analyzed. Its viability was accomplished by theoretical research of books, scientific articles, and other sources related to Melanie Klein’s work. The analysis of the theoretical material contemplated the main conceptual categories of the kleinian theory and emphasized vertices the pointed out the meeting with notions of prevention and mental health. It was concluded that the kleinian model holds the idea of primary prevention and reunites elements to support universal, selective and indicated preventive intervention. Mental health is defined as a fluid state, influenced by quantitative and qualitative factors, and characterized by resilience and social-emotional competence. The transformation of the archaic superego in moral conscious is considered essential to the reaching of mental health, hand in hand with the integration of the ego. Finalizing, based on the theoretical analysis of the kleinian model, and the study of the interaction between risk factors and protective factors, a proposal inspired on Cartesian geometry applied in primary prevention intervention was elaborated. The theoretical and ethical implications of the approximation between the psychoanalytic theory and the preventive approach were examined.

The role of psychodynamics in linguistics : applying the tradition of Melanie Klein to the analysis of conversational interaction

Hoyle, Robert January 1989 (has links)
Linguistics has developed elaborate accounts of the social aspects of language use - 'how to do things with words' - but the emotional-dynamic aspects have hitherto received less attention. Such discussions of emotive or affective meaning as there have been have tended to concentrate on the linguistic resources that are coded into the language system, rather than the dynamics of emotional interaction enacted through language use. The clinical discipline of Kleinian psychoanalysis, by contrast, has made emotional dynamics its central concern. Furthermore the main tool of the psychoanalyst's trade is the verbal interpretation of the patient's material, much of which is itself verbal. These factors have led to the development in Kleinian psychodynamic theory of a particularly rich vocabulary for understanding emotional-dynamic interaction, and specifically those aspects which are verbally enacted. The goal of this thesis is to outline a linguistic theory of emotional dynamics based on insights derived from Kleinian psychoanalysis. It aims to extrapolate from a clinical context Kleinian ideas that can be integrated with those of the school of Linguistic thought that has emphasised the dynamic aspects of locally-managed discourse meaning.

This work intends to understand the theme of femininity changes in the work of Melanie Klein and then trace a historical and epistemological route on the significance of this issue to the thought of this author. Specifically, we also aim to discuss and question how the notion of femininity can offer an innovative way in order to read and understand the Kleinian text. Despite that, we believe that this issue will allow other subjective tracks to come up in contemporary times, what repercussions later in the way of understanding psychoanalysis displaced the phallic trait. In other words, since the beginning of this research we were based on the idea that there would be, as is advocated by some contemporary authors of psychoanalysis and that had been reflected by Freud at the end of his work, the ability to understand modes of subjectivity out of phallic trait i.e. prior to the traditional structure of the Oedipus complex and heritage of our Western culture. Femininity, so it would be this subjectivity so in a very primitive psychic time of the child with his mother, which would allow different subjective joints
